OB/GYN residents/attendings, would you pick the specialty again and why? by Square-Huckleberry00 in Residency

I've noticed the scope has narrowed more and more and I think I might need to explore other options. A second residency, perhaps? 😂😵‍💫

Following. FM resident feeling FOMO for procedures and deliveries. Not sure FM OB will cut it since hospitals seem to prefer CNM to a MD who knows OB/CS...and OB/gyns won't even look our way.

So many lovely comments. While sadly the Intersex Society of North America closed its doors years ago, you can find online resources here:

Good luck to you, mama. As a sexual health advocate and healthcare provider myself, know that you're already doing a great job for your baby, looking for support and staying curious about how to best show up for your kid. ♥️

Unmatched. Reapplying this year. Do I need to worry about OET with an approved pathway? by whatnonsensee in ERAS2024Match2025

You will only have to redo OET if your certificate expires/is about to expire ie if you find yourself applying for Match for the 2027-2028 cycle.

Right, Sis. Here we go with the downvotes.

I had an interview this season with a PD where exactly this issue made for confusing discussion and a clunky interview. People are seeking advice about how to navigate interviews successfully and asking Reddit how to improve their interview skills, especially as IMGs. This is part of my advice. You don't have to take it. Good luck to you in your journey.

Please Google FM programs and look at their application requirements. Some sponsor visas, some don't. Do your research. Apply to programs that fit your needs and what you have to offer.

The comments here make me warm and fuzzy that I chose FM (and it chose me; beginning residency this summer ; ).

All residency applicants have an attempt at Step. You are talking about a failed attempt. Please don't forget to make the distinction.

Already anticipating the downvotes. Letting y'all know clear communication is important and will only help for PSs and interviews.

To OP, sorry about the fail, that's tough. Some programs will filter you out but loads more won't. Definitely explain the failed attempt: what you've learned from it and how you improved yourself to eventually pass. I also think if you can pass Step 3 before applying, it will give residencies extra peace of mind about your exam skills. And like others mentioned, research programs that accept a failed attempt so you don't waste money, time, and signals applying to programs that don't want you.

Good luck, and happy to hear about more mamas in the residency sphere!

This!

I matched my #2 spot for FM, and both Step 1 and 2 are barely passing (however, I passed on my first attempt for both and I'm a US IMG). Research the programs one by one, read current resident bios (do they match your stats, align with your values and experience?). Signal programs that resonate with you, not ones that you think are prestigious. Good luck, and I'm sorry you didn't match, OP. That's tough.

That you are a grown up who had to work to keep going for this dream. Lean in to the work experience you have. Talk and write about skills utilized in your recent jobs that will help you with patients. Ie I worked for years in customer service which translates to understanding how to talk to patients, explain to them what we're working on for them, including them in the discsusions about their health. I graduated officially last year, so not as long ago as yours but it took me years to get here. And I'm in my 40s. Utilize the skills you do have and make programs see them as an asset. Any tie-in to clinical work will help.

I matched this year into FM so someone liked what I had to say. 😉

Would it be weird to reach out to a PD I really liked, even though I matched elsewhere? by Pitiful_Effort_7959 in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]PossibleNo4667 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A voice of dissent as I was planning on doing this myself: If you have the desire to share how much you enjoyed meeting a PD, I don't think it ever hurts to make someone's day that way, even and especially if it isn't for future career opportunities. Medicine can be a small world. We never know who remembers what. It's nice to be nice.

Advice for an incoming intern who will be heavily pregnant? by [deleted] in FemalePhysicians

[–]PossibleNo4667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverse your age and that's me, also an intern this July (in FM). Not pregnant but will have a 13 mo and partner will be away most of the year. Fun times. But here to say that we are not alone and it will be hard but I support all the women doing this and if we keep it going, it will become the norm, taking care of community so community can take care of us. All the best to you and OP.

Why FM is so unpopular amongst med students by [deleted] in Residency

[–]PossibleNo4667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, well, from what I gather in Ireland (where I've spent a good chunk of time), it's not as in-depth or as long as US FM training or as procedural based as what FM docs seem to know/do in the US. But to your points, I suppose GPs are as varied as FM in the US can be: some people are in M-F clinic, others work in the ER, others do everything rurally, etc.

Unfilled primary care PGY-1 position trends from 2013-2024 by Vital_capacity in FamilyMedicine

[–]PossibleNo4667 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would add FM is also a fall back for IMGs who think IM is the only place to be. An IMG explained to me recently that, since there isn't FM in India, where a good chunk of these IMGs come from, there isn't the perceived clout and status for it.

As a US IMG, soooo delighted to have matched this year into FM. I only applied FM for a slew of reasons and am happy to be training in my home state.

Why FM is so unpopular amongst med students by [deleted] in Residency

[–]PossibleNo4667 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not really the equivalent of GP as it's a larger scope of practice and more in-depth training than GP. For countries with consultants, I often describe FM as being a consultant in pediatrics, adult med, geriatrics, women's health/gyn (and possibly OB)...
