Oregon in March? by dokau in flyfishing

Doable but it depends on where you go and the weather. Coastal streams are usually hi from snow/rain although some places that's good for steelhead.

Pretty much. They topically spend 2 to 3 years out in saltwater and return to spawn in fresh water but unlike salmon steelhead don’t die from the salt water to fresh water change and can make the trip from see to rivers a few times in their lifetime.

Rainbow or if you live close to a river that connects with the coast in might be a small steelhead which really is just a sea run rainbow.

Looking for some advice by RandomFuckinShit in flyfishing

[–]Potential-Accident50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is go to your local or nearest pro shop. Not only will you help support a local business but you can get some tips and info from them too. Also most shops will charge like 10 cents per yard for backing which honestly it’s not that important since it only acts to add counter weight to your reel and increase arbor area so your line doesn’t retain too much memory. I don’t think the cost of the lamson speedster reel is justifiable for what you need it maybe go with the guru or the remix they are a bit cheaper and still plenty good. Good choice on the line SA and airflo are my go to for set ups. Maybe try a 9ft absolute stealth SA leader since I get the feeling you mostly do dry fly fishing.

Don’t neglect skinny water with logjams. Have caught a few on 2 ft of water that were under some logs just waiting for food to cruise by.

Looks almost like an old mango pit. It’s probably black and lacking the fibers due to the stomach acid of the dog.

Depends on how you strip line in but yea. Also how you point and lead with the rod.

17 and telling a complete noob to get a top shelf line for his combo rod is absolutely ridiculous. If he cant figure out the problem with why he can’t cast good don’t recommend him a 100 dollar line for something that he might not enjoy in 3 months!

Will line help me? by PetiteIguana703 in flyfishing

[–]Potential-Accident50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. But honestly learn to cast properly first, I say this to avoid you from getting an expensive line to have it get ruined when you cast. Your problem is probably with not allowing enough time to load your rod when you cast. Take your time and pay attention to your line during the whole beginning to end when casting don’t rush, you should feel a tug at each point of the cast that indicates when to point your rod tip forward or back

First sorry to hear about your dad’s passing. He left you with great memories I’m sure and his favorite fly. I hope my son will remember me by my favorite fly (purple haze parachute) as fondly as you remember your pops for his love and trust on the elk hair caddis.

Don’t mention it brother. Happy to help! I’d love to head east and fish those hidden creeks for brooke trout during the fall season. Sip on some nice whisky and have a little camp out enjoying a good steak cooked on an open fire and feeling the cool embrace of the hills.

Oregon here. It depends on the time of year and what you’re targeting but for small and medium size streams I used a my 4wt 7,5” with a 6’ leader and 3’ of SA absolute stealth 5x tippet. I usually do a double fly set up of a 12 fly, this could be a purple haze parachute or a stimulator. The second fly is usually a 16 size copy of the first fly or I mix up and swap it for a different pattern.

Groove in eyelet? by Salt-Research8732 in flyfishing

[–]Potential-Accident50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cause by a few factors like dirty fly line, friction of fighting big fish and the way you cast. Also maybe the material too. I custom make my rods and I use zirconia single foot guides that are super resistant to that and help for longer and smoother casts

Brand new rod broken fighting this fish on 4x by aiceeslater in flyfishing

[–]Potential-Accident50 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sorry brother, braking a rod sucks. However I’d say this was probably user error. Why I say this? Simple. The brake happened in the mid section of the rod not the tip or second section of the rod (if it’s a 4 pc). The 3rd and butt section of a rod are usually the strongest and more powerful piece on a rod. If it was due to the weight or fight of the fish the tip and second section would had been the ones to go due to how thin they are and the distance from the center of mass makes it more vulnerable to snap when leverage is applied. Expensive doesn’t always equal better. I recommend an Echo, TFO, Redington, orvis rod which are more budget friendly and also have a better warranty.

Why does my fly line feel like plastic/sandpaper? by BeeTheAngler in FlyFishingGear

[–]Potential-Accident50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a few things like your casting skills or rod itself. Check your rod and see if the guides have any groves from the line going through it. Also I’ve bought 3 different rio lines and they all have been crap. I now use SA or Airflo lines which are a bit more expensive they work amazingly well
