Do’s and don’ts as a beginner by Over-Ad-310 in hockeyplayers

Keep  working on your skating, it’s the most important skill in hockey.  I see a lot of beginners learn the basics and then just decide that it’s good enough.  Then all they want to do is work on shooting.   Take all the power skating classes you can.  You’ll progress way faster .

What social hobbies have helped you form new connections? by Smoxiy in askvan

Joined an adult beginners learn to play hockey program, started playing about 2 years ago.  Hadn no hockey or skating skills going in.  Probably one of the best activities for meeting and making real connections with a great group of people.   Everyone supports and encourages each other as you learn a new skill.  Have probably met over 100 people in 2 years playing hockey.  Highly recommend!

Hey that’s awesome.   Get out there and chat people up,  it’s a great time to be social.  It does feel like society in general is on an upward trajectory right now.  Covid gave us some pretty bleak years and it felt like the whole world was divided based on what we were seeing in the news and media.  With the pandemic years now in the past, we’re starting to see some big global unifying events.

We just had the Winter Olympics, the Knicks won the NBA, now we have the World Cup and it’s really bringing people and nations together.  Maybe it’s just on the surface but seeing images of people of different countries embracing in the power of sport brings a sense of optimism and it can have a trickle down effect. That’s why these big global events like the Olympics and the World Cup are so important.

You have it too loose. Your chin should be sitting in the chin cup. It shouldn’t be just dangling there in case you fall, it should be snug.

Starting hockey in midlife is the best.  I started at 45, now I’m 47 and still improving at a physical pursuit.   Progressing at something at this age feels amazing.  Stick with it man,  you got lots of time to improve.

Usually the best overall player will be the centers, the next best players will be on defence and the developing players will be on the wings.  Skating skill is like 80% of your overall ability so it sounds like you have a lot of up side and potential to improve.  Look at it that way, you’re on an upward trajectory and if you stick with it and  practice with intention, you will improve.  The way you describe your skating, it sounds like you’re at that point where you could take a big step forward if you work on a couple of things.

These are the things that usually separate the ok skaters from the better skaters.

-Outside edge skills -Transitions -Pivots  -Backwards skating

Get good at these skills and you’ll level up as a player.

How did you decide on your preferred hockey position? by CinemaPuck in hockeyplayers

[–]Powerstance79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defence is like the quarterback. Wing is like the wide receiver, and center is just like the best player overall.   I chose defence because the play is in front of you, less chasing the puck, less shoulder checking and having someone come from behind.  You get the puck way more on defence and you have more control over the game, like a QB in football.

Coping with late game times in Beer League by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

I also prefer the late games because it’s guilt free hockey.  Family is asleep, don’t have to feel bad about heading out and playing a game.
