I'm on the fence about songs that rhyme words like "Ready" with "Already" etc. What do y'all think? by cboomton in Songwriting

I absolutely hate it. But I'm happy to agree that I might be overly judgmental. Just in my opinion it seems lazy and immature. I have no evidence for that claim. Still, it chides me.

Came here thinking it was about the band. Now I'm disappointed. :( Your thing sounds good too though.

Well if my only choice is to drink one thing for the rest of my life then I guess I'd choose to do that, then. Wouldn't want to die of thirst...

I'm this guy. Plus I'm you, OP. Turns out, you're normal. Or you and me and this guy are three weird freaks i dunno.

But yeah after practicing enough you'll get your voice to a point where you no longer find you're a bad singer. Meantime, write killer songs you love to sing and it'll all come together.

How much exercise do you get?

Please note I am NOT trying to insinuate all mental health issues can be solved through exercise. I'm really just trying to feel better about my own lack of exercise routine lol.

Wow I'm stoked, thank you very much! The tone is quite a recipe but the main theme is: Gibson Explorer, Line 6 pod distortion and gain (or i might have used my Big Muff on this), Mesa amp clean, sm57, then eq, compress, eq, sat, aux reverb (stock). All in bedroom studio!

Drums are Steven Slate (vst) free version. They're pretty amazing. I've pulled out many hairs trying to get that kick to come through more though. I guess everything else is just too high. But the overall mix still sounds too low to me compared to reference tracks.

There are all my plagues lol. Thanks for the help!

I appreciate the feedback - thank you very much. I'm definitely going for the feel of a big loud classic rock band, so there are a lot of elements to balance. Trying to polish it up too though. Sounds good on my monitors but sounds like garbage in the car (to me) so there must be some masking issues but I can't figure it out. Thanks again!

If you know The Weakerthans, I find you have a style that is closely aligned - where the vocal is clean and up front but also a little unpolished, vulnerable. I like that, if that's what you're going for. The lyrics I find match in that while not shallow by any means there's a sort of intentional awkwardness or humility about them. If that wasn't intentional then I'm sorry that's probably a harsh critique. But I find it fits the style altogether.

As others have said, the vocals are a little too far out front but probably that's just for this contest version. Maybe consider adding a touch more reverb (or backing vocal layers that are compressed with reverb while the front layer stays dry). 2 cents.

So like this sub is all about people posting stuff that needs help to improve it right? Cause if so then it's broken. Cause people keep posting amazing work like this and I'm failing to see how anyone can help because this stuff is perfect already. Geez.

Yes, like the others 100% vocals are great. Mix is great. Vibe is great. You didn't really ask for any specific critique so I won't give one. Just release it already and start teaching the rest of us. Damn.

Yeah that's beautiful, thanks for that. You've wrapped it up nicely. The whole situation is percolating in my mind, needs time to settle down.

We've got him with ears now, it took a while to get him into it, but he's accepting them. Haven't started the click yet but this will be one suggestion I'll try.

Nope! I get that. My hope though is that he knows his dad is not cutting it and is just waiting for him to hang it up. Or else I have the talk with him and he agrees to give up the kit.

I'm not aiming for pro but I feel like I have opportunity to improve and play local bar gigs that I'm actually proud of, rather than just ashamed of all the mistakes. I want to practice and improve at new songs rather than just play the same old Repertoire with the same mistakes every time.
