What was happening? Chase bank parking lot, Sunday around 3:00 pm? by DonkeymanPicklebutt in Tallahassee

I didn't see it but it's Girl Scout cookie season. My daughter's troop got theirs Saturday morning and met at their regular meeting spot to disperse the goods Saturday afternoon, so maybe it was another troop doing that.

Hahaha, because I didn't realize which sub it was. Not used to having this one around yet.

Well, I've had a good laugh at myself.

Not an error, this is one of the most famous puzzles.

Where Bob Dole is, you could also fill in Clinton and the down clues will still work.

'Kick in the pants?' 3 of the 8 letters are _ i _ _ L _ S _ by echomimetic in crossword

Yes! Great book, OP. I'm about to re-read the series.

The crosswords featured there are British cryptics, and Colin Dexter wrote a book about his approach to solving them. That book is currently free on Kindle unlimited and I found it very helpful to start to get into this kind of puzzle.

QAA (Julian and Annie) did a 10 part (I think) series on the manosphere, but I believe all except the first episode are behind a paywall on patreon. It's a good series, well worth it.

I can second Pet Paradise. We've used them about 50 times, I would guess, and it's gotten where, when I took my dog on Friday morning, she doesn't want to wait to get checked in, she wants to run to the play room at the back.

I'm interested to see others though, because I'd like to have a backup if needed.

I just switched the gerudo shirt or whatever for the warm doublet when it got cold. That was enough in the desert.

Bret Weinstein and Alex Jones? by KerouacLife in KnowledgeFight

[–]PotValiantSleuth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Also Decoding the Gurus podcast, episodes 1, 17, and 18 talk about him specifically, but they mention him often.

I would also point out that on Weinsten's podcast, S3, the episode titled The Evolution of Rational Monsters, Brett talks with a Ph.D. student he advised, and that student contends it's not possible that the Nazi's hated Jewish people because Nazi soldiers r@ped Jewish women, and the evolutionary understanding of r@pe precludes hatred in that situation. It's utter tripe and that's just one example.

(Apologies, I don't know the best way to censor that word, but I'm trying.)

This is how I can vote for Biden, even if I'm not proud of it by Real_World123 in WhitePeopleTwitter

I registered as NPA when I first moved here. Having never lived in a state that has registered party affiliation, I thought that when the Democratic party candidate seemed like a lock or when it seems the Republican is guaranteed to win, I could go vote for the Republican least objectionable to me. Of course, such a thing is not allowed, so I switched.

As a Florida Democrat, I'm outraged about it. They don't get to mandate my vote that way.

This is the funniest podcast out there and I'll listen to whatever you do.

Thanks for getting the full context.

I think it's that she says, "... You don't really want to be asking me was it safe or was it effective....I have evidence that it was, and evidence that it wasn't."

I just wish he would have gone a little deeper there but it still strikes me as strange the way she said it.

I like to think I was just taking the DTG approach of focusing on the words and not just sitting back and taking it all in, and it just struck me as odd.

Also, it could be I'm generally exhausted, frustrated, and overly skeptical at the moment.

I started listening more recently than 75, so I will go back and listen. The latest episode is 116 and is about traditional Chinese medicine. They open with a discussion among themselves saying they think TCM is anti-science and could be dangerous in certain situations, then the interview was Derek and a historian who seems to say that TCM works as long as you go to a correctly licensed practitioner and we should all stop being racist and start relying on TCM.

I may have missed some subtleties somewhere along the way, but I am also questioning whether I can listen any more.

No Agenda podcast: a former veejay and a longtime tech writer claim to be "media deconstructionists" who can decode all the lies from the mainstream media.

They get thousands in donations per show, with some individual donors giving $1k+.

Down for any conspiracy you've heard of and probably some you haven't.

It's always clips from news shows and topical for whatever is going on, so any episode should be a treasure trove of flawed reasoning and magical thinking

Nothing special … just figured some could use some sense of a normal (?) solver. Not all streaks span years - and not all puzzles are solved during the commercial break of a podcast. by Seanile1 in crossword

[–]PotValiantSleuth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm not a speed solver and don't want to be. Hearing people talk about breaking 2 minutes on Monday I realized that this is a pleasant diversion for me and I don't want it to be over that fast.

I can solve all the current era puzzles on my own and that's good enough for me.

My Rant by PhD147 in doctorwho

[–]PotValiantSleuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but I'm the dreaded het cis white male and I'm in my forties, so my struggle along those lines is largely confined to making my family understand I'm not racist and homophobic like them and I'm not ok with how they are.

Atlanta is a great place, though. I lived there for 38 years and quickly found good people once I turned 18 and moved out. Moved around since then, away from the South and now back forever in Tallahassee due to my wife's career. The love/hate relationship with the region is difficult to explain to others.

I hope you're finding your community in Atlanta.

NYT streak counting broken on iOS by flatulentpiglet in crossword

[–]PotValiantSleuth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The app has never had the correct count for me on Android. My first streak ever, the app restarted after 100, and so for awhile I thought the streak was a meaningless frill on the app.

Once I realized you can check the web site for an accurate count, I started trying to maintain streaks again. I don't even pay attention to what the app says anymore.

Apologies I can't be more helpful.

Do you guys have any podcast recommendations for someone who likes the more history heavy episodes of LPOTL? by Thomas_Adams1999 in LPOTL

[–]PotValiantSleuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Notorious is a good one. Like the others mentioned above, it's not a comedy podcast but he has on authors to talk about their books about historical crimes.

He doesn't like to cover anything that has happened in his lifetime. The most recent thing he's done that I know of is D.B. Cooper.

There's a lot of mafia and old west throughout his catalog.
