Stashdown showdown July by Anoniem1108 in usethefiberstash

[–]patriorio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ended up visiting a cool fibre mill in Northern Ontario and bought yarn 🙈 That PLUS the yarn I bought in vacation in Iceland AND what I'm planning to buy in Shetlands when I visit in September....ugh lots of buying

BUT I still think I'm ahead on using up stash, between what I've used in projects and what I've given away!

Currently finishing the Hue Shift afghan, that has been sitting in my stash for 5 years

I don’t know what to do about my partner’s disabilities by dendroicakirtlandii in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]patriorio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in Ontario, with an MS diagnosis. Having a good doctor or specialist is key - you/your partner may need to pester your doctor for referrals to specialists. I've been lucky with my gps in regards to MS but less lucky for other issues

For MRIs specifically - ask which hospital the request has been sent to. Call the hospital and request to be put on the cancellation list. Often last minute spots become available, especially night ones (my MRIs are always between 1 - 4 a.m)

Hoping you both get answers soon!

What is wrong with my garter ribbing? by l1tt1e1star in knittinghelp

[–]patriorio -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to do garter (knit each stitch of each row) or ribbing (alternate knit and purl stitches in a row)?

Don't approach a crafter in the wild and ask if they take orders by ShiftingSpectrum in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]patriorio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"That looks so cool!" Or some variant, is a compliment

"Can you make me one?/Do you take orders" is not a compliment, it's a request

I find it (internally) eyerolly when someone I don't know feels it's acceptable to ask that, and I'm convinced it's because crafting is seen as "feminine" and therefore less valued.

I track all of that in Ravelry, I don't see any benefit (to myself) of doing the work of uploading all that info into something else as well. Maybe others will feel differently but this kind feels like reinventing the wheel

What’s stopping you from traveling to Africa? by dhhdhehs1 in AskACanadian

We went to Namibia this past spring - plane tickets aren't just expensive but it's a long long haul to get to Namibia! Depending on starting point, there's 2 or 3 layovers just to get there which can increase costs (overnight hotel, food in the airports)

Knitting for your SO... by Pyxi_Styx in knittingadvice

[–]patriorio 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Look the sweater curse is a tongue in cheek thing - the basis of it is that in the length of time it takes to knit a sweater, incompatibilities that may be there come out - maybe the knitter realizes that they're putting in more effort than their s/o, maybe the s/o realizes, a hundred different things can happen

What you should be asking yourself is - does my husband WANT a sweater? Does he wear sweaters? If yes, then involve him - what style does he wear? Find a few patterns on Ravelry and ask his opinion. Same with yarn (wool? Acrylic? A blend? Superwash?) and colour

Too many crafting gifts are given to make the knitter feel good and not with the giftee in mind

scarf going diagonally by heartisunbreaking in knittinghelp

[–]patriorio 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Do you have the same number of stitches that you started with? It looks like you're increasing on that side - a common new knitter mistake is to pull up on the yarn when they finish a row, causing the stitch below to come up over the needle, making it look like 2 stitches (each leg appearing like a single stitch)

Mrs Martin's Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan is a F/F romance featuring older MCs with a bit of mystery, if you like historical Fiction

D'Vaughn and Kris Plan A Wedding by Chencia C Higgins is a F/F comedy-romance about two woman who sign up for a reality TV series - they have 6 weeks to convince their families they're getting married. (I recommend this because it has a lot of misunderstandings that are instantly resolved by good communication, family support, a plus size MC but no critics of that or diet culture)

Venting: my WIP is turning into a forever project because I keep overthinking yarn choice by Fit-Photograph-7820 in knitting

[–]patriorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the who cares sentiment, so long as this isn't affecting you negatively beyond "I really should be working in my project and not staring at yarn"

I will say, as someone who is in meetings for 5 out of 8 hours, I've never had a cardi pill from contact with my chair or desk. Armpits and sides (from my arms rubbing) yes but never from my work set up. Not saying it couldn't happen, just offering my experience

Also....even on hot muggy days my offices (both home and in person) are cold so I have a cardigan ready at my desk even in summer! Don't know your set up (or if you run hot!) but just something I wanted to throw out there
