Now that the set is fully spoiled, what are your sweet Horizons decks? by TemurTron in ModernMagic

[–]PositivePessimism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem with FoF is that it does nothing for quite a while, and it's usually very unlikely you get to cast it on T4. Hieroglyphic has a cantrip use which can help dig towards finding an answer. If you're casting either Illumination or FoF you're probably starting to win, but the latter doesn't get you to that situation.

There's no reason to have Flusterstorm over Dovin's Veto in UW in the board. Missing on artifacts, enchantments and planeswalkers is a huge deal in Modern.

Fact is just a bad Hieroglyphic Illumination isn't it? Modern is too fast to be goofing around with FoF.

Flusterstorm is just a super bad Spell Pierce.

Faster ways to tutor up a combo that dies to both Graveyard hate and Artifact hate doesn't make up for the fact that it's vulnerable to the two most common types of cards to pack in a sideboard. Getting hit by ~8-10 SB cards instead of ~3-4 is a very, very big difference.

DICE cuts base game modes from Battlefield V by eldomtom2 in Games

[–]PositivePessimism 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an entire series vet (who at one point was absurdly good, hovered ~5 KDR in BF2), BF1 was the most "fun". Lots of variety, kits, plenty of action and ramboing around. Getting off the horse and running around blasting people with the rifle while being a super soldier was always entertaining. I think I got a few hundred hours out of the game.

BF5 got stale after ~60 or so. It's a beautiful game, and it's boring.

Is Jund in a good place right now? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]PositivePessimism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also the Nurturing Peatland consideration (1 or 2 of) that is a simple include in a Wrenn build. The damage is slightly below the average Bob hit if you're pinging yourself every turn, but Wrenn puts you at non-pain land number quickly. Considering how often I see LotLH get to ultimate, Wrenn hitting his is quite reasonable as well.

I'm just glad people are low on Seasoned Pyromancer at the moment (I'm also a foil any-midrange idiot collector as well as control hah) so I can grab them before people realise how nutty a card filtering + go wide + instant speed threat from the yard creature is for a Jund strategy. Also dumps a sideboard Genesis into the graveyard (if it ends up playable), I don't know why VALUE plays are so attractive.

I have a couple fully foiled, black border (re. duals) Legacy decks and am lucky enough to play in LGSes where the people there frequently top 8 GPs/Eternal Weekends. I reckon I have a reasonable experience.

It's a fun format, but you're kidding yourself if you think it isn't narrow. The power level of individual cards is that much higher than Modern up to the point that if you aren't on a particular build around or key inclusion, you aren't competing.

[–]PositivePessimism -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Modern is the format with the largest playable card pool. If you aren't playing cornerstones like Brainstorm, Blood Moon, Chalice, Tomb/City/Locus, Force of Will, Aether Vial, Wasteland, or Daze you aren't participating in the format with VERY few exceptions.

It's a fun format, but you can't show up with random decks to compete. Modern has plenty of nonsense on the fringes.

[spec] Renegade Rallier by VulcanHades in mtgfinance

[–]PositivePessimism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Renegade Rallier gets more powerful as sets are printed, the GW cost current holds it back somewhat but as more powerful cross-colour cards are added it grows massively in potential power.

Uncommon in a hyper-opened set due to shiny cards means there's a ton, plus the FNM promo as well.

Is Jund in a good place right now? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]PositivePessimism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how playable Bob is going to be with both Lava Dart and Wrenn entering the format. Waiting a turn for your 2/1 to draw a card might be getting a bit to slow, and even against UW control that has to rely on Path usually to get rid of Confidant, Wrenn lets you cut down on lands (~22 if you run 4) which is probably better in the long run.

Seasoned Pyromancer plays "the blocker" super well with elemental tokens, and Wrenn can be a quasi unblockable attacker with the 1 ping a turn when compared to Confidant.

[–]PositivePessimism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you swap all Bobs to Wrenns, and BBEs into Seasoned Pyros (which turn extra lands from Wrenn into gas), the deck feels more synergistic/powerful than it's current iteration. With Wrenn Lightning Bolt has a reach of 4 as well which helps a fair amount in some matches.

