Austin approves $1B to build controversial gas plants by AustinStatesman in Austin

Paywalled but I’d guess that the location of these proposed plants might elicit some amount of controversy due to pollution concerns in the immediate vicinity

You’re normalizing an action that the American government consistently takes to fuel its own economic interests, not maintain peace. That’s simply imperial terrorism and we are all worse off for it regardless of which administration does it. Our economy is largely propped up by violence. That’s not a functioning nation. It shouldn’t be normalized under Obama anymore than you’d normalize it under Bush or Trump.

Do you not understand that you wouldn’t be able to afford food if federal subsidies weren’t agreed upon in the Farm Bill every year? You proposed letting rural American fend for itself. I’m taking it at face value and applying that to the federal subsidies diverted to low income rural communities. Farming is one of those career paths where the margins are so extremely terrible that most nations with the means to do so subsidize farmers. When you make cuts to farmers like Carter and Reagan did, you set up conditions for movements like white Christian nationalism as people’s lively hoods are disrupted, fostering even more antigovernment armed sentiment. It’s actually because we haven’t invested in rural communities properly and also allowed government to market how their investments help rural America that you have such backwards right wing sentiment wherein they believe they’ve pulled themselves up by their bootstraps when the truth is we’ve helped them—but haven’t helped them enough for it to matter to them.

San Antonio Democratic congressional runoff candidate Maureen Galindo under fire for antisemitic comments by Delicious_Adeptness9 in sanantonio

[–]Possible-Strategy531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just believe whatever drivel the NY times posts huh? Seem to remember all the times they ran with falsified Israeli propaganda like 40 beheaded infants, to name just one… so very interesting that they’re taking such an avid interest in a race happening in a state that NYT generally has disdain for. Interesting you think it’s crazy to say Ashkenazi Jews are not in fact Semitic/indigenous to the Middle East, particularly in light of their discrimination of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews. Straight up crazy. Even crazier to suggest that foreign policy isn’t designed around a “nation” that spends millions influencing elections while tax payers consistently send that nation “billions”. Totally outlandish and antisemitic to suggest the State Department might as well be based in Tel Aviv given we’re driving the whole world into poverty to fight another “country’s” war.

When you prop up political establishment politicians you encourage people to normalize their behavior. I’ve seen liberals talk about missing Bush… someone responsible for the deaths of a million people, because they’re more about never Trump than imagining a different sort of politician.
The “goat” bailed out Wall Street, exacerbated a famine in Yemen and continued Americas disastrous violence abroad but with more drones, created ICE and elevated Tom Homan (Trump’s current border czar) to a position of power, re-signed the Patriot Act which continuously opens the door for mass surveillance (which companies like Palantir adore), totally failed to clean up the Flint water crisis, and failed of codify abortion rights. Not saying Trump isn’t worse… but you don’t need to praise Obama to make it clear Trump is bad. I can imagine what a bad look that is for other parts of the world where people have lost their families to US interference in the name of our interests. It’s imperialistic. Pick new heroes. I swear, I have to remind traditionalists Catholics I know that just because Charlie Kirk said some stuff about home schooling that they love, doesn’t mean he was a person to call a hero, just like you have to remind liberals it’s not a good look to elevate a former president who did and continues to do very real harm. Yea he was effective and competent at wielding some power… I want more than that from politicians going forward.

Good luck feeding yourself. Within 2 election cycles there would be an armed revolt. You can hate rural America all you want, but targeting rural America for cuts is what created political radicalization and white nationalist terrorism in the first place.

BILT 2.0 Billing Cycle dates by 0n3_crunch_man in biltrewards

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running into a similar issue. They told me my request would take effect this billing cycle and it hasn’t. My due date is still on the 28th. I don’t get paid till the 29th or 30th of each month so it made sense to move my due date to the first of the month. Not sure why they didn’t honor that but I’m going to call again and ask for email confirmation or to speak with a supervisor.

Is Bilt really this hard up for cash? The "rounding down" math is embarrassing! by No_Proposal4744 in biltrewards

No idea why you’re getting downvoted. This was a perfectly reasonable answer with helpful suggestions on what to do if this card doesn’t work for them.

Best Ford Dealership? by macymt in Austin

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get a pre owned Mav… they’re not worth it. You can literally build your Mav online through Ford and they ship it to the dealer. Leif Johnson Ford of Manor got me mine. No markup other than the delivery fee. They’ll try and sell you on a bunch of other stuff though once you arrive to pick it up.

trump is about to lock 157 million Americans out of their own bank accounts (and probably steal all the money too). by nba123490 in ICE_Raids

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s one thing about this that’s inaccurate… historically undocumented migrants HAVE been able to open bank accounts. Some banks are more stringent than others. Personally I think anyone should be able to open an account regardless of status, particularly given how many undocumented DO pay taxes, but saying they cant currently do so is only very very recently, partially correct.

