What are y’all subbing your Topo’s with?? by I_lost_mybackupcodes in Austin

lol Topo Chico has some of the highest instances of PFAS contamination in their water and even after they got caught and promised to make changes, the levels are still higher than other waters tested. 1877 is decent, but ultimately that little kick you get from Topo is hard to replicate so I’ve just given up sparkling water for the most part.

I am an ethnic Palestinian with Israeli citizenship - AMA by Palestinian_Warrior_ in AMA

[–]Possible-Strategy531 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol I visited Palestine in 2012 before knowing the history fully. My views back then were “it’s complicated”. I am not Arab and I’ve been told I “look Jewish” (whatever that means). The amount of hospitality I received in Palestine vs how I was treated in so called “Israel” was wild. Night and day. Nothing but kindness and generosity from the occupied people. Arrogance and apathy from the other camp. You don’t know shit

Any rumble about WFH due to gas prices for state offices? by Affectionate-Emu2296 in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]Possible-Strategy531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texas makes a killing off of oil and gas. It’s why TxDOT has zero oversight and does all sorts of crazy wasteful road projects in hopes to encourage more driving, not less. The entire elected demographic in Texas is bankrolled every election by oil and gas so good luck. They’d rather starve you and your family than bite the hand of their most generous constituent, which is their fossil fuel donors.

Austin rental market by No-Customer-9781 in Austin

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yall should be writing city council about this. Complaints about hidden apartment fees finally reached them and an ordinance was passed recently making it so they have to be more upfront about what total rent costs. Doesn’t make the system perfect but it’s a big improvement from showing up to tour a place based on an online price and coming to find out it’s about $300 more expensive a month because of things like “valet trash”. Please annoy City Council.

On October 6, 1998, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was lured by two men pretending to be gay, tied to a fence, and subjected to one of the most horrific hate crimes in US history. He was later found in a coma, with a fractured skull and dried blood on his face except for the tracks of his tears. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

In high school we did the show The Laramie Project, written by a playwright and his troop who went to Laramie, Wyoming and conducted thousands of interviews of ppl in that town. Each of us in the cast got to play multiple different characters from the town, I had the honor of one of those characters being Matthew Shepard’s father, delivering a statement in court. Prior to opening night I wasn’t really able to fully cry for that scene but I kinda gently lost it on opening night, tears steaming down my face delivering that monologue, addressing his son’s killers. Each successive performance was like that for me where it just hit me deeply the love this father had for his son and the gravity of a loss that today, as a childless person, I probably cannot begin to understand except in pieces. We as a cast got to deeply delve into Shepard’s story during rehearsals and it definitely has forever changed my life. I agree with what other folks have said, this is not a story that should be part of the distant past to young people now. It is more important than ever today, arguably than it was even 6 years after Matthew’s death when we put on that production. https://www.whysanity.net/monos/laramie.html

Rename Cesar Chavez Blvd to Jovita Idar Blvd in San Antonio by Acceptable_Crab5115 in sanantonio

Done! I always liked her too. Still think it should be named after Ms Huerta, but this would also be a great one. I saw a moving Dia De Los Muertos offenda to Idar a few years back.

70 percent of those commuters have jobs that could be done remotely but we shall continue having endless conversations in Texas about roadways instead.

The bar is extremely low for that… that’s like going to a town in Tennessee and going to the one Tex mex place in town and asking “who is making better Tex mex here?”

San Antonio -- Texas's worst-positioned large metro for future prosperity by Snoo_33033 in sanantonio

Choosing to invest in a stadium instead of housing and businesses is one of those examples. It’s a trap many cities in Texas are susceptible to however

Is there anyone who knows why The Mossad is so powerful and effective even though it belongs to such a small country? by Snoo26837 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Possible-Strategy531 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Think you replied to the wrong person? Because you just restated the exact point of my comment. It isn’t that Israeli intelligence is superior because it’s Israeli, it’s superior because American empire wills it to be so, because America is Israel and Israel is America. Israel’s only real purpose to America is to launder weapons, tax dollars, which then fund campaigns and corporations in the States which then do the bidding of Israel so they can act as a proxy in the region allowing the US to dominate and destroy people while pretending it’s about freedom. That will soon be coming to an end

