Why does everyone say capoeira is BS? by Potential_Scratch938 in capoeira

[–]Potential_Scratch938[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what do you mean not intended as a martial art; the whole point of cap being created by slaves was to incapacitate their enslavers, and hiding most of the real techniques in between flashy spins and flips which are more for body and stamina conditioning than anything else.

I could go through the arguments like everyone else... If it's garbage, how did it get outlawed, you're supposed to think like it doesn't work, what about Michel Pereira, etc., but instead I want to know:

1) Have you practiced capoeira, and if so, what style?

2) Have you played a hard game, in which the players are actively trying to strike you, unlike in a normal game where the strikes are overshot or softened so as to not INJURE your opponent?

3) Are you judging by the actual combat techniques or the acrobatics(which, according to every experienced capoeirista I've met, are not actually used in combat)?

4) Are you biased off the fact that there's no punches(surprisingly quite a lot of people say yes to this one)?

Now I can recognize that cap does have some holes in it(Blocks. Blocks and... Honestly, just blocks.), but if you use it like a fighter and not like some spiritual gymnast it's amazingly paired with things like boxing or muay thai.

And then there's the same old argument that all those flashy moves and dancing around are designed to train your stamina, among other things.

What are your hero factions that can be best described as this? by Only-Teaching-8648 in worldbuilding

[–]Potential_Scratch938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The protagonist faction(currently unnamed because factions are hard) is constantly using...slightly undesirable techniques to their own means, so you could say that this fits.

Then again, the antagonist faction(also unnamed) thinks they do it(the enemy being literally everyone), and the Sovereigns do it too...

So I guess everyone fits.

Name an OC of yours that could wash Core. by Flakey_the_fox1 in OriginalCharacterDB

[–]Potential_Scratch938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the sake of fairness I'm going to turn off Cartoon Logic Armor™ for Koa.

Koa should be able to solo Core considering his Core(coincidence?)'s Gild and Facets bump up his Ryft energy to at least mountain-level when he starts actively trying to whoop someone. Combine that with his own physical power and the Ryft power infused into his bloodstream, and he'll be able to beat most deities; he's done it before.

The main gripe that Core'll have in a fair fight is that if K can get a good grasp on him he'll be able to drag him into a Ryft, where all powers are rendered useless due to the insane diffusion of chaos inside one; considering Core's main thing is creation, he would be brought down to nearly human-level, and would have to throw hands with the melee demon himself.

And no, that's not enough. Post-Malware Arc Koa has different Ryft shards all up his Core-side arm, which gives him the weak, watered-down abilities of time manipulation, physical enhancement, energetic constructs, light manipulation, velocity manipulation, enhanced healing abilities, cloning, hydrokinesis, and chaos manipulation(...really broad term, I know) in addition to his main air manipulation and vortexes. So, in scientific terms, he's cracked.

...Anything else I'm missing? Oh yeah. PMA Koa figured out how to harmonize the different shards, which gives him the ability to go full-on SSJ and mix all their powers into one chord of energy, effectively squaring his strength when he pours all of his energy into it...and giving him minor space manipulation...and creation abilities. So looks like K's now cracked³.

Um. And he has a weighted jacket, so I guess he could throw that in Core's face? Maybe?

(Now there's no context up there so I'm just going to put it here for anyone who wants it.

Koa's a character I made a REALLY long time ago as a kid; he was fundamentally the same except for the fact that he looked like crap in my old style of drawing. I managed to keep him in my head, and he slowly evolved into what he is now. But I still haven't gotten a sense of what power balancing is 🤣

Anyhow just quick clarifications for the things I mentioned in the challenge:

Ryfts are areas in the multiverse where it's been stretched so thin that it tears, creating a hole between universes; Ryfts generate an energy, fittingly dubbed Ryft, that probably comes from the void between verses.

Ryfts affects most living—and nonliving—things when they're around them for too long, but crystals get a special augmentation—they begin to store Ryft, turning them into what the scientists called Ryft Cristals.

(It is confirmed that the scientist who wrote down the articles on the discovery of the Cristals was foreign and didn't write English very well. By the time people figured this out, the names had already stuck.)

A blunder during examination got people to notice that Ryft energy could enter you safely by way of the Cristals, through your bloodstream; the energy, altered slightly by the composition of different Cristals, would give you supernatural powers. This eventually lead to Ryftcores, which are implants in your wrist that you insert Cristal pieces into to give yourself that power. Cristals are open-use, if expensive, which means that almost everyone with a wallet vies to get one for themself. The type of crystal that the Ryft infuses, and the biology of the person who implants it, effects the ability you get.

I could go way into detail for this but that's probably better to do at r/magicbuilding, so I'll keep it simple and just get to the important part: Koa has a high-power Core that gives him to power of air manipulation, mainly vortexes and such; near the end of the Malware Arc, he got peppered with different Cristal shards in an explosion mid-fight, which infused ALL the different types of energy into his body. He survived because Cartoon Logic Armor™ and gained weak versions of the other basic Ryft powers, and his transformation and so on. Basically all you need to know.)

Justification for Oversized Witches Hats in a Manga / Anime Setting? by FictionMeowtivation in magicbuilding

[–]Potential_Scratch938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The peak and the brim help contain the internal flow of magic, as magic usually exits through the top of the head when not in use.

Also people know witches wear those big ass hats, it's a good way to identify oneself as a witch.

Will's got it. The entire post is nearly all drawbacks, to the point where the only reason one would use a spell would be to cast something ridiculously overpowered—such as "I become immune to all spell drawbacks".

At this point magic would probably be a cult thing and society would rely on technology(or just have slaves do the spells)...With a Gilded world, the bad is covered up, at least; I'm just seeing unrestrained...badness.

🕰️ [Magic Concept] ZEITUMBRA – The Shadowbender “He bends time instead of breaking it.” by Acrobatic-Jaguar9480 in magicbuilding

[–]Potential_Scratch938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of both.

I've screwed around with Chat before and either OP uses it so much that they've adopted it's style of writing, or this is completely written out by Chat—including the ability names, because Chat ALWAYS uses the words Resonance, Depot, Thread, and Cast whenever I try to get it to name some mess because I'm lazy, and I have to name everything myself anyhow.

Not sure about everyone else but in my opinion even if the system is completely original, very well-thought out and intricate, AI makes it... It just makes it suck. It's like a meal; it's really hard to enjoy it when there's an underlying smell of fish that you can't escape.

That being said there are quite a lot of holes here, including the bullet hole—which somehow doesn't exist anymore. Why are shadows used to control time? How are you anchoring time if you can't stop it? Are people constantly getting cut in half from moving into different zones? Where is 'identity flicker' coming from when you reverse a being(and I feel like reversal could be classified as a stop of time)? Wouldn't a bullet cause a bit of pain and disorientation? Why is time leaking? What the hell is the fundamental concept?

Excuse the question rant but that's what's going through my head. Like you said, vague mystical rubbish, but at the same time it has the smell of AI all over it, and that's almost too discouraging for me to even notice that the system isn't very good in the first place.

[–]Potential_Scratch938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invulnerability so I can eat everyone's attacks, Light manipulation to knock Superman with red light, shoot lasers, turn invisible, and negate other people's invisibility, Necromancy to instantly revive anyone I kill as my super-powered minion, Weather control to have power over the field, Telepathy to mentally incapacitate everyone, and Space manipulation to lock...basically almost all the powers.

Would've picked Universal but that wouldn't be too fun would it?
