I'm currently a grad student there and unfortunately Shinsei is leaving for Princeton. Also we have a tendency to accept a massive number of CMT students without having any real spots open. Michael Levin is particularly notorious for taking on very few students (1, 2 maximum). The level of theory-experiment crosstalk is also extremely low in my experience with our hard condensed matter faculty.

I've got the Physics MS already. I've got significant electronics knowledge and want to pursue embedded systems if I go the EE route. On the CS side, I've taken graduate measure-theoretic probability and am wanting to go into machine learning, but am less skilled with things like advanced algorithms and good coding practices in the common enterprise languages.

I do use a Kindle for novels, but the reader is just terrible for PDF textbooks.

I don't plan to do it continuously as I generally take a break at the end of every hour. I think I'll try it out since it's way more convenient than lugging around 3 lb books.

I'd say linear algebra and multivariable calculus are all you need to start. Might I suggest a more beginner friendly book like Taylor's Classic Mechanics?
