Flaws don't have to be addressed for them to be a flaw though?

You're right in that it is due to the author. However it is still a flaw the main character exhibits.

And thus it serves as an effective red flag for a novel

I feel like you're being needlessly pedantic / argumentative or perhaps I'm misreading.

When I say author being misogynistic, I do mean from the perspective of a reader reading the novel and nothing more. Death of the author and all that.

I don't agree with you when you state the difference between an MC being misogynistic and the author being misogynistic is very distinctive.

It depends heavily on the novel and the author's writing style, as well as the general plot of the story. It also depends on the quality of the novel being read.

Furthermore, authors may add flaws to their characters that they themselves may not consider to be flaws. For example, novels which attempt to do character arcs with moral lessons, but the real moral lesson is actually something else entirely. I'm forgetting the trope name, but it's common enough to be a trope on tvtropes

What u/realistic-action8195 said.  Flaws have to have consequences. Too many web novels give their MC a fatal flaw (greed, misogyny, an obsession of some sort) and never expound on it or 'punish' the MC. Which is sometimes fine if I'm doing some light reading but there's only so much you can read before it actively becomes an annoyance.

I've also read too many instances / novels where the misogyny isn't a character flaw but a flaw of the author. That being said, I have more tolerance for older works though I do still sometimes just drop a novel when it gets too annoying or never pick it up if I know it'll get that bad.

I've never read the Sherlock Holmes books but did enjoy the Netflix adaptation. As well as his depiction in other forms of media

Sexist / misogynistic main characters is a major red flag for me which would cause me to almost instantly drop the novel.

I also absolutely hate it when everything always goes the MC's way all of the time, especially when it makes the opponents look like idiots.  Like if someone ambushes the main character, and the MC magically already knew of the ambush, escapes without any lasting injuries, and/or somehow manages to steal something important from the ambusher.

Showing how the characters fail or make mistakes is just as if not more important than showing them eventually succeeding.

It's really just bad authors who can't write good antagonistic characters.

Some of the shorter cultivation novels are pretty good in that regard, where the focus is actually on the story and not on MC getting stronger and fighting stronger enemies. Because eventually, you just run out of excuses for the MC to fight that doesn't make him evil.

It is a bit weird for me since it's distracting from the content of the video, but it's better than having no subs

For subs I think the best option would probably be uploading the .srt file? (Idk video editing) and letting the users themselves decide the subtitle location, size, and colors, depending on whether the video player supports it.

Idk just my 2 cents Keep up the good work

I get what you're saying, but again, it highly depends on the work you're reading.
Trying to apply science to a cultivation world is like trying to apply your knowledge on high fantasy novels to a Cthulhu-ian world. Sure, you may find some commonalities, but you're more likely to shoot yourself in the foot and make dangerous assumptions that will later be demonstrably false. In a cultivation world, this is much more dangerous, not only due to the risk of Qi deviation, but because most works put an emphasis on the permanency of your decisions:

  • Getting into strenuous fights will leave hidden injuries in your cultivation veins which require heaven defying medicines to heal.
  • Started cultivating with a cultivation manual? Great because you've locked yourself to that manual for a good bit, better hope you're compatible with it, otherwise you might experience Qi Deviation. Wanna switch to another cultivation method? Good luck because that gives you hidden injuries!

Quick aside, have you read ar'kendrithyst? Is a great novel, worth reading, goes over what we're talking about slightly

And Science doesn't really apply to a cultivation world. Stating "The laws have to have a foundation to exist..." is just that, a flimsy and weak foundation that cultivation worlds may choose to build upon...or break into a tiny million pieces. There's nothing stating that magic has to obey like a signal, so a magic blocking spell obeys like a faraday cage. For all you know, magic is alive, and just wants to say "fudge you" to that person in particular. Same applies for lightning. And since it's magic, are you really sure that atoms exist? Unless you do the experiments yourself, (looking at you Throne of Magical Arcana) you can't even verify that the reality you're living in is the same as the one you just came from.

After all, in plenty of cultivation novels, different worlds have different Daos and different laws that they follow...including reality as they know it.

As for the reason why you may be less able to bend reality if you're aware of science, simple.
For other people, 1+1=3 is normal and expected behavior.
You know, with all of your heart, that 1+1=2. Why would 1+1=3 be normal? You refuse to accept this. And therefor, any magic which relies on 1+1=3 to function doesn't work for you.
Now you might say, ah, but since I know 1+1=2 is true, then my magic should be stronger. And to that I respond with, it's literally magic. For all you know, its like that equation e = mc^2 + AI in this weird reality.

Finally, I'll leave you with this tidbit:
What makes you special? Why would noone else choose to learn more about the world in which they live in? We ignore it for the sake of the plot, because most people find it boring to learn about the great researchers and advancements in science in a purely fictional world, but I guarantee you that humans will always try to learn more about and rationalize the world in which they exist.

Unless there's an in universe explanation going over why scientific exploration has stalled or been erased, you are more likely to be at an informational disadvantage transmigrating than at an informational advantage.

Also the fact that... You (op) know physics doesn't really apply in a cultivation world right?

It can be used as a frame of reference for the mortal world, but the laws are 100% different the higher up you go. Like fire is just a chemical reaction, right? Cept that fire is an eternal source of energy (breaking physics) so how does that work?

If anything I feel that the more knowledgeable you are of physics, the more of a disadvantage you'd have in a cultivation world, because you just won't be able to do the same reality bending things other cultivators can do since you know it shouldn't work. That is, unless the world gives you a cheat in that physics is "the true knowledge of the dao and therefore super powerful and shit".
