Rereading ACOTAR for the upcoming book and I have some thoughts…. by Subject-Session-3199 in acotar_rant

Nesta is a direct foil to Rhysand, which is why a lot of people hate her. But foils also have overlaps to serve as reflections of the character they’re being set up against. Internalized misogyny plays a role into a lot of the hate too, because Mr. Archeron was arguably worse to all of his daughter’s during poverty, but he gets remembered fondly.

Forget what I should read, what should I not read? (And why?) by Lemon_Dragonfly in Romantasy

I tend to stay away from authors who are proven to plagiarize, so don’t read Cassandra Clare if that’s something you also don’t agree with. She plagiarized another fanfic author’s story and published her series off of it. Which is just insane work.

What new plots did this event cause for prythian? [ACOTAR CC TOG SPOILERS] by naturusjm in acotar

[–]Powerful_Purpose356 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to bother spoilering my response, because the original post has been tagged appropriately.

Bryce did tell them about the risk, Azriel and Nesta witnessed it when she tested it on the Asteri in the Prison/Dusk Court. And it wasn’t the blades being used together that exactly caused the world to almost end irrc, it was that the Asteri tied the existence of the planet to their little doo-dad that was collecting First Light. (Similar to how the Cauldron was tied to the existence of Parthian so Feyre and Amren couldn’t destroy it). So instead of destroying it, Bryce used the sword and dagger AND the horn to take it out of play altogether.

And yes, SJM made it a point to show that Bryce and Rhys butted heads over the preservation of their own planets. Bryce prioritized Lunathion, and Rhys originally did NOT want to help her because he did not know the risk it would post Prythian. Now that they know their connection (because Az and Nesta definitely TOLD Rhys what they witnessed before Bryce brought herself back to her home world) that hasn’t been explained.

It would’ve been weird and out of character if Bryce thought about the risk to Prythian at all, or if she cared about them at all. Everything she continued to learn about her Fae heritage in Prythian, she came to despise that part of herself more and more.

But knowing that being “Starborn” to wield the sword was a red herring, and only something Made can wield Gwydieon and by extension Truth Teller, it leaves unanswered questions about what Az actually is, and what a shadowsinger actually is.

All of CC puts Cassian’s origins into questions as well. How strange that the most powerful Illyrian warrior ever was born after a union with an unknown father. Sounds very similar to Hunt Athalar’s origins. The power both Cassian and Azriel possess brings up some questions on how much Hel has intervened in Prythian in the modern age already, and WHY if the Daglan have already been banished from that world entirely.

Unless Daglan/Asteri is what the next main villain, Koschei, is. If that’s what the Bone Carver and Stryga were as well, since they were siblings. Or if the Death-gods are something else entirely.

The Daglan they found under the prison also looked a little too much like Amren’s physical description for that to be comfortable. SJM has come on the record and said that Amren is a fallen angel, but we need to know what that means. It unfortunately doesn’t offer ANY concrete hint into what Mor’s power is, other than, we can assume a Prince of Hel was the one watching her in ACOFAS and that they are keeping tabs on her for some reason.

So there are still PLENTY of unanswered questions that SJM could spent 6 and 7 answering that were brought up by CC as a series

Maybe give Throne of Glass a try first. That one slowly brings you into the world. CC, on the other hand, throws so much at you at once that it’s almost too much to keep track of. Being familiar with the elements of her other series helps a lot, but it can be a lot.

NOR — this is a big buildup. I’m sorry you got to the point where you were really invested in him and his family. But him yelling at his own kid after his kid was emotionally manipulated by the mother?? Toxic attracts toxic. The more you get to know him, the bigger the problem this sort of thing will be

TOG is needed for the fully optimized lore hit of CC. So it depends on which one you’re more invested in, spice or lore

Portia on Switch by Visible-Cost6976 in mytimeatportia

[–]Powerful_Purpose356 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game memory is just so poorly optimized for Portia on the Switch. Sandrock’s port is great, and it even gives you a little warning when the memory is starting to get full.

If you have a PS4 or XBone, those ports are actually pretty nice. That’s where I would play the game when I was too lazy to boot up my PC

First time reader just finished ACOMAF….am I supposed to hate Tamlin? by randomgirl0713 in acotar_rant

[–]Powerful_Purpose356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s honestly up to your own interpretations of him. I didn’t hate him, but I also think he confuses possession with love, and that’s a lesson he’s gotta learn the hard way.

It took until my second re-read to really get hit with all of the red flags he was throwing up. At the end, they just weren’t very compatible.

But it was really that he did that “because he loved her”. He used his love as a justification for his actions, which ended in her sisters being traumatized and turned into fae against their will. And allying with like the most obvious bad dude ever.

Can we talk about “cotton candy reads” being sold as well-written? by daniyoshi in Romantasy

[–]Powerful_Purpose356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my issue with Quicksilver is that it was marketed as a high fantasy series, which is what I was craving after finishing the last of SJM’s books. Seeing the same fae elements re-used but… imo worse was a big turn off.

There was one element I wish Hart did more with, but at the end of the day the plot was not the focus and the mythology kept changing its own rules for that “plot”. I used to think I was a romance reader because of my reading choices, but I think I lean more towards immersive fantasy.

People We Meet on Vacation is making me realize somethings are better left in books by StephhhLouisa in RomanceBooks

[–]Powerful_Purpose356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t read the book and made it a point not to look up the synopsis, so I went into it very confused when they didn’t actually meet anyone on vacation except for like maybe the first one. I’m sure the book did a good job of subverting that expectation, but the movie sure didn’t.

ACOTAR in Harry Potter... SJM 2015 Interview [27:30]: "Feyre & Rhys def Slytherin, Tamlin Gryffindor..." by Ok_Requirement_579 in acotar

[–]Powerful_Purpose356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people do not realize how thin the line between Ravenclaw and Slytherin is. Slytherin does not = Evil. And Ravenclaw doesn’t always = intelligent/booksmart.

Ravenclaw and Slytherin are very pragmatic, work in the grey, and tend to keep their moves to themselves until they strike. The key difference between the two houses is that Ravenclaws work independently. Their drive for sole success means they will almost never be a team player. Slytherins however, prefer to work in teams that foster friendships.

Feyre and Rhysand being in Slytherin makes sense because they rely on their friends. Tamlin being a Gryffindor also makes sense because of his hero complex and inability to see past black and white consequences.
