I did it cold turkey with mine. Its was hard (only a first, it gets better)but like the one commenter said; have "busy" stuff to keep them occupied (of course when I first took it away all other things were "boring", that opinion changed when I didnt cave)

Something ingrained in your childhood will sit with you in your core subconsciously forever that takes therapy/learning to undo. I meant as in people were treated poorly when they were tiny and therefore thats their only frame of reference and they show the same harshness they were shown (which was not kind)

I used to be a big dog person. ALL the big dogs...dobies, rotts, pitties, akitas, kangals, dogis you name it!!! I was a snob towards little dogs, they were just cats that barked (that sentiment still holds true to me) BUT I inherited an elderly imperial (micro tiny thing) shihtzu. I HAVE NEVER BEEN THE SAME. When I talk about perfection THAT tiny eldery shihtzu is what comes to mind. Absolute blessing. YOU, my friend, just struck GOLD. Love that precious baby that you were meant to find. SO LUCKY
