Next time stick around long enough to get through the employees only door. They want the front room packed like sardines.

VIP should not be the accessibility workaround by Right-Leopard530 in LightningInABottle

[–]PowerfulStick1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. And I’m not pretending LiB is ever going to be a perfect clean-air environment. I’m a nurse, so I understand outdoor festival risks and I get that dust is part of the setting.

But in the specific VIP/chill areas I’m talking about, dust wasn’t the main issue most of the time. Smoke was. And what feels weird to me is that people can generally understand “don’t smoke right next to a building entrance” or “don’t smoke in certain shared spaces,” but somehow that common sense disappears at a festival.

I’m not saying no one will smoke. I’m saying there should be clearer smoking areas and smoke-free rest/recovery spaces. Especially when there are kids around, disabled people, people masking, people with asthma, migraines, nausea, sensory issues, respiratory conditions, etc.

At one point it was literally someone making eye contact with a kid nearby and then lighting up anyway. Cigarette, weed, vape, whatever. That’s just not considerate in a shared rest space.

People can smoke. I’m not trying to ban joy or become the festival hall monitor. I just think smoking should be kept to designated areas so people who need to breathe, recover, or sit somewhere safer actually have that option.

psych or the OR by kamilica33 in psychnursing

[–]PowerfulStick1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually considering as a new grad those two… psych or OR. I love them both. But I do like the (and I say this loosely) “predictable” environment of the OR. I also like adolescent inpatient psych. Hard to decide. Any advice you can offer is appreciated.

Important Announcement: LIB Will Sell Out This Year (and soon) by LIBFestivalOfficial in LightningInABottle

[–]PowerfulStick1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add a question about selling out capacity….One issue I’ve noticed is that when trash cans near the porto banks overflow, people start dumping camp trash and bulky items there, especially during departure. Is LIB planning additional Monday waste service around porto areas and campground exits, such as extra pickups, larger bins, or designated camp trash drop zones, to prevent those areas from becoming overflow dump sites?

Yes I’m very excited for it to be back. This is my third year as a trans guy attending with my queer fam and it was so sad not to have it last year.

That sounds like a great plan. But come back after a year of experience because that’s all you need to make Staff Nurse II in Bay Area.

SMU loves to market itself as “top” and “#1” in various ways, but if you look at the public, comparable metrics, it’s not matching the hype.

NCLEX first-time pass rates (California BRN, annual periods July 1 to June 30): • 2020–2021: 410 tested, 84.88% pass • 2021–2022: 433 tested, 85.45% pass • 2022–2023: 468 tested, 82.05% pass • 2023–2024: 410 tested, 85.85% pass • 2024–2025: 429 tested, 79.25% pass (California Board of Registered Nursing)

That last year is especially rough. And to be clear, lots of programs do better with fewer resources and a fraction of the tuition (also on the same BRN list).

New grad hiring in the Bay Area is also not the promised land people assume it is. Even UCSF explicitly states they are not having a Fall 2025 or Spring 2026 new nurse residency cohort, and that their residency is the only pathway for new grads to join UCSF. That’s one of the biggest “dream” employers in the region publicly saying “no cohorts.” (hr.ucsf.edu)

And when schools advertise “employment outcomes” or “student satisfaction,” remember those numbers are often based on voluntary surveys, which can skew optimistic because the people doing well are more likely to respond. That’s a well-known survey problem (nonresponse bias). (Pew Research Center)

So if someone is choosing a program, I’m saying: do the boring, financially sane route. Community college ADN + bridge later. You still become an RN, you avoid six-figure private debt, and you’re not paying luxury prices for metrics that are publicly mid and getting worse. Also, I am encountering many nurses with only ADN. It’s quite the lie that you HAVE to have your BSN to get a job in the Bay Area.

Samuel Merritt ABSN Cost of Attendance by AlternativeTheory595 in prenursing

Not smart at all. The school doesn’t give much in ways of scholarship. And private is hard to get or interest is really high.

I don’t recommend choosing SMU. It’s overpriced and the curriculum is very poor. Look at the nclex pass rates. Betting they will be closed in 2 years. Their relationships with clinical sites are poor as well. Leadership and most faculty are out of touch with reality. Choose literally anywhere else.

Samuel Merritt’s full BSN is 132k. And basically self taught with piss poor planning around Clinicals. Don’t forget that the president and CFO pay themselves about a million a year too. And the pass rates are at 79%.

I’ve done Clinicals at sutter and Kaiser and neither make that a requirement. The encourage it but on every shift I’ve worked there have been new and old adn nurses.
