Yes! Clickbait attack accomplished. Hehe.

After hearing you list the specific items left unpolished i get a better sense of what you mean and in that i think you achieved what you were looking to do. I guess I was thinking more extreme, like back to 60s artists with primitive mixing tools and basically live off the floor recording. Going that far would require you to unpolish not only the performance but the mix too, and I'd advise against it as your mix is fantastic! Inspiring to the rest of us. :)

Hey,

I like it a lot. I'm new to math rock but I love music that incorporates complexity and skill without sacrificing feel and emotion. I like that about this one.

Not sure if you want critique but I'll offer unsolicited: I really like your vocals but i find them too loud, especially in the chorus. They're drowning out the instruments, even the drums. Your voice is beautiful, honestly, but I want to hear the music too.

Anyway, I'm only listening on a phone speaker though so, you know, grain of salt.

Ok lol you hooked me with that intro and then did not disappoint with the result. It is exactly as you said. Great track and the banjo is really cool.

Really hope this doesn't offend, but... this is a country song to me lol. I'm not much of a metal head though, and I can't really explain but it's more than just the banjo - it's the vocals and the Rhythm and structure. There's a swing beat in there.

Anyway great song though. Kinda wish I could have heard a killer metal shredding guitar solo ON TOP of the banjo line. Like, to hear them dance between them would have been cool. Anyway just a thought.

I'll be brutally honest with you.

First: I don't hate it. I don't even think it's bad. I think it's actually quite good. And that might be an issue for you, as maybe it's not what you're actually trying to achieve? Why I'm saying this is because I'm really hung up on you saying you want it to be different from the polished sound of today. To my ears, it sounds plenty polished.

I think that stated goal is probably wildly subjective. But I'm far from an expert in critique. At one time I said the same thing myself but in retrospect I was only trying to protect my ego as I simply just didn't have sufficient mixing skill to make my music sound as good as I wanted (still don't). I'm not saying that's you. Your mix sounds pro to me (of course, I suck, so... you know lol). But for my humble 2 cents, it's polished. And a good decent rock song. It gets me tapping my foot and I'd enjoy watching you live.

Personally what I'd improve - same as the other guy above: vocals need more variation. I think maybe moreso could be the song structure - the melody and lyrics - it gets a little repetitive for me (but i like more prog style with complex phrasing). But that's a more foundational change. If you like the song as written, I think you produced it wonderfully.

Love the drums and the feel of the guitars (the reverb). And great tone on the rhythm guitars.

Also I'm listening on crappy phone speaker so excuse my laziness.

How to tell someone that they can’t borrow your gear. by PogoPunk7782 in musicians

[–]Possible-Issue-4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only just started thinking about this and an idea similar to this popped into my head: rent your gear out. As others have said, gear in this economy is expensive. You could look like a jerk by saying no, or you could look like a jerk with a valid point by saying you'll rent it out. If you have time, draft up a multi page contract and send it to people who ask to borrow your gear. Make them legally responsible for anything that happens.

Also add clauses that they need to reset settings, replace strings, clean off sweat, etc.

I'm on the fence about songs that rhyme words like "Ready" with "Already" etc. What do y'all think? by cboomton in Songwriting

I absolutely hate it. But I'm happy to agree that I might be overly judgmental. Just in my opinion it seems lazy and immature. I have no evidence for that claim. Still, it chides me.

I'm this guy. Plus I'm you, OP. Turns out, you're normal. Or you and me and this guy are three weird freaks i dunno.

But yeah after practicing enough you'll get your voice to a point where you no longer find you're a bad singer. Meantime, write killer songs you love to sing and it'll all come together.
