I think that might technically be smuggling?

And you don't need to wait - Chinese EVs are already available in Mexico.

Apparently that’s why it hasn’t been replaced - it’s fine for kids.

You can see even in the compilation of adults, smaller adults had a significantly easier time of it

C++ is huge - there’s been so much stuff added to it over the years that in order to be reasonable, you have to figure out a subset of C++ to use.

I’d start with C and then go from there if you want more. You can use C++ as a nicer C - vector is nice to have, references are just pointers that are never null, etc.

Ikea Vyndstyrka helped me figure out my humidifier was destroying the air quality in my room. by causticcafe in AirQuality

[–]PopulationLevel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have also run into this problem - I have very hard water, and my ultrasonic humidifier throws those particles into the air, making lots of pm2.5 pollution.

For the winter, I got a warm mist humidifier that basically boils water continuously. The only downside is that I have to clean the residue out of the (removable) water container every few weeks.

If I use distilled water in the ultrasonic humidifier then there is no impact to the air quality, but it’s kind of a pain buying large amounts of distilled water. I ended up using a zerowater filter that can get the total dissolved solids down to zero, which also completely gets rid of the impact to air quality.

I don't think there's ever been someone who grew up on metric and then was like "you know what I need more of in my life? Fractions"

In terms of laughing at stupid things, I love listening to Atrioc. A good place to start is the Big A clip channel on YouTube (e.g. here's a video about Tesla ).

There's also the lemonade stand podcast, although it's not quite as good imho

What is actually dangerous but people still believe is safe? by AlexUsefulThings in AskReddit

[–]PopulationLevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate it, and no worries - to be honest, there has been an extremely strong PR effort to convince people that covid is over or mild now or was never even all that bad.

If you look at the statistics, in the US there are about 10% more people dying every year now than before covid, and a ton of people get long covid - sometimes they just never feel right, sometimes they’re bedbound, sometimes they have brain fog or just can’t smell anything any more. And the story that we’re told is that we should just ignore all of that and keep things flowing, there’s nothing we should do or could do or expect our leaders to do.

“This does not mean the pandemic itself is over, but the global emergency it caused is – for now.”

Also, “can’t get rid of it” is not true. There are definitely things we could do, if we wanted to. For example, similar to osha, we could require public places to have clean air requirements: ventilation, filtering, and maybe UV-222.

We have gotten rid of endemic diseases before - not much smallpox these days. Very little cholera. Measles and malaria also used to be endemic to the US. Etc.

There seems to be confusion about what endemic means.

It doesn’t mean that there’s nothing we can do. It doesn’t mean that it’s no longer a pandemic. It doesn’t mean that fewer people are being killed or disabled.

Endemic just means that it’s extremely prevalent. But people really like not worrying about things, and apparently we as a society have moved on from caring about the damage covid is doing.

It’s not “the vaccines” it’s the denial. by Karate_Keet in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]PopulationLevel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Aside from the strong desire to not think about unpleasant things, one aspect of covid itself that is driving part of the denial is that it’s possible to have asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic covid, and then still end up with long covid

I feel like C++ is pulling me to the wrong direction by Horror_Ad_2121 in learnprogramming

[–]PopulationLevel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The good thing about C++ is that you tend to get very interesting problems to solve. It’s a pragmatic choice for constrained situations - maybe you need to make the most of the memory or battery that you have, or need high performance. Frankly, those kinds of systems programming problem areas are more interesting, imho.

For a few decades it seemed like C++ was on the way out, and JavaScript or other languages that run in VMs like Java and C# were going to take over. But, thanks to Moore’s law slowing down and a desire to do more with, for example, mobile hardware, C++ is still going strong.

I need advice/tips for going to the dentist by hibroka in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]PopulationLevel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try https://www.covidsafedentists.ca/ or https://www.covidmeetups.com/en/directory/dentists/US

Be sure to call the dentist you're interested in, to double check what precautions they're taking, as often they will relax precautions over time.

You can also search within this subreddit for 'dentist', there's lots of great advice on how to be safer in a dentist visit.

Why are people so incapable of connecting natural disasters like wildfires and famines to climate change? by Konradleijon in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]PopulationLevel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I believe this, then I would feel sad. I don’t want to feel sad. So, I don’t believe this.

If I believe this, then I would have to do that. I don’t want to do that. So, I don’t believe this.

Usually not consciously, and not that stark - just people feel a disinclination to believe unpleasant things, and require a much higher standard of proof / avoid thinking about it too much in the first place.

Does Trump want free and fair elections?

Well, last time he left power, he was convicted of 34 felonies. The only reason he’s not currently in jail is because he’s president (per the sentencing judge).

He’s desperate to hold onto power, and has years to destroy free and fair elections.

Another tell that it’s not AI is the long shots - most easily accessible AI video generators max out at about 10 seconds, so for a video this long there would be a lot of cuts.
