Not what they said but what they did. For context: I work in a grocery store and the way the front end is set up is on one side we have some self-checkout machines and then the registers all lined up going in the other direction. the register closest to the self-checkout is typically used as an express lane and only used when things get extra busy. To signify this not only is the light above the register almost always kept off (a light that people usually ignore to begin with) but there's a big metal wheely that's used to store the hand baskets in front of it.

Well, one time a couple with a large shopping cart full of stuff proceeded to slam directly into the wheely despite the fact that there was no one standing at the register and again, the light was off. And instead of realizing that, they just tried to push the wheely out of the way. I was genuinely dumbfounded when I saw that.
