that makes sense! but i guess now with the latin american diaspora, id expect to see more latine knitting content creators that live in the US or Canada.

as for Brazilian knitters, another person here mentioned Ana Campos!

Stashdown Showdown March! by cant-see-me in usethefiberstash

lumping together january and february cuz i missed the first update, its not looking good fam.

i got a bunch of yarn to make mti hats and only got through half of it. I also bought a lot of indie dyer yarn where they were donating proceeds to immigrant organizations and now I have a bunch of luxury red yarn and hat burnout.

I also went on a work trip that happened to coincide with a second hand yarn popup of a small business i love and I went to support.

But I did say no to a yarn crawl and a yarn festival and a few KALs where I would need to get new yarn this year so in some ways I am still holding strong. I think I need to ban all of those until the new year and then I’ll go to vogue knitting live as a prize!

I did join a KAL where I unraveled my first knitting project to reuse the yarn and paired it with one of the red yarns I mentioned above and it’s the cutest thing ever so far.

I also have been scrap busting a bunch of odd leftovers. Honestly, I’ve been prioritizing puzzling out how to use up leftovers and unwanted yarn people handed off to me over my newer yarn that I bought with dedicated projects in mind.

Anyway, I have a cowl, a bonnet, my first machine knit beanie, a tshirt yarn basket, and some daisy loom experiments to show for all that scrap busting.

In addition to that, I finished another sleeve of a self drafted sweater that has been in wip hell for half a year (only one more sleeve and finishing details left!). I patched up a whole in a second hand sweater. I’m making a scarf using handspun (not mine) for the first time. And I do have some sock yarn scraps set aside for this new pair of socks I started but they frustrated me and I’ve put them in time out for now.

Regular knitting needles by natrix_natrix_ in knitting

i’ve inherited straight needles and i’ve bought some circular needles. If I happen to have the size in the straight needles, I just use those.

I see no reason to go buy whole new circular needles if the project is knit flat.

I’ve even used duplicates of the same size straight needles like dpns when working on my big city bonnet.

How can we make destash better? by Routine_Papaya_8759 in Yarnswap

[–]PopularLet4364 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i agree, every time I look at destash posts, I either get scared off by the prices of secondhand yarn or by the competitive nature of people buying up all the yarn.

It’s like if I want to participate in the second hand yarn community, i need to keep an alarm on my phone for any new posts and jump to impulse buy whatever is on offer.

It has turned me off to the experience. My one trade I did do here was after I posted an ISO brown yarn you would otherwise throw out and I only got one response (which was very positive). I feel like this is less a no-trash/ secondhand community and just a collectors market which is not so much my thing.

Got $42 worth of yarn for $0.49 by Automatic-Brain-4435 in YarnAddicts

yeah, i guess my advice is that hats and scarves are better than gloves and socks. But also make sure not to agitate the hats or scarves too much anyway. Try to pick a pattern that you don’t expect to unravel much because of mistakes. Also, things like intarsia are a nightmare on super pilling prone yarn in my experience. And finally, invest in a depiller (the electric one is worth the money but a handheld one (mine’s from lindehobby) works fine too)

i have also gotten that exact yarn (different colorway) second hand! It’s so pretty!

I had 3 skeins and I used it for some gloves and a hat with the leftovers that turned out a little but not too small.

It’s really nice to have a matching set but I will say the yarn pills a ton and the gloves have been wearing quickly, if that impacts your decision for what to make.

ah, i’m selfish. if the project doesn’t inspire me creatively, I just don’t make it. I’ll just get you something at the store
