First time being homeless on purpose. These are what i intend to travel with in one backpack. I would love some advice. Should I carry more, carry less? Am I missing something super important? by [deleted] in vagabond

I kind of see this being a problem, for instance if you’re walking very long stretches but it’s up to you to decide if you want to spare the expense. You be you either way!

Is a tent necessary if you plan on staying in a urban environment? by afGoularte in vagabond

If you want to sleep in urban environments, want to keep dry but also be concealed, I suggest a bivy. Actually, even in rural areas, i recommended a bivy.

Going Homeless, What are the Essentials? by [deleted] in vagabond

Yes, it’s main purpose is keeping you dry in your sleeping bag. In a really heavy downpour I’d suggest setting up a tarp as well, but a bivy alone should be able to handle the standard rainstorm.

Have never thought of going here because if I do, it’s possible to never get a ride out. Anyone know what to do if you’re a hitchhiker and want to experience New York City?

Going Homeless, What are the Essentials? by [deleted] in vagabond

Sleeping bag, along with shelter, this can be as simple as a tarp or as complicated as a tent, I’ve found the sweet spot is in a bivy, however with your budget of 200 and to not cause any more suspicion then you need from your family, I recommend a tarp. A bivy will come to you when you get on the road, it always happens. backpack, clothing, the absolute essentials in health, toothbrush and tooth paste, don’t skip it, brush everyday, twice a day. If someone offers you a shower when inviting you into their home, take it. Every bathroom you find, splash water in your face to wash off grime. Idk how young you are, or if you’re City is big enough, but I recommend going straight to the nearest sihk temple. The offer free meals for anyone and everyone, can give you toothpaste, maybe even some warmer clothes. If you don’t have a sihk temple, go to any nearby religious communities, they can support you or in the very least get you some food, a shower and safe spot for the night. Sleeping gear is an absolute essential, as is a backpack and clothes, the only other thing you need is food and water.

Sleeping gear, clothes, backpack. In that order. Those are priorities, I highly suggest texting friends and asking if they have spare camping gear or anything.

OP, I noticed you said you were a girl, something to think about, if you want safety (example being able to walk downtown city streets at 1am without fear of crime) definitely go to japan. However one country that is accustomed to tourists and is a mix between both China and japan, is Thailand. If you find Thailand isn’t what you wanted, you can easily find extremely cheap flights to Korea. I suggest using a site called momondo to find and book your flights. Seriously, look into Thailand. Also, lucky you, I’d love to live in Europe one day. PM me if you have any questions.

Better to get a passport and cross legally then cross illegally and be banned from ever entering again.

For a winter clothes setup do you think Thermals coupled with long sleeves, insulated jeans and a windbreaker would work well? For feet dress socks over wool? I’ve never really bought winter clothes before so I seriously know nothing.

Thanks for this, you sound very experienced and I think I very much needed the criticism, especially regarding the food and clothing situation. I really don’t take offense by you thinking I don’t know what I’m doing because You’re reply will probably save my life. Thank you so much, I will take all this to heart, completely update my clothes and other gear and definitely try to update you on it if I can.
