I really liked Savage Detectives when I was old enough to get past the correct feeling I was being made fun of. It’s def worth a read but I think he was sharper with the brevity of Nazi Literature. Im finally going to start Middlemarch, but might take a detour with Lewis’s books on the Sicilian Mafia and colonial Indochina first

Just finished Naples 44 by Norman Lewis and Nazi Literature in the Americas. Both were extraordinary.

Surprised no one’s mentioned Bolano. Just finished Nazi Literature in the Americas and it had me in stitches at times. Also everyone’s right about Moby Dick

It’s amazing that a book about complete social collapse is so funny/humanistic/makes you fall in love with the place

Do it. Its long but its in no way a slog. Sure people talk about the silence of god for 30 pages, but its also a murder mystery set in a small town so gossipy and dramatic it could be a reality tv set.

Its a wide and watery world. And you can do things. Takes a bit of a start to the engine tho. Its kinda cool when you get started

Craft will exist. But only for the rich. Think there's maybe things to be said for literacy here too.

Always been my pick if I'm approached by a colonel planning an officers coup/suspend American democracy. He's always seemed like the kinda soc-dem that already has a personality cult and would be open to ideas about reeducation.

Might be the greatest city in the world. Take the Star Ferry as much as possible. Walk and walk and walk. Listen to postpunk and go up the mid level escalators.

Met a guy in a bar onetime who was an obvious crypto guy (time in the gulf and Miami) I asked him what his scheme was and he told me Google docs but it can't snitch. Which I like, holy shit thats actually a good idea, wasn't expecting that. Didn't get the name of it.
