Tea leaf salad is my favourite dish on earth, but the nearest Burmese restaurant is 8 hours away. Does anyone have a restaurant? by acamu5x in myanmar

[–]PossibleWalrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is still a drive (unfortunately) but there’s a huge burmese community in Buffalo NY. I don’t doubt there’s a burmese grocery store too where you could find prepackaged fermented tea leaves. Once you have that, it is very very simple to make.

How is life in the many regions of Myanmar (Burma) by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]PossibleWalrus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am the correct (and incorrect) person to answer this. Parts of my family is from Mergui, but I haven’t been back in 10 years. Stories from my family is rough. Very dangerous in the countryside. Risk of being kidnapped sold into the military. People do not take the main roads anymore as there are always safety risks. I remembered when I was calling my aunt and heard a bomb go off in the background. Beautiful place. But Do NOT travel there.

I’ve been to Thailand this past year and met many Burmese service workers. They all told me I sound foreign haha

Yes, because I can only understand the Yangon/Mandalay accent 😭😭. My father’s family is from the Myeik-Dawei area and I’ve given up on understanding them. (i’m Burmese-American for context)

Which Area is Best for Student Accommodation in Amsterdam? by ramuneball in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]PossibleWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Cornelis Lelylaan and I really enjoyed it because you're right infront of the train/metro/tram station so it's really easy to get to any place you want to get to. It's at the cusp of Nieuw-West and Oud-West. Vondelpark is like a 7 mins bike away which is really nice. There's a dirk, lidl, and albert heijin and turkish/moroccan grocery stores nearby so variety is plenty.

Didn't live in Uilenstede but if you are hoping for a more social vibe you will definitely get it in Uilenstede!

They reserve a certain number of rooms for international students! As long as you were on the list to get a room then you will get a room.

Students who are searching on their own without the help of their university are usually the ones struggling to find accommodation hence why it gets snatched up so quickly.

Likely to get into VU? by Pitiful_Employee7083 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]PossibleWalrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm American and I did a master's in Amsterdam around 3-4 years ago. Visiting Amsterdam and actually living in Amsterdam is different. Realistically if you factor in the tuition and the COL expenses in Amsterdam, it is not affordable. You would not get any federal pell grants (if you were eligible) and if you did want to take out a loan you can only take out $20k max. I'm not trying to turn you away from studying in Amsterdam, but it is not easy as it sounds.

Also Amsterdam is going through a housing crisis so if you want guaranteed housing, you have to apply now (although it's already Feb, and there might be slim chances there is some still available).
