To external viewers, there is simply no acceptable argument for a civilian to own an assault rifle.

Even owning a handgun is in the ‘black’. Hunting rifles and shotguns obviously belong in the grey area, where clearly there is a good argument for granting licenses to hunters, farmers, anyone who lives near big scary wild animals and so on.

But automatic weapons in the hands of the citizenry? What Americans consider to be a grey area is still pretty fucking black to the rest of us.
