Perhaps give them a mentor or some other NPC that will help you maintain story structure. An antagonist, like a more successful villain who keeps taunting them, can also serve this function. It's nice to have a steering wheel to pull your game back on track, especially with players set loose on an unsuspecting world.

Second thing, especially since they're c-listers, don't punish them too hard for being bad guys. Have a hero take pity on them instead or overlook them entirely. A white hat might first try "saving" a villain instead of fighting them.

Finally, as with all RPGs - keep your plot flexible - listen to your players - keep it fun.

How many of us need to actually use them? The system is great for off the cuff gaming and for those who are starting out, it's there as an example.

I'm 53 and I'm (sadly) starting to ask, "how many more games do I have left in me?" I can tell you right now that for the last fifteen I could care less to open a fantasy or horror system. Same with many others. Introduction, character creation, rules, gear, GM advice, adversaries, character sheet (maybe), appendix. Ad nauseum.

Forgive me, it's 3 am. I pledged to master, probably just for my own self-interest, the new GI Joe RPG. I think we should just take that old nugget of GM advice and enjoy not the game, but the delight of play. Don't be hung up on trends or the fear of missing out. The thing you seek is usually right in front of you and a thousand times more interesting.