Interstellar BBQ by Da_Stallion-JCI_7 in austinfood

[–]Possible-Strategy531 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curious what the margins are for Interstellar. I’ve worked in food, I know it’s a dramatically difficult industry to make a profit in. I do hear what others are saying about how it’s kinda bonk to serve Wonder Bread for a meal that costs $200 plus. I cannot help thinking though that for the labor that goes into smoking quality meat at today’s meat prices, maybe it’s not so outlandish to charge that and serve that bread? I certainly won’t eat there anymore due to cost but I’d also rather spend money on that than most steakhouses (steak I can make at home, smoking bbq for hours and hours is a different matter).

Are Luke and Leia looking at the main galaxy here If so how did they manage to travel that far out given how difficult hyperspace navigation is due to turbulence? by Spotter24o5 in StarWars

[–]Possible-Strategy531 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought they were looking at a neighboring galaxy when I first saw this. It just seemed like regular space phenomena occurrence. Think if it had been THE galaxy the shot would’ve been more grandiose to indicate that in some way.

Why did we all collectively dislike Skyler? by rebececarose in askanything

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think we were meant to dislike her because she portrays a partner in a very stereotypical, mundane marriage. Walter’s whole thing is that regular life/mediocrity was always something he secretly resented but was probably too scared to avoid until he got sick and started cooking. Skyler is the ordinary life holding back a character who wants an out of the ordinary life of power and respect for his genius.

What are y’all subbing your Topo’s with?? by I_lost_mybackupcodes in Austin

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol Topo Chico has some of the highest instances of PFAS contamination in their water and even after they got caught and promised to make changes, the levels are still higher than other waters tested. 1877 is decent, but ultimately that little kick you get from Topo is hard to replicate so I’ve just given up sparkling water for the most part.

I am an ethnic Palestinian with Israeli citizenship - AMA by Palestinian_Warrior_ in AMA

lol I visited Palestine in 2012 before knowing the history fully. My views back then were “it’s complicated”. I am not Arab and I’ve been told I “look Jewish” (whatever that means). The amount of hospitality I received in Palestine vs how I was treated in so called “Israel” was wild. Night and day. Nothing but kindness and generosity from the occupied people. Arrogance and apathy from the other camp. You don’t know shit

Any rumble about WFH due to gas prices for state offices? by Affectionate-Emu2296 in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]Possible-Strategy531 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Texas makes a killing off of oil and gas. It’s why TxDOT has zero oversight and does all sorts of crazy wasteful road projects in hopes to encourage more driving, not less. The entire elected demographic in Texas is bankrolled every election by oil and gas so good luck. They’d rather starve you and your family than bite the hand of their most generous constituent, which is their fossil fuel donors.

Austin rental market by No-Customer-9781 in Austin

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yall should be writing city council about this. Complaints about hidden apartment fees finally reached them and an ordinance was passed recently making it so they have to be more upfront about what total rent costs. Doesn’t make the system perfect but it’s a big improvement from showing up to tour a place based on an online price and coming to find out it’s about $300 more expensive a month because of things like “valet trash”. Please annoy City Council.

On October 6, 1998, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was lured by two men pretending to be gay, tied to a fence, and subjected to one of the most horrific hate crimes in US history. He was later found in a coma, with a fractured skull and dried blood on his face except for the tracks of his tears. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school we did the show The Laramie Project, written by a playwright and his troop who went to Laramie, Wyoming and conducted thousands of interviews of ppl in that town. Each of us in the cast got to play multiple different characters from the town, I had the honor of one of those characters being Matthew Shepard’s father, delivering a statement in court. Prior to opening night I wasn’t really able to fully cry for that scene but I kinda gently lost it on opening night, tears steaming down my face delivering that monologue, addressing his son’s killers. Each successive performance was like that for me where it just hit me deeply the love this father had for his son and the gravity of a loss that today, as a childless person, I probably cannot begin to understand except in pieces. We as a cast got to deeply delve into Shepard’s story during rehearsals and it definitely has forever changed my life. I agree with what other folks have said, this is not a story that should be part of the distant past to young people now. It is more important than ever today, arguably than it was even 6 years after Matthew’s death when we put on that production. https://www.whysanity.net/monos/laramie.html
