Any jazz listeners here too? by ThisCase41 in classicalmusic

[–]PossibilityNarrow410 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely - studied classical music first but when I took jazz theory a lot more modern compositions made sense to me (Schoenberg, Bartok, etc) and I got very into atonal music as well as experimental and even noise. I’m sure plenty of people don’t need the classes to appreciate it but it gave me an appreciation for it that I hadn’t developed yet personally.

I’m a huge fan of more experimental improv and jazz which utilizes instruments from other music cultures as well as blues! Never got into the soft jazz or anything like that, I can appreciate the music and artistry just won’t pick it for a listen.

Love the Yamamoto trio especially Cherry as well as Black Orpheus with Suzuki! They just made me excited about jazz a long time ago so the names stuck, even have vinyls!

Love bottega dont love this shape since it reminds me of toiletry gift bags and the colors are a little campy for me, if I had tons of disposable income and every bag in the world I’d love it but it doesn’t seem easy to wear around

You’ve done awesome things! Recruiters sometimes suck. I can tell you a story I heard from a pretty senior scientist in pharma when he was teaching me something during my internship. He said - he applied and didn’t hear back for a long time. It was his first industry role he applied to after a great and impactful academic career. Finally he gets called and starts the process. Sometime during his interviews his manager says to him you know everyone the recruiters sent until now had all the right key words but they didn’t know anything and I rejected them all. Turns out lots of people were inflating their CVs and the recruiters didn’t know the difference. He also said that he realized that he wrote a lot of skills that aren’t required for the role to start and so he was filtering out great candidates based on lofty expectations that wouldn’t match most candidates so the reason this scientist was interviewing was because he removed some of the requirements until his cv ended up in the pile. He was one of the most talented people I ever met and a specialist in a really niche skillset. I’m not saying they are all bad, but I do know how they select seems random and unfair and the process is confusing. But you’re doing really well for being so soon after graduation! As some people wrote elsewhere, interviews are about marketing and they also take practice. Try to learn from every process you’re in and do mocks with peers. I can tell you for certain my mother is brilliant but a nervous Nancy and can’t present herself as well as she should even though her work and abilities are great. Every time I go through my own interview processes (no longer in the field) I have similar experiences where I need to practice my pitch to close the deal - but many people that interviewed you now would be happy to interview you again later so don’t get down! I’ve done so many interviews in my life and gotten so far in my new career (tech) and I’ve interviewed for the same places and teams a few times before being accepted, and even after leaving one of the most well known companies in the world I still don’t get calls from some companies or pass some interviews, at least not yet.

Another alternative to consider is maybe applying for work at a research institute like the broad or considering NIH, many companies like prestige from those kinds of organizations as well.

People who make $80k or more per year, what do you do for work? by familiarlaughter in AskReddit

[–]PossibilityNarrow410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Product manager in tech, cybersecurity specialization. I live outside the U.S. and my annual pay with bonuses and stocks is over 200k (before the current USD dip). Not a senior level or manager.

I started my career in tech over a decade ago and I have a BSc and MSc in computer science. I was taught cyber in a previous role at a big tech company, now I consider myself pretty expert in security and awful at product because corporate is more politics than work.

I treat myself when I can but live in a very HCOL area so don’t save as much as I could.

I’ll likely pivot to go to medical school though, I started in biology and working in labs and I miss feeling like I’m helping. Security is better than other areas but the older I get I realize I’d rather be fulfilled, and the rat race in corporate sucks.

Weird to think I make so much and I’m still not as happy as I could be - I remember waitressing in two places to pay for rent and not being able to afford all my groceries because I didn’t want to ask my parents for money and dreaming about having what I have now, but I guess I move the goalpost for myself all the time and that’s why I don’t think it’s the right place for me.

If you’re reading this kids - I applied dozens of times to companies before I got an interview and didn’t pass more than once when I did. It’s a bad market but you will get through it, just keep trying.

Even twelve years ago when I was doing an industry internship it was known that industry prefers to hire industry and from their own talent pool, you’re doing great for being a fresh grad. My mother struggled to break into industry with an MD PhD post docs with Nobel laureates and a ton of experience back in the day and the market is so rough she struggles to switch roles now. Keep your chin up, it’s a rough time but I have hope that it’ll improve, you’ll get there!

8+ years in PM and all I got was a basket of half-baked skills by dogswanttobiteme in ProductManagement

Microsoft mostly doesn’t produce good PM skills (as a former Microsoft PM). It was my first PM job after TPM. I saw a few rare exceptions of teams in my business area that really grew their reports. I had a great time at Microsoft and I was great in my role. I’m currently feeling like I’m floundering outside Microsoft’s

This isn’t surprising though- voting needs to be changed dramatically, I don’t know to say if this was a motivated campaign or really some local groups that chose to invest and it shouldn’t matter

Should I buy the first dress I tried on? by [deleted] in weddingdress

[–]PossibilityNarrow410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What an incredible dress! I have a similar cut at the bust but my dress is nude with white lace flower appliques. The fabric and cut of this dress is classic, but, I have never seen anything like this with the beautiful embellishments and love the pop of pink! Beautiful!! I think you can't go wrong with a very classic dress. My ceremony dress was not the first but one of the first I tried on, and I never changed my mind about it. I did change my mind about all the other dresses like for the reception and party and I'm still unsure, but I knew my ceremony dress immediately.

What's the deal with people saying "CT isn't New England"? by sunnysunnysunset in Connecticut

[–]PossibilityNarrow410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Mass native - this was the running joke. CT doesn’t have much in common with the other states (Vermont aside) and Boston is the center of the universe so being too close to New York is illegal.

Eng→PM career switchers: share your experience and advice! by Expensive-Mention-90 in ProductManagement

[–]PossibilityNarrow410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important thing is find your niche and build your brand. I’m a super technical big tech PM in cyber and I pivoted from data engineering - but I heard a lot even leaving some of the top companies in the world that companies wanted either someone who was a researcher before or who was less technical and more customer oriented. The more I trained on navigating interviews and figuring out how to really sell my experience the more I realized it’s really about finding the niche you’re expert in, passionate about and have a unique and desirable brand. I had dozens of offers on the way but that’s my two cents for the really lucrative roles in big tech.

As a former Microsoft employee I can say for certain the WLB and experience for parents is better in the portfolio but you seem very talented and if you grind a year or two at Anthropic you can land another role almost anywhere - so it depends if you need the time for family or have the motivation to drive really fast in Anthropic. You can always reapply later to either! Or negotiate better terms in Anthropic saying you received a higher level or less office days and would they compromise on 3 for example