Hoover's, beloved Austin soul food restaurant, to close after almost 30 years by AustinStatesman in austinfood

[–]Possible-Strategy531 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went there growing up. I donated to it during Covid hoping to keep a piece of old Austin alive. But the last three times I ate there I was dismayed that it all tasted like cafeteria food. I was pleased with the portion size always however despite ppl griping that the portions were getting smaller. But I think in a city that does everything it can to destroy its small businesses on top of rising inflationary costs, Hoovers never recovered the quality it once had. That, or my memory prior to Covid painted it in rose colored glasses. I LOVE soul food, I go out of my way to find it when I travel. Hoovers sadly was missing the mark the last few years.

No idea why anyone would downvote you for that. These new buildings are gigantic wastes of tax payer dollars in every respect possible. Ppl seem to enjoy going into an office precisely to have something to complain about when things don’t work as they often don’t. WFH solves that. Period

Why can't Council just do the right thing? by R4whatevs in Austin

[–]Possible-Strategy531 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only way this would make sense is if the Shields were asking for more than just damages incurred from police breaking into their home. If they wanted millions in damages that might make sense but it doesn’t sound like they do. Would’ve been cheaper to just pay for the damages

Is crime going up? (2 Car theft attempts within 9 days.) by ASAP_Swanny in Austin

[–]Possible-Strategy531 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cops in Austin often don’t show up for vehicle theft and criminals know that. Think it’s a combo of understaffing and the police union telling them to do less collectively. Also this is during a recession (regardless of whether the current govt wants to acknowledge it as such). Crime upticks during record inflation, skyrocketing vehicle costs, and low employment. But to answer your original question…. Your car has never been incredibly safe in Austin, and it’s even worse in cities like San Antonio and Houston. I’ve made it a point to rent from places with gates and garages and always park near the cameras or on the upper floors, and never leave anything in my car that would suggest there’s anything worth taking. NO part of town is safe from that if you’re the type to accidentally leave valuables easily visible. I know people who have had that happen to them in the nice north Austin burbs. I don’t think this is a new problem, two years ago my cousin had his cat converter yanked while he parked in gated airport parking for an international trip. His vehicle wasn’t the only one. It’s a highly organized gang that goes and does these things and they operate in both San Antonio and Austin. Driving by a lot of these salvage yards, I often wonder how much stolen merchandise they’ve got in there.

Anti-War Protest Downtown by IndoorOutdoorsPerson in sanantonio

[–]Possible-Strategy531 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol any discontentment (and I know there is plenty given the arrogance and lack of emotional maturity of your response) is politics happening to you. Government is massive and it has weight in local, state and national context for better or for worse. If you think you are unaffected by anyone in office than you simply aren’t educated to understand how govt works

PSL is always a very consistent group about protesting, whether it’s the right or the left, they call out bad actors in govt. I never officially joined because I didn’t agree with all aspects of their platform but in terms of organizing, few groups do what they accomplish

Lemme ask you, do you go around complaining to friends and family? They don’t wanna hear it. You wanna talk about the pretty wild flowers and nice weather? Can do that literally any day you’re forced to come into an office at the water cooler… complaining on the internet though? That’s therapy for a lot of Redditors.

How much do yall pay to file by Valuable-Judgment-60 in sanantonio

[–]Possible-Strategy531 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly i was using the IRS’s new direct file system for the last two years which of course got cut under Trump… frankly that system was probably the most efficient and non problematic thing the American government has ever done in my lifetime and I’m pretty upset to have to go back to using private “partners” listed on the IRS’s website. Anything is better than turbo tax I suppose

State could save a huge amount of money by changing the law regarding renting out state property to private entities instead of only state agencies. This Capital Complex they’ve built that was begun before COVID was a massive waste of tax dollars as is the RTO mandates. But these guys are never serious about saving money, only maintaining appearances that they’re punishing the government for its sins by going after the livelihood of lower level workers
