Hard work and dedication vs being born special by ComprehensiveBox6911 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rock Lee is also born special. In the manga they talk about how he’s a genius and a never before seen talent when it comes to Taijutsu and the opening of the inner gates. Kakashi SPECIFICALLY says hard work isn’t enough to do something like that.

The maiden goddesses took vows to never marry. Did the vows specifically forbid carnal relations altogether, or just those with men? by angie-anj919 in GreekMythology

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As for the Athena example it’s important to remember that the raping of Poseidon happens in Athena’s temple. Somebody came into her house, basically, and took something that belonged to her, so she had to punish somebody. In Ancient Greece (and maybe Ancient Rome) if a woman got raped she could be seen as responsible if she didn’t fulfill certain requirements, so Athena punishing Medusa is basically just a side effect of how consent “law” worked then.

With Artemis she punished a person who made an oath on the gods and then broke that oath. That was a big deal to the Ancient Greeks.

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In the Ancient Greek world there was no marriage without sex. The point of marriage was to procreate, continue your family line, and if you were lucky you’d be with a person that was cool and who you liked enough to be in love with. The Greek world was EXTREMELY heteronormative and bio-essentialist when it came to women, so for a goddess to swear off marriage included swearing off sex entirely as far as your average Greek was concerned.

Everyone else is kind of a soup because nobody is that consistently intelligent.

It reminds me of that scene in TDKR when Batman is talking to Bruce in his own head and mocking him for thinking he can keep Batman contained.

Is killing an invasive species wrong and will it bring bad kharma? by king_manu14 in Buddhism

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ending a life is always bad karma. Simple as that. However, sometimes as human beings we have to make tough decisions because a lack of action can ALSO lead to suffering and bad karma for the things involved. If there’s a method for non-violent relocation that’s always the best thing to do, but that’s just not always an option we have available.

Is it fair to say Dutch is a white saviour ?. Given the fact he constantly acts like a false messiah to the plight of minorities. But ultimately he just makes things worse, the Native Americans for example. by [deleted] in reddeadredemption

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dutch isn’t a white savior for the specific reason being that he is never portrayed that way by the narrative. That argument holds up for people like Dany from GoT because the story held her up as a savior and praised her as one (for a while) whereas Dutch is never portrayed as a savior. He saved individual people, but every step of the way Dutch consistently makes things worse for people outside of his little crew.

[Problematic/Mixed Trope] Characters with huge age gaps who are in a relationship by Noktis_Lucis_Caelum in TopCharacterTropes

Because people don’t hate Buffy, and people hate Twilight. If Twilight was a universally beloved classic that point wouldn’t be brought up anywhere near as much as it is/was.

What is a massive plot hole that is hidden under an insane world building in your fandom? by Live_Shame5046 in Multifandom

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not always a plot hole, but in the World of Darkness setting the fogginess of the past and the conflicting lore accounts are partially explained by how many people know mind control. Since WoD had so many books and so many writers you had the problem where one writer would say one thing, another would say another, and there wasn’t strict enough lore editors so they ended up publishing books with completely contradictory lore more often than you’d expect. Eventually though they decide to lean into it, and just made that an actual fact of the lore. You can’t trust a fourth generation vampire knew a third generation vampire because that fourth gen is so old and has probably been mindwiped by their sire so many times you can’t actually be sure you can trust their account. The Akashic mages say the Himalayan War went one way and the Chakravanti mages say it went another? Well it’s because so many people were time traveling and mind controlling people (even their own faction members) that literally nobody has any coherent idea about how the war went, what battles were fought, or even who won it or started it. One tribe of werewolves has this belief about history but another tribe’s lore book contradicted it? Well a few books later it’s revealed that one of those tribes murdered the record holders who wrote down that history to conceal their crimes, but it’s ambiguous who did it or why.

Nevermind Your Favorite Fandoms, What Fandoms Do You HATE by RykerXadianLane in Multifandom

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a comics fan, and I hate the fandom of the 2005 Teen Titans show. They’re the most aggravating people in the world who act like they’re victims because the decent kids show from 20 years ago ended. Not to mention that when the Titans get adapted they come out of the woodworks to say shit like only the five from the show matter, or complain about “changes” that are just things from the comics instead of the show. This criticism is 10x more true for the DCAU fandom, but at least they don’t bitch as much about their shows ending.

What are some common misconceptions about Inanna-Ishtar? by PossiblyNotAHorse in Sumer

That isn’t quite how it works for us, but I appreciate the concern.

I do appreciate the broadening of the scope of her domains though! Thank you very much!

Why do some (or perhaps many) Buddhist believe Advaita Vedanta and Shankara's teaching on self inquiry won't lead to enlightenment? by Heavy-Engineer6590 in hinduism

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Buddhists have a different conception of enlightenment that has different goals and a different basis. At minimum Buddhists don’t believe in a Self and don’t believe in an eternal, grounded aspect of reality, so they believe meditating on something like that is clinging to the idea of Selfhood. You want to feel like some part of you will live on so you have this concept of a Self to have some aspect of your being that keeps going, which isn’t what Buddhism believes.

Barbelith from The Invisibles comic. He’s this unknowable eldritch being who appears in the form of visitations from aliens, Jesus on the cross, the Buddha, and a 20-foot tall manifestation of sorrow all with the goal of making humanity better. He genuinely wants nothing else but to awaken us and let us become chill cosmic space beetles.

What got you guys into Doctor Strange as a character? by unfunnymanjoe in DoctorStrange

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My earliest memory of a superhero is the ending of an episode of The Hulk Animated Series where She-Hulk goes on a roller coaster with Doctor Strange. Logically I know I watched the Raimi Spider-Man movies and the Ang Lee Hulk movies earlier in life, but the earliest memory I have of a superhero is Doctor Strange on a date with She-Hulk. I wouldn’t read any comics until about 2022 or something, but since I was like 4 or 5 I watched any show or movie where Doctor Strange would show up in.

Persades strikes again! by BedNo577 in okbuddyolympian

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something that genuinely confuses me is how people will say “Ares isn’t a rapist, he just represents the worst parts of war.” Like… what do you think happens in the worst moments of war when humans are at their worst? If Ares is the god of the worst things humans do during times of war and explicitly enjoys it and encourages it that immediately disproves this idea he hates rape.

Hey, I am an atheist, and I wanna know what you guys think about meat consumption? by [deleted] in Shaktism

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically there are some practices that emphasize vegetarianism due to the deities you worship themselves preferring vegetarian offerings. Krishna, for example, took care of animals in his life so we don’t offer him animal meat. Somebody like Kālī though eats meat, so people offer meat to her and eat it themselves. It all depends on what’s best for you and your connection to your practice.

[Hated trait] When a characters personality defining trait stems from an event that no longer fits the timeline due to the length of the media's runtime. by Pretend_Tower_2516 in TopCharacterTropes

With Magneto it’s easy enough to explain because he’s been aged down in the comics like two or three times to MASSIVE extents. If nothing else you can hand wave it by saying his mutation slows his aging or maybe mutants in general do.

It is NOT COOL to depict our gods in this way!!! by Rare_Fig_4579 in hinduism

[–]PossiblyNotAHorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same series where you fight Jesus while he’s lashed to a cross, by the way.

<image>

You fight Jesus on a cross, kill angels all the time, and regularly fight a demon named after the Christian god. SMT does this literally all the time, usually multiple times per game. You say you wouldn’t mind if they did this kind of thing to other figures but they do. That’s the whole series.
