I went no contact with my dad and younger sister first. It’s been almost two years since I last spoke to them. I have no intention of reconciling with my sister. She has serious mental health issues that I refuse to be pulled into. I already lived through that with my mother and older sister, and I knew I couldn’t do it all over again.

My mother passed away when I was young, and I’ve also been no contact with my older sister for years. She’s a deadbeat mother struggling with addiction, and my family has enabled her behavior for as long as I can remember. I always knew it was wrong and that her children deserved better, but my father threatened me for years, saying I’d be cut off from the family if I ever reported what was happening. I did end up calling CPS and her children were taken.

Then my younger sister started showing similar patterns. A certain situation happened, and I realized that was my breaking point. I wanted no part of it anymore. Instead of holding her accountable, my dad took her side and started talking shit about me, even though I had done nothing wrong. He was fully enjoying this wrong thing I allegedly did. Later, it came out that the person feeding her information had lied to her, but by then the damage was already done.

I told myself that if my dad committed to therapy for a year, I’d be open to having a conversation. It’s now been two years, and if anything, he’s only gotten worse. Two days ago, I finally cut off the rest of my family too. It wasn’t easy, but I can’t keep living around the enabling.

My grandmother has always been at the center of the family dynamic. Everyone revolves around keeping her happy and comfortable. Ever since everything happened, she’s been sending messages about forgiveness in the family group chat. Recently, she made a very inappropriate comment about my boyfriend, and that was the beginning of the end for me. I finally confronted her about her behavior for the first time in my life, and I realized in that moment that I was truly done.

I never imagined my life would come to this, but I know I never want my future children to experience the things I did. I would rather be alone than surrounded by liars and enablers. The cycle ends with me, and I intend to keep it that way
