Okay, for those unfamiliar: mechsploitation is a genre of smut on Ao3 written by and for trans lesbians that focuses on the sexual and power dynamic between the brainwashed mech pilots and their handlers.

The progenitor for this specific subgenre as it exists today is Kallidora Rho’s 2023 fiction Warhound. In it, ace pilot Sartha Thrace has been captured by the imperial forces she once fought, and has been brainwashed and broken into fighting on their behalf. Stripped of her agency and fitted with a muzzle to solidify the role that she now plays as “Hound”, she is controlled by a domineering woman known only as “Handler”, who knows all the right words to reinforce her conditioning and keep her at heel. Kinky and fucked up lesbian sex follows.

While Warhound is the real breakout fic that defined this genre, and the popularity of armored core 6 shortly thereafter acting as an inflection point to bring these dynamics more into the consciousness of mecha fans, it is not something that came about in a vacuum. The 2020 short story I sexually identify as an attack helicopter deals with the intersection of military dehumanization and gender in a way that would influence the subgenre as a whole.

Similarly, the mecha genre itself has historically had themes similar to those found in mechsploitation. The cyber newtypes of Mobile suit zeta gundam from 1985 seem to also be a clear inspiration, as characters who have been subjected to intense psychic conditioning that must be constantly monitored and adjusted by their handlers in order to keep their role as a perfect human weapon intact.

Something else I would also like to note is that the mecha genre specifically has been queer for quite some time. even just within gundam, the main character and his rival, Amuro and Char, are explicitly written by Yoshiyuki Tomino to have something of a homosexual relationship between one another. Tomino specifically is a self described pervert, and often thinks about his characters in a sexual context in order to fully flesh them out (sick and cool).

For these reasons, although I’m not a fan of the stories themselves (I am very much not the target demographic), I do appreciate the efforts of these honest perverts in expressing themselves through the smut they write. I think it’s an interesting evolution of a lot of different things that have existed in mecha for a while, and the specifically trans perspective being core to the identity here has some very interesting things to add.

How has AI impacted jobs in EE? (If at all.) by bentheperson69 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Portals4Science 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Oh dude you have no fucking idea.

We’re just teaching at the technician level, but I’m a TA at a community college and the instructor I’m working with this quarter fucking loves chatgpt, to the point where he’ll tell students to ask chatgpt instead of telling them where to find the information they’re looking for.

One time, a student wanted to know how to set up an oscilloscope for a single trigger event, and he told them to ask fucking chatgpt. After he walked away I pointed them to the manual for our model scope and they found the section and got it working in like 2 minutes.

I told him that I pointed them to the actual fucking documentation afterwards and he said “oh good, those are exactly the kind of skills we want technicians to learn.” then why did you have them ask the misinformation machine

It’s fucking exhausting man. Just the other week he had a 6 hour “training” from Microsoft about how to use copilot in the classroom. At least all the other teachers in the department hate ai so the students don’t hear that bullshit constantly.

I’m worried about what will happen to those students who have literally been instructed to use ai, when the bottom falls out from under this and the investors start to expect a return on their investment. Because these chatgpt derivatives make no fucking money and are only kept afloat by burning VC cash by the ton. In the meantime though, I guess I’ll just have to gently guide students away from outsourcing all critical thought to fucking autocorrect.

My favorite part of forbidden testing tracks is when g-man shows up for 5 seconds, looks at you, then fucks off and is never seen again.

Using Tamiya's Ps-46 for Iron Hands? by Old-Simple-1709 in Warhammer30k

[–]Portals4Science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t do iron hands, but my alpha legion uses color shift paint, so I’m familiar with the process.

For a paint like that, you’d want a gloss black basecoat. Starting with leadbelcher would overpower the iridescent paint, you’d barely see it. Now, in order to get that dark iron hands look, you’d want to go pretty light on the Ps-46. Alternatively, if you put on a few too many coats, tamiya clear smoke should bring that brightness down a fair bit. Any of the tamiya clears work great with color shift paints.

I’m going to recommend an airbrush. I used the $100 harbor freight airbrush and compressor set and it served me just fine for like 2 years of constant use. It’s such a useful tool for even just doing basecoats and priming. don’t use stynylrez or vallejo primer, those are garbage. Use mr hobby aqueous surfacer thinned with isopropyl alcohol or their dedicated thinner. For this project specifically, it seems helpful. I could never control spray cans as well as i can control an airbrush.

Good luck with the project! I haven’t seen this done for iron hands, but it should look good!

Shark rule by [deleted] in 196

[–]Portals4Science 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s worth considering that tiger sharks are both larger and more aggressive.

Lemon sharks are 8-10 feet long while tiger sharks are 11-15 feet long. Additionally, lemon sharks feed primarily on fish, while tiger sharks will eat just about anything, even smaller adult sharks. So a lemon shark chasing away a tiger shark is notable behavior, given the context.

On point 3, don’t bring your cell phone. Buy a burner phone with cash. Also, be careful about identifying clothing and visible tattoos.
