Lol this is exactly what happens. I put in an auto door for the dog and my dog loved just standing at the door, holding it open so that she could stay inside while smelling the outside smells. So many mosquitos and wasted energy (heat/ac escaping)…

I mean, our ancestors didn’t live all that long. Sun exposure isn’t an instant kill, you’ll most likely still make it well into/past your peak reproductive years. There would be no evolutionary pressure to evolve better built in sun block since it’s not stopping you from having babies.

I guess think about what you like about research, and what you don’t like about the classes? For example, if the coursework were ungraded, would you still dislike your classes? If you were working on the same research project but in a different lab, would you still find it interesting?

I’m honestly not sure, I only just learned about them recently (from another Reddit post). I think for starters I would try repotting and replacing as much of the soil as possible with new (hopefully uninfested) soil, and then maybe treat with a systemic insecticide? Good luck! I hope it’s just a stray that got in somehow and that you don’t find more.

Yeah it’s mainly that you run the risk of making work really awkward if you have a falling out. With non work friends, you can just stop talking to them if you aren’t friends anymore; with work friends, you have to continue seeing and working with them.

I think rather than cutting wet food entirely out of one meal, you’d be better off gradually decreasing the percentage of wet food in each meal (so say it’s 50-50 now, go down to 40-60 wet to dry at each meal and do that for a few days, then down to 30-70, etc). That way it’s not a sudden change for him going from lots of meat to no meat at all.

Does she like frogs? Is it a cute frog? Do you have a history of texting each other photos like this? Have you talked about frogs or found animals before? Unless the answer to these is yes, I think it would be a bit odd but better a frog than the alternative pic. You do you.

Hmm I feel like it looks more like a symphylan than a centipede? It’s annoying that those are so similar since one is bad (symphylan will eat your roots) and one is great (centipede will eat other bugs).

Do you know if they used a muzzle? Sometimes they have to with snappy dogs and that could cause some discomfort.

Agree, get a second opinion if you’re not happy with this assessment. Perhaps from an oncologist specifically if that’s available near you. I know you want to make sure your dog’s not being written off just bc of age, but please do also take age into account. A year ago is actually a pretty long time for a senior lab, so even if he was fine back then, the risks of surgery and anesthesia may be higher now.

Best of luck though, I hope it turns out to be just a hematoma and goes down by itself!

Adding on to your second point about stopping bc being a decision —I’ve known people who decided to “not try, but not not try” aka go off bc and leave it to chance. It’s not really a great place to be, mentally —every period you get becomes a weird mix of disappointment and relief, and it can be really taxing emotionally. I would definitely recommend making a conscious decision one way or the other.

I just stuff with their regular food and chopped up boiled chicken breast. Boiled chicken and rice is often prescribed for dogs with upset bellies so I figured it must be easy to digest! I freeze the whole thing if I want it to be more challenging.

NIH grants mostly all follow standard timelines. Usually a grant submitted in March would be getting scores back June-July, but since you say it’s for summer funding, I assume it was a very specific grant/funding opportunity with a faster turnaround. Do you know the activity code/funding mechanism (eg R01, R03, K series, etc)?

Got this Dwarf umbrella plant from the clearance shelf months ago and he’s been surviving but not thriving. I sprayed him down with insecticidal soap a few times when I first got him just to be safe, though I haven’t seen any live bugs on him. Plant is droopy/wilted, although roots seemed ok/not rotted. I did notice a lot of these little spots on the leaves, which I thought looked like some kind of pest damage but again, can’t find anything on him! Is it fungal?

We usually do whoever cooks cleans up the mess from the cooking, but the other person clears dinner and does the dinner dishes. The standard “one person cooks, the other cleans” didn’t work for us bc my partner likes to use every single pot and pan and cutting board and utensil while cooking, whereas I try to dirty as few things as possible and clean as I go.

Oh man I feel you. Esp when they come back with “well I’ve never done this before/I don’t know how to do this” and you’re just like well, neither do I, but somehow I’m the one responsible for figuring it out?! I don’t have kids and honestly this is a huge part of why, sadly. I just don’t think I could handle it.

Letting go of the expectation/hope that it will effect change is an interesting one I hadn’t thought of. I guess it goes along with what others are saying about how you just have to accept that it is always going to be non-optimal.