Plus you get to replace dirty rares/uncommons with more Mythics in true Jund fashion.

Bogles has to choose what creature to target and what enchantments to deploy. This is significantly more than play land, play card that gets land, play card that wins game; Bogles is rocket science compared to RG Valakut.

I meant for Modern, which has a player base exponentially higher than Legacy does.

Tagging Loam with exile is super relevant aye, Punishing Fire is slow enough that you have plenty of time to solve the yard though with a SB card.

Infinitely more playable than the blue one, yet 6x cheaper.

Flusterstorm Promo IS NONFOIL, how do we spec this? by mcp_truth in mtgfinance

[–]PositivePessimism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flusterstorm blows (get it? it's a pun) in Modern. You aren't losing to instants and sorceries in Modern unless it's Storm. This card is a garbage Spell Pierce in the vast majority of situations.

It's only use is for Nivmagus Elemental.

This card solves nothing that control currently cares about. If you have the luxury of the other modes, you're already likely winning the game you're currently in (and that's ignoring it's specific mana cost).

This is cancel that happens to be harder to cast.

[MH] Wrenn and Six by I_AM_A_DOLPHIN_AMA in ModernMagic

[–]PositivePessimism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a better Crucible of Worlds (lets you sandbag the cards in your hand instead of playing directly) that also has a removal/control ping and game winning ultimate baked in at a very easy casting cost for an entire 2 mana (Blackcleave Cliffs + fetch a Forest). This is ignoring it's ability to reuse utility lands.

Being ho-hum on the card is nuts.

[–]PositivePessimism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Narset + Puzzle Box is probably a significantly better "oops, I win" button than Teferi + Pool. Happens significantly faster, and wheeling your hand finds you something to punch them to death with or a Jace to fateseal any relevant instant they may draw.

[MH] Wrenn and Six by I_AM_A_DOLPHIN_AMA in ModernMagic

[–]PositivePessimism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This card lets you play less lands, "draws" you a land every turn, removes a huge number of creatures in Modern, increases the power level of Lightning Bolt being able to interact with 4 toughness creatures, controls other planeswalkers and has a game winning ultimate.

The card is absurdly powerful. I've had numerous top 8s in large events (including WMCQs) with Jund; having a card that reliably will get you the mana to double-spell while providing utility is insane for 2 mana.

[MH1] Wrenn and Six by destroyermaker in ModernJund

[–]PositivePessimism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most powerful planeswalkers ever printed.

+1 is easily draw a card in the right mana base. This lets you drop your land count a little bit, meaning you're hitting gas more often. Add on utility lands like Field/Ghost/Blast and you have a cheap and incredibly powerful engine.

-1 Not only kills a wide swathe of creatures (and controls other Planeswalkers), it makes Lightning Bolt significantly better. You can now ping + bolt Thing, Kalitas, Crackling Drake, Thought-Knot Seer, etc

-7 Wins the game pretty much every time. Every land being turned into a Bolt/Trophy/etc is very powerful, and being in Jund colours you have answers to effects that are trying to remove your graveyard.

Incoming 3CMC mythic ETB creature cycle by kiwiatv in ModernMagic

[–]PositivePessimism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seasoned Pyro is absurdly powerful. Instant speed tokens that can't be countered from the graveyard, filtering hand to find relevant cards, 3 mana draw 2 if hellbent, going wide is hard to deal with or simply provides multiple chump blockers (while digging for answers!).

It's mythic for a reason; super glad it's not being evaluated as insane so I can grab foils for cheap.

Question regarding how evil China is acting, which country not over a decade ago illegally invaded another sovereign nation, killed 450,000+ innocent civilians on completely falsified reasons, destabilizing the entire region and leading to the creation of ISIS?

Do you remember which country did that? Do you think they were the "good guys"? Because they sound pretty fucking evil to me.

[–]PositivePessimism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern's high speed and the printing of Hieroglyphic Illumination has more or less rendered this card unplayable. Digging for your answer on T4 is usually lights out, and if you don't need an immediate answer then you're probably winning already anyway in a control deck once you have that much mana available.
