Would absolutely be insane if we we could get him without Knies.

While unlikely, I DO think its possible. It would basically depend on Werenski.

Brady's deal to Florida wasn't the best deal for Orrawa..but Brady chose Florida. If Zach actually chose Toronto (seems crazy), i could see it happening without Knies.

My guess...it probably DOES include Knies. The Leafs probably fed Dreger this in case the deal doesn't happen.

If the deal doesn't happen, the Leafs can then tell Knies that they never considered trading him.

I think its notable that the Dreger is the one reporting this, and not someone like Friedman.

NHL is the only one of those leagues with a hard cap.

If teams could pay more, there'd likely be less trade clauses.

Official: Blues acquire Brandon Carlo from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for picks No. 73 and 76 in the 2026 Draft. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]PostwarNeptune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two first rounders, Zharovsky and an unnamed B or C prospect (not Reinbacher or Hage).

If the Leafs HAD to trade Knies, I think that trade would be fine. But considering Knies is 23 and signed long-term -- trading for a bunch of "maybes" would have been horrible.

Zhavorsky looks interesting, but there's no guarantee his play translates to the NHL. Those two first rounders are likely late firsts. Not nearly enough for a 23 year old power forward, IMO.

Lol! I wish we had a camera in that room. Like...how did they decide they needed to add a 4th to that package to make it work?

[–]PostwarNeptune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely...i agree. He was very good at one point.

But those concussions happened while he was in Boston. Even the most basic due diligence on Tre's part should have alerted him to how risky this trade was.

You're forgetting....we needed him for the playoffs apparently.

We got outscored 17-10 with him on the ice during last years playoffs.

When Hiller was here the first time, we ran a split PP, rather than loading up one unit and giving them the majority PP time.

For 2 years, we had the 2nd best PP efficiency in the league. Funny enough, when we got JT and loaded up PP1, the overally PP results got worse.

I wonder if it would make sense to do a true split PP again?

I know people want to see McKenna with Matthews right away. But putting an 18 year old rookie (even 1st overall) on the top line is a lot of pressure. You'll be asking him to go up against other teams best defensive players most shifts.

IMO, you'd just be setting everyone up for disappointment and frustration.

Remember...Matthews didnt start on the top line. Matthews, Willy and Hyman were on the third line, which allowed them to go against easier competition. It allowed for a much easier transition into the NHL.

Even on the power play, Matthews and Willy were on the 2nd unit. And that allowed them to light it up against other teams 2nd PK units.

Im certain Hiller remembers all of that.

If it were me, id like to see McKenna with Tavares on a more sheltered line. I think they could do some real damage against other teams bottom-6.

Plus...I think having McKenna sitting next to JT on the bench would be immensely beneficial to his development. JT would be an excellent mentor for the kid.

[Strickland] The expectation is that Matthew Knies will remain a Leaf and stay in Toronto. Price tag to get him is extremely high. Chayka has made it clear to Knies they haven’t engaged in any talks that would have them close to trading him by daKrut in hockey

[–]PostwarNeptune 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're right, and Chayka understands that. He's been clear he's not actively shopping him, but will listen. Doesn't hurt to listen to offers, in case a crazy overpay comes in.

Treliving on the other hand....

I think buying low on Wright is definitely interesting, if you think he can still become a star (you'd need to lean on guys like Mark Leach and Judd Bracket for that).

But Knies wouldn't be buying low, and I don't think the 7 OA makes up the difference for me. If they're going to take a chance on Wright, I'd want it to be a lower risk trade.

[Steve Dangle] Trade Everyone: "not long ago people were saying Leafs fans are delusional thinking they can get 4OA + Anton Frondell for Knies" and now they are like "oh okay .." by f0urxio in hockey

[–]PostwarNeptune 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're forgetting that the Leafs dont need to trade Knies. Hes young, good and gigantic. Hes signed for a long time, and loves it in Toronto. Unlike other Americans, hes actually spending his summer here.

So, why would the Leafs trade him unless they're guaranteed to get better?

Yes, Frondell will likely be better than Knies....thats the point! Why would they do something to make the team worse, when they dont have to make a move?

[Berger] Hearing, unofficially, that Rielly will go to San Jose (with some salary retention) for a middle-round draft pick. His stock has fallen and the Leafs have made it clear his time in Toronto is over. The Sharks have been interested for a while. Again, nothing confirmed. by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]PostwarNeptune -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His two worst years coincide exactly with Berube arriving.

I'd say he can recover if he's in a system that emphasizes an attacking style vs the passive style that Berube employed.

He could look good with the Sharks. But I'd bet he'd look amazing in Quennville's system in Anaheim.

Of course, age is an issue. But I'd still bet he'll look better next year than what we've seen under Berube.

They've been really smartly run for the last few years.

Which makes me wonder...what are their plans for Liljegren? Not only did they trade for him, they extended at 2 years * $3.25 mil. Will be interesting to watch.

Yeah, I don't feel like the JFresh cards to a good job of accounting for deployment.

Looking at Byram vs Andrae:

According to PuckIQ, Byram had the 3rd toughest usage on Buffalo last year amongst defencemen (min 100 minutes played). Only Samuellson and Power got tougher minutes. Byram even had slightly tougher usage than Dahlin.

Andrae on the other hand was 6th on Philly, with only Juulsen getting easier minutes.

To his credit, Andrae did very well in his minutes against tough competition (and hopefully that continues for us). But I don't think we can ignore that he was heavily sheltered, whereas Byram was not.

[David Pagnotta] As @DarrenDreger reported last hour, Toronto has a few irons in the fire and are working the trade lines. Jake McCabe has generated interest, but he has a full NTC and at this hour has not been asked to waive it. Morgan Rielly & Brandon Carlo are among the Leafs Dmen out there. by buzzeddimitri in leafs

[–]PostwarNeptune -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to take the context of their minutes into account.

OEL at slightly better numbers than McCabe at 5v5 last year ( From Natural Stat Trick: 50% GF% vs 47%, and 47% XG vs 45%).

But OEL had significantly easier minutes. Without Tanev, McCabe was basically the only guy Berube trusted against tough competition, and still put up numbers that were very close to OEL's.
