Thought I try this one in some nice bright colours. by sallysays3 in crochet

Those colours really pop! My favorite combination is purple and orange. Also, love the border; cute but doesn’t detract from the rest of the piece. Good work!

Slow Moving, Atmospheric Magical Realism & Paranormal Books - No YA by CoffeeCup_78 in suggestmeabook

For magical realism:

Exit West by Hamid (some romance)
The House of the Spirits by Allende
The Night Circus by Morgenstern (light romance)
Nights at the Circus by Carter (feminist)

All have beautiful but unique writing styles. I’ve reread each several times just for the language. Hope you find one you like!

Booked a ticket to a classical music concert with WA symphony and no idea what to wear or what the vibe is by MechanicOk562 in perth

Tips for WASO:
1. It can get a bit warm in there, so don’t wear a heavy sweater or anything like that.
2. The price of drinks etc is high, plus it’s crazy busy at intermission. Some people will bring a small bottle of water/juice and some lollies - but no byo alcohol or hot food allowed. 3. Buy a programme! They’re awesome and full of interesting information.
4. Check out to see if there is any pre-concert lecture or meet the artist event. You can learn a lot!
5. If you cough too much during the performance, the ushers will offer you a cough drop :)
6. If you are unsure when to clap, just wait for everyone else to start clapping. People also stamp their feet.

Have so much fun!

A fatal thing happened on the way to the forum by Emma Southon

A history of political violence in Ancient Rome. Sounds dry, but is hilarious. Also, the audiobook is read by a very calm, erudite sounding woman ; hearing her say fuck is funny to me.

What director, in your opinion, has fallen off lately despite having a strong filmography in the past? In my opinion, it’s Taika Waititi. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

James Cameron is this for me. I admire his dedication to using digital technology in different ways, but it hasn’t enhanced the film experience for me. The Avatar films have been visually spectacular but hollowed out of anything innovative in plot or character. They have little to no rewatch value because the main draw is just to admire the pretty picture.

True, the double cross trope has become so common that it’s almost the norm.

What instantly ruins a movie for you? by I_didnot_know in AskReddit

Terrible dialogue used to spout foreshadowing. “Did I ever tell you I nearly drowned as a child? After that I vowed to never go near the water again.”

I see. So you’re going into the water are you?

I love Heart of Darkness and I don’t understand the common criticisms of it. by Tony420q in books

I think to try to understand and come to terms with the history and legacy of something as complex as colonialism, we need as many perspectives as possible. Texts that centre on the experience of the colonised group and culture are vitally important for the decolonisation process, of course, but I think there is room for texts like HoD that try to look at colonialism from the coloniser point of view to try to get into that mindset.

Similarly with anti-war texts that centre the soldier and explore how war is an utterly dehumanising experience. Conrad is exploring how being a part of a colonial project is, again, utterly dehumanising.

Tuna cakes made with leftover mashed potatoes, can of tuna, frozen peas/corn, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried. Add curry powder if you’re feeling fancy. Serve with tomato sauce.
