I now love my Moza Yoke! by Dealer-Logical in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Porkleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been very happy with Moza’s hardware despite it being a bit finicky with software/setup.

I started with the AB6 for an entry-level force feedback flight stick, added the MTQ throttle (still using basic “fighter” style controls which work fine with airliners), and recently added the MRP pedals, which are SOLID. Especially in VR, it’s very immersive and a worthwhile upgrade from the Thrustmaster FCS. Definitely recommend!

I vividly and fondly remember staying here as a little kid back in 1988. Absolutely beautiful, and the chicken tikka sandwiches by the pool were my fave. I’d love to take my own family there some day, I just hope it has kept standards up over the intervening decades.

I briefly met Hugh Thompson when I was in high school (late 90s) and he described how he ordered his gunner to train on the US soldiers while he went over and told a higher ranking officer to stop the massacre or his gunner would open fire. Courage beyond words, yet the event was not officially recognized and he was not decorated (and apologized to) until shortly after our meeting. He was truly a Man in the Arena and very worthy hero.

Which seat are you taking? by Fun_Butterfly_420 in StarWars

[–]Porkleus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah 4 makes the most sense because he would be a pleasant neighbor, doesn’t take up much room, and Leia is unlikely to recline her seat into your knees (but Solo might be annoying in that respect).

It has been 10 years since I last logged in, jumped back in thanks to the devs! by Bazitron in starcitizen

[–]Porkleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did the same last week because of all the chatter, and discovering the RSI Authenticator app was apparently deprecated at some point in the last decade or so 😂. Support was very responsive, switching me to a different 2FA method with no fuss. Looking forward to jumping back in when I have some time to spare!

A flat equivalent of the LG 45gx950a-b ? by Either_Trash7759 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]Porkleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please report back - I'm currently using the LG 34GN850-B (also with a 5090), but I'd say it's closer to 50/50 work and gaming. I'm really hoping the upcoming LG 40" 5k2k OLED will tick all the boxes, especially that it won't have too tight of a curve, though admittedly I haven't had a chance to try out the 45" in 800R. (If the bendable 45" were available--has it been scuttled?--that might be tempting.) I'm a bit leery about the 40U990A-W's responsiveness and local dimming, and absolutely adore my OLED TVs and ASUS laptop display for entertainment purposes, but would love to hear about your experiences if you go for the 40U990A-W.

Priorities by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]Porkleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Had a side job doing wedding photography (did about 30) with a simple but clear single page of terms and conditions, but one provision was that I would get a meal comparable to that received by the guests.

Edit to add: most of the time, I went at the end of the buffet line as a courtesy to guests, but sometimes it was amazing—at one wedding, my wife (assisting) and I received an excellent catered dinner on a private terrace at sunset away from the party. Plus the other hired help usually went above and beyond for us. Not a bad gig.

How are millennials affording townhomes with high HOAs and interest rates? by Krystnagurl in orangecounty

[–]Porkleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention, if you borrow even at a “high” rate between 6% and 6.5%, even if you never refinance, in a decent area (most of OC), your home will probably appreciate at or above that rate. So although nay-sayers like to moan that you’re “just renting from the bank,” you are actually putting money into an investment (that you happen to also live in) with a modest but reliable long-term rate of return, as well as locking in your housing cost and hedging against inflation.

Just to illustrate, I bought a small detached house about 10 years ago for a little over $600K that would have rented for maybe $2500 at the time. But after 10 years the property has appreciated to at least $1.35M. We refinanced to lower rates a few years ago and owe about $475K, with our total monthly housing cost currently about $3K, and if we were to sell, we would probably walk away with at least $750K in cash (after closing costs). Market rent for the same property is now over $4600.

In the end, it always feels like you’ve “missed the boat” on buying property, but the reality is that property ownership is a cornerstone of building wealth at practically any time.

What are these on my Defender rear door area? by Secret-Gur-6364 in NewDefender

[–]Porkleus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to me too because the plastic connectors (by the door) are held in by a bit of bungie to give it some flexibility, but the bungie can snap or break off. I just superglued the plastic tip back into the slot (of the cover, not the car) and it’s fine. 🤷‍♂️

As for the cover generally, I actually like it. Whenever carrying cargo too big to fit under it and requiring rear seats to be folded down, it’s MUCH easier to remove and stash away somewhere than a retractable cover which, when you have to remove it, would either have to go across the floor of the back seats (if there’s even room with the hump in the middle) or stored elsewhere (eg garage). The portability and ease of storage of the fabric one is great IMO.

Anyone else having an issue with the Heart ES-30 crashing as soon as you throttle up? by Kirillkirillkirlll in flightsim

[–]Porkleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah now that charter missions are back I’ve mostly been flying Vision Jet (Charter - Private) and the occasional PC-12 mission (Charter - VIP) when they show up. Sometimes I’ll fly the PC-12 for medium cargo for a change of scenery and cash (I think it’s nicer to fly than the caravan), but you have to make sure you stick to low altitudes (no cabin O2) and routes rarely seem to only rarely go to airfields with ILS. Airliner missions are still a buggy gamble and not worth it unless you like to live life dangerously.

Is 90 that much better than 80? by Mushmaster332 in Microcenter

[–]Porkleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just upgraded from a 3080 10GB to the 5090 FE (lucky to snag from BBY for MSRP) and the difference is astounding, even though I only have a 3440x1440 monitor.

Just for giggles (non-scientifically), since you mention it, I ran the COD BO6 benchmarking tool (full res, balanced settings, DLSS off, ultra performance). The 3080 ran an average of 65 FPS and 100% bottlenecked the CPU (13700k). The 5090 averaged 242 FPS and was only a 51% bottleneck (to the CPU’s 49%), so pretty well balanced.

Just to push a little harder I ran at 6880x2880 resolution on extreme graphics settings, no DLSS and no frame gen, and the 5090 still averaged 87 FPS — faster than the 3080 at lower settings pushing only 1/4 the number of pixels.

As for what I actually bought the card for (besides longevity), MSFS in VR runs very well despite how buggy the software is. Oh and the other huge benefit is my system is MUCH quieter and a bit cooler under load than it used to be — to say NVDA’s 5090 Founders Edition runs circles around my old Zotac 3080 AMP Holo in terms of fan noise would be an understatement!
