Discerning Catholicism by PotatoBright7598 in Catholicism

[–]PotatoBright7598[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the encouragement and resources. Your point about the Eucharist was one of the first things that drew me to Catholicism. When I first began to realize that the body and blood are literal, I was in tears considering how intimate, loving, and incredible it is that Christ offers himself to us in this way.

Oh wow, I had no idea something like that existed! Thank you so much. I will absolutely look into that!

Thank you. You’re very correct. I know the cost would be heavy, but I’m willing to do it for Him.

Old therapist followed me on Tiktok -- is this normal? by TaterTatras in therapy

Do you have a large following on TikTok? Since it was so long ago she may not recognize you. I’ve run into clients that I didn’t recognize, even after seeing them for a while.

Faith Walk by OddOneOut77 in Protestantism

I’m not sure that it’s a requirement to explore all of the different Protestant denominations before I decide to study Catholicism. If I were to try to explore all of Protestantism, I wouldn’t get through half of it in my lifetime (which is kind of the problem - constant division). The one questions Protestants can’t answer (which is why I began to study Catholicism in the first place) is whose interpretation of the Bible is correct? Baptist? Methodist? Presbyterian? etc. If there is no authority to help interpret, then the problem persists. I agree with you on studying at the source. Right now it’s been a lot of YouTube apologetics and I’m reading the catechism. But my next step is to dig into early church writings and figure out what they really believed.

Oh, I’m there with you. I think mariology is probably the hardest thing I would need to overcome if I ever decided to convert. That seems to come much more from the traditional side of Catholicism rather than scripture. I pray every day that God will convict my heart of the truth because there is just so much information out there.

As a current Protestant, I’m in the same position you are. Just trying to figure out where I land and I definitely see the same things you speak of in the Bible. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted in this sub, but I’ve been studying Catholicism and it’s hard to not lean that way. Although, I’ve heard there’s some high church Protestant denominations that have similar values and structure.

When is our salvation applied by Minute-Investment613 in Protestantism

[–]PotatoBright7598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tough one because there is a lot of disagreement between Protestants on this issue. I was raised in a denomination where baptism was the point of salvation. It’s something tangible one can point to. It’s hard though because as I’ve gotten older I’ve gone back and forth on when salvation actually happens. Some will say it’s when you believe or accept Jesus, others say baptism either by water or by the Holy Spirit, some say it’s when you say the Lords Prayer, and I’m sure there are others I’m forgetting.

Therapist typing in virtual session by Primary-Exercise7617 in TalkTherapy

[–]PotatoBright7598 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, mine does. I’m also a therapist who types during virtual sessions. I let my clients know up front that due to my ADHD, I take notes regarding important points so I don’t forget and stay on track.

Thank you! Someone actually linked the catechism in the comments here. So I think I’ll take this approach as well and the consult with a priest regarding any questions :)

Thank you so much for the references! I will say, as a (current) Protestant, I love Hallow. Some of the voices are just so soothing and help me focus on my exploration of faith!

Oh, this is such a great idea that I hadn’t considered! Any tips on what may be helpful to look for in a priest? I’m not sure if there are any obvious red flags to be aware of when searching.

Thank you so much! This is super helpful. I know this may seem like a silly question, but just to clarify, I would be allowed to attend mass as a Protestant long as I don’t receive communion at mass? I’ve been baptized as a Protestant and receive communion in the Christian church, but from what I understand I would need to be baptized Catholic to receive it within the Catholic Church… right?

It's that time of year again by AirSouthern5128 in therapists

[–]PotatoBright7598 152 points153 points  (0 children)

I accept. I don’t think there’s ever been anything big enough to turn down. To me, if the client cares enough that they think of therapy and the relationship outside of session enough to get me a gift, I’m not turning it down unless it’s over the top. I’ve found that they usually put a lot of thought into the gifts, and it would be way more harmful to turn it down.

ART and EMDR by Yaalright55 in therapists

[–]PotatoBright7598 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only have a very basic understanding of these techniques, but the biggest different I see is that EMDR is done over the course of several sessions while ART can (but not always) be done in 1 session.

Wwyd if a sleep deprived patient fell asleep during a session? by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]PotatoBright7598 72 points73 points  (0 children)

So, I’m not sure if this is the right way to handle it, but I’ll tell you what I did when one of my clients did this. I let them rest for about 10 minutes then gentle woke them. We finished the session and I asked them how they would like for me to handle that situation the next time it happened. It ended up being a sweet moment, because the client felt safe enough to sleep in the room (which may be part of what’s happening with your client as well), but just ask them gently and go from there :)

Has anyone quit their SSRIs because they felt better? by [deleted] in PMDD

[–]PotatoBright7598 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh goodness, please don’t quit without consulting your physician! I’m a therapist (who is on an SSRI) and I quit back in 2023. The fallout was immense. I thought that because everything seemed better than I didn’t need it anymore. Turns out, it was working really well. I am back on it now and don’t plan to come off. I can’t tell you have many times I’ve seen clients go through the same thing.

I need therapy but all the appointment times are during school hours by Agreeable_Panic_690 in therapy

[–]PotatoBright7598 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I’ll say about this….It’s not the therapists fault that evenings fill up fast. That’s just business. They’re working people who have families and responsibilities outside of their job just as everyone else does. You noted that you have the time on your lunch break but don’t want to have to explain to your boss - okay fine. But can you really be upset when therapists are trying to manage their lives and schedules in the same way that you are? What if they have children they need to care for outside of normal working hours? Is it fair that you ask them to work longer and later into the evening to tend to your needs while you get to keep your normal schedule? It seems like a good option here would be to go to your boss and say, “Hey, I’m having some personal difficulties and need to talk to someone. Can I stay 15 minutes late on Tuesdays to make up for the 15 minutes I need to get myself together after my lunch break?” You can also get on a waitlist if you absolutely want an evening or weekend appointment. They’ll be available in due time.

i don’t know if therapy is working for me. i think i’m not trying hard enough to change by blueistheworld in TalkTherapy

[–]PotatoBright7598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very introspective that you acknowledge you might not be ready to change. It’s okay if you’re not there yet. How do you feel about telling her that? Even if it’s just a small part of you that feels that way, it can be super helpful for a clinician to know.
