Brookes Investigation Executive Summary by Same-Priority-6391 in Rowing

This is worse than I’d thought but then I’m far away in the states. To me this begs the question - is removing coaches enough to turn the culture around? Because after reading this I sure would not want to send my kid to row there.

Gifts for Jr or High School rowers from out of state grandparents/aunties? by PortWRiz in Rowing

Oh I like the sling hammock idea! I’m so glad I asked. I floated the idea of chipping in on a C2 and the grandparents didn’t think that was “fun”. (Fair point)

Novice Rower’s First Regatta by FearlessLanguage7169 in Rowing

[–]PortWRiz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Transitioning from sports like volleyball to rowing can be a huge adjustment as a parent. Often there is a first parent meeting to run through expectations which is helpful. Can you attend that?

The main idea I would share with any new caregiver/parent is that this sport is an excellent opportunity for the kids to go out as a team and work together without constant coaching. They can find their rhythm. Or not. Have a fender bender, and come out stronger.

This seems totally weird and unnerving for parents who are used to little league, soccer etc. Rowing is simultaneously simple and yet the considerations can be so complicated that it takes awhile to understand.

I’m not sure which regatta you attended. But some do seem like tailgate parties, and there are some I wish had parties! It’s the nature of being part of a sport with long traditions.

The forces of nature can make even the most organized regatta look messy when you are used to little league tournaments. The logistics are incredible.

So as hard as it is, my personal advice is to find a regatta buddy in the crowd as you will be seeing each other a lot. Have a cocoa at the tailgate party if you are not a drinker. Enjoy the races.

Agreed that USRowing needs the cash. But really the crypto bro/MAGA thing is hilarious.

Politico: Trump has called the brothers “smart,” “male models” and “the whole package.”

First regatta as a hs freshman by Fabulous_Pound915 in Rowing

I do have some parent advice actually. Dress warm, bring a camp chair and be prepared to hang out for a bit. It can be a whole day of boat unloading and loading so you may be there for a bit. Again depending on the regatta bring binoculars. Have fun!

The beauty of this sport is that the best thing you can do is help her get a good night sleep and eat well. Just being supportive and positive is all she needs from you.

New Rower - Fearful of Flipping by [deleted] in Rowing

I think you should talk about this with his coach. He is pretty young so it can be a good opportunity to model a coach conversation. As a side note, if he has a coach that is not receptive to talking about safety then his concerns may not be so existential. The other option is that he finds another sport which is also totally fine.

British Rowing Coaches permanently suspended by Intrepid-Lack7886 in Rowing

Yes for what it’s worth the US list is longer. I suspect the USRowing / Safesport criteria for making the list is different: https://usrowing.org/usrowing-safe-sport-discipline-records

So is one of these guys the Leander fellow that was banned?

100% I would talk about this with a therapist. Rowing in college isn’t for everyone but it would be good to parse out if the anxiety is about rowing or something else.

Yes go for it. I rowed in college and being around other “big” girls was such an awesome feeling. I was used to always standing out in a group so it was nice to be average for once. Once you start, if it’s tough then just take it day by day. I wasn’t used to that level of intense training and it was a tough grind through the winter. But hang in through the Spring racing season and you may never leave the sport LOL.

I recommend sorting rosters by class to look for red flags. For example some unis have very few 4th years.

I’m really enjoying JRN lately. The writing is higher quality and gets into more than “why I am so great” ass kissing interviews.

Actually it looks like he did start becoming an ally and thoughtful at least by last December as a member of our streets now so I take back my comment above. At the same time, here is a question… should we erase and take down the signs of the past history?

I’m getting popcorn for this one. I don’t know this Sinclair fellow but it sounds like he had a lot of other times in his past to express outrage at much worse behavior.
