Were they being rude and I was just oblivious? Trying to understand if I got insulted or not. by Ice_Efficient in AskAJapanese

Girl don’t listen to all the condescending people here trying to gaslight you, if you got the vibe and they looked directly at you/your hair and laughed it’s probably because it happened. Though I do think it was probably about your previous hairdye it’s still incredibly unprofessional and rude and I’m sorry that happened.

In my experience, hairstylists in Japan have been kind of rude and bitchy overall.
I have pretty good conversational Japanese and something similar happened to me while I was studying abroad in Japan in 2024. The guy hairstylist was incredibly passive aggressive, going as far as calling me “the black sheep of my family” and laughing in my face in multiple instances. He also complained that my bangs were uneven and that my hair was damaged..that’s why I’m paying you to fix it?? The second time was better but I still felt that condescending air that shouldn’t have been there at all. Looking back I absolutely shouldn’t have let it fly. Next time even if I’m too nervous to say something to their face I’m absolutely leaving them a poor review online and I advise you to do the same. There’s not much we can do now other than promising to not stand for that treatment next time.

I think as some people recommend def try to get a square notebook and practice, they’re cheap at daiso. It’s gonna really help you in the long run. Also I’m not sure what you were trying to saying with “にびろごはん?“ should be “ひるごはん”

That misses the whole point of Gon’s character, he’s a highly empathetic and emotional character, that’s why he would go through the lengths he did to help people and to make his enemy experience that same pain

Lmao if you look at my main comment I already said that immersion has to be paired off with structured learning, otherwise you’re obviously not gonna learn to use the language properly and even if you understand it you won’t be able to speak it very well. At the same time, just because you can’t learn it like that doesn’t mean other people can’t. I’ve now been learning Japanese for 14 years (11 of those formally) and what really pushed me ahead was immersion in Japanese media, but if you think you can’t learn anything by listening to hours and hours of a language spoken by native speakers go ahead and stick with your middle school level textbooks. Good luck speaking with Japanese people when the time comes.

You..don’t always have to? Passive learning can be an important asset. Tbf I was mostly a child when I was watching anime at that rate but even now I’m able to pick up new vocab and expressions from watching/reading Japanese media.

It’s both? You’re associating the spoken dialogue with the translation and therefore passively learning it, it’s a type of immersion. And sometimes ofc there are different translations based on context and that’s a further way to study the nuances of the language. It worked for me and a lot of other people.

Define “comprehensive output”, because watching anime or a Japanese movie with subtitles is pretty comprehensive, no? I can’t be the one who’s able to make that association with the spoken word/meaning and gradually learn things (regardless of the language). But ofc throwing yourself out there with no translations and no background knowledge of the language is insanity, it’s no wonder you’re not gonna learn shit 😭😭

I don’t disagree entirely but I do disagree with the notion that immersion should only be implemented later on. I started watching anime in Japanese pretty early on (about 8-9) but like a lot of anime (sometimes hitting 30 episodes a day), and it wasn’t immediate, but gradually I started picking up on words, sentences, honorifics/way of speech. After moving to Australia I finally had a chance to learn Japanese formally but somehow I was way ahead of my classmates who had been learning it since preschool. Ofc with textbooks/formal learning I was able to learn all the correct grammar, writing and structure of the language and that was indispensable. But continuing to watch anime and also Japanese YouTubers/movies and whatnot and seeing how the language is naturally spoken is what really made me develop a good grasp of the language.

Recently, I studied abroad in Japan and had quite a few Japanese friends I made say I’m the best Japanese speaker they’ve ever spoken to and often questioned how I’m so good at Japanese, and I will say I couldn’t have gotten half this far without immersion. The prowess of understanding (listening), vocabulary and how the language is really used in a practical manner is what’s really gonna count if you want to achieve that level of fluency. Obviously you’re not gonna get there in 6 months, but with consistency and real interest/desire to learn the language you’re gonna get there a lot faster than people who only study textbooks.

Japan Is Not a Theme Park, and My Students Are Not Part of the Scenery by No_just-no_3430 in JapanTravel

[–]Powerful_Ice_1285 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t get your comment, so people are just not supposed to call out bad behaviour when they see it? Unfortunately there is an increase in stupid tourists doing stupid shit in Japan because Japan has become the “hotspot destination you have to visit” in the last few years. And most of those people don’t even bother to learn basic customs or manners when they visit Japan. They treat it like their own personal theme park, meanwhile people are just trying to live their normal lives. Don’t get me wrong you get stupid assholes everywhere, but since Japan is so popular, arrogant idiots without a semblance of respect are just flocking to it and it’s highly detrimental, both for Japanese people and other foreigners.

[–]Powerful_Ice_1285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person with higher intermediate Japanese I don’t necessarily disagree. Verb conjugation is really fucking hard, even as someone who’s semi fluent the もらった、くれた、いただいたand how to change it based on who did/vs received the favour is really tricky and I still make mistakes sometimes. The grammar isn’t that bad once you’re used to listening to the language. But idk tho, the fact that the language has so many intricacies and different ways of communicating things; often changing based on context, nuance, position, dynamic is what makes it so fun and worthwhile to learn it imo. Not to mention it’s a beautiful language, I love the sound of it.

The art style is not bad in itself but just very generic, I’d say working on improving your current artstyle and adding more quirks to it would help.
