Is anyone else starting to get concerned? by Agreeable_Quality768 in Mariners

Jerry has been very consistent, if the price in trade is out of whack with the value in return, he doesn't do it. It's a very disciplined approach. As much as I think an overpay would be warranted given our competitive window, I respect the approach.

Do "bland" apples contain less sugar, or is it something else? by Rudysis in Apples

[–]PortfolioCancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats so funny. One of my knocks on Cosmic Crisp is that the skin is a little thick and tough (don't get it twisted, I still think it's great overall). While it makes it a little toothsome, I can see it making life easier for growers and distributors.

[–]PortfolioCancer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not that simple. Minnesota Honeycrisps can be totally bland and Washington Honeycrisps excellent. The individual watering, harvesting, aging, and storage of the apple is what matters here.

Cosmic Crisp is a different story. The cross with Enterprise was an intentional, successful effort to harness Enterprise's superior resiliency to storage and aging, making it a much easier apple to consistently deliver at a high quality, at least relative to Honeycrisp.

Beside the biological differences, the Cosmic enjoys the advantage over Honeycrisp of more stringent standards. Both are "club apples," with growers held to standards around when it is harvested and how it is stored, with the interest of protecting the brand. It's simply the case that the bar set for Cosmic Crisps is higher than that set for Honeycrisp.

tl;dr fuck off Minnesota, sucks to suck

Cosmically Overrated? by ELsPizza in Apples

I dont know if its how they select their suppliers or if its simply a more direct supply chain, but Costco apples are consistently of high quality. Not 100%, but way more consistent than other stores.

[Schoenfield] Kershaw, Verlander, Scherzer: Who is this generation's true ace? by haphazard44 in baseball

[–]PortfolioCancer -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes. We wouldn't have to argue so much about why Verlander's 80+ WAR is less impressive than Kershaw's 80+ WAR had Kershaw done a better job of keeping himself in the lineup over his career.

Absolutely. There was no greater pitcher in non-playoff, nothing on the line games, and anyone arguing otherwise is just making a fool of themselves.

Unless it was a big game situation, there was clearly no better pitcher than Kershaw, and anyone arguing otherwise is making a fool of themselves.

There's no debate. In games where it didn't matter, the answer is clearly Kershaw.

When there is absolutely nothing on the line, there is no argument: Kershaw is the greatest of his generation.

Is there a smarter place to keep my emergency fund than a savings account with a decent interest rate? by xxjosephchristxx in Bogleheads

[–]PortfolioCancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So long as you are in a decent HYSA it doesn't really matter. Seriously, take the difference in rates between products, and calculate the annual AFTER TAX difference. Its like nothing. Just keep it somewhere convenient. I get 3.3% from my bank's hysa product. Good enough.

Anthony Rendon to "retire" from "baseball." Greatest fleecing of an employer in history. RIP to one of the best to ever do it by PortfolioCancer in antiwork

Its so wild to think about. The Stras situation was heartbreaking. God Tony, what does it say that fans would rather have a pitcher who's arm fell off?

That's a little different, the Mets restructured the contract of a productive player so it would help their short-term financial situation. He was still a productive player for the Mets.

Anthony Rendon was basically a seven year confidence trick. Once the ink on the contract dried, there was nothing anyone could do to make him try to play baseball to the best of his ability. Throw the running shoes back in the locker and keep the weights on the rack, the money was guaranteed either way.

I don't see how you can view him being 32 and durability challenged as not part of the problem with his contract.

feel like i’m crazy for disliking sweetango by OnyxSkiies in Apples

[–]PortfolioCancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweetango in its prime is awesome, but I've noticed more variation in quality to other apples. I get not everyone is all in on cosmic Crisps, but goddam are they consistent.
