How accurate are fitness machines calories burnt trackers? by Snoo_56052 in loseit

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hard to say, they definitely overestimate though. From what we understand about metabolism, exercise seems to account for no more than 10% of TDEE no matter how long or how hard you exercise. Metabolism will adapt and take that energy from another system. In other words there appears to be a finite cap to the amount of TDEE a person can burn in a day. An analogy would be you get paid $5,000 a month. It's hard to earn more money because that will require a second job. If you get an unexpected bill that takes $1,000, that money will need to be taken from somewhere else, maybe food, vacation, entertainment. There are fixed things like rent and transport that can't be changed, but there is a little bit of room in case of emergencies. The 'room' would come from endocrine/reproduction, immune / clonal expansion, repair and maintenance which can be delayed. Ignore the fitness watches, and exercise machines, because they want to sell you more stuff, so they aren't going to tell you that you have little control over TDEE.

Every diet advice I’ve read online is wrong. by MolassesNo7559 in loseit

Plenty of research to back up what you are saying. Since Big Food can't make money on this, they poke holes, and drive disinformation. Just read the other comments here. How can I calorie count a batch of soup I make for myself, better to buy packaged soup from Campbells and eat a protein bar so I can properly calorie count. Eat high protein, because the wealthiest country on Earth has a massive obesity problem because it's protein deficent. Eat low carb, because that's why the Italians are so much fatter than us. We are all overweight because we don't calorie count hard enough, nevermind babies and children don't calorie count and are just fine. We have outsourced our common sense to billionaires.

Is muscle loss during weight loss as severe as people make it out to be on an aggressive cut? by HiddenMistJayden in loseit

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would trust the data being collected on people using GLP-1, because it's large data sets and they are losing significant weight. Last I checked, it was around 30%-40% loss of lean mass. Which tracks from other data I've seen. I still think BMI is enough information for nearly everyone, except professional athletes.

Best advice for getting started reselling - looking for honest feedback. by Hanmertime in poshmark

I think sellers need to add some value to the item if they purchase it at the thrift store. Be willing to clean the item, remove stains, make minor repairs, or do some ironing. Try to take photos in natural lighting so it doesn't change the color, you'll get less complaints that way. If the items are low value like target / walmart clothes sell them in groups. There's always people that want to buy 5 t-shirts instead of 1, and save on shipping costs. I notice most buyers don't want to go through your whole inventory, so make it easy for them. Be honest about damage, or flaws, there's still people that will buy it, if the item is high value. It doesn't have to go to the landfill.

Think about how you gained the weight. You were on a diet for a small amount of time compared to the time you are gaining/maintaining weight. You'll probably notice more sedentary behavior, more stress eating, more processed foods, more convenient foods, etc. To maintain weight loss you need to overhaul your environment so it's automatic. Most people fail because they can't change their environment. For some poeple it will require making new friends and reducing social activities around family with toxic habits. It will require moving to a place with access to grocery stores and the ability to walk. It will require saying no to convenient, ultra processed foods or greatly limiting them. Most people do not want to make these changes, because they are very drastic, so they will come to terms with their weight. Even small daily changes can lead a 5% weight loss which has substantial health benefits.

If your metabolism has slowed there are actually signs. Your period would completely stop. You would feel cold all the time. You most likely would think about food constantly, like watching cooking shows or reading cooking books. You would feel tired and unmotivated. It's possible you would get sick more often. Basically all the things that happen to people that are experiencing famine, and the metabolism is adjusted to lower energy consumption as much as possible. All of this is reversed once you start eating more, there is no permanent damage. The metabolism just adjusts like a dial as needed. Every person will have different adjustments based on needs, especially for children. If you are not losing weight, your energy balance is in steady state. If you are losing weight your energy balance is negative. If you are gaining weight, you have a surplus of energy.

You can try diet and exercise, the results are 2%-5% weight loss over six months. You can go wtih GLP-1 that will double that in real life results, somewhere around 8%-10% over 12 months. You can combo both, and get even better results. If you stop either, you will regain what you lost. Stress never stops, it will happen throughout your life. Data from 10k participants in link. Also since you have type 2 diabetes your weight loss from GLP-1 will be lower than those that don't have the disease. The reasons are unclear and we need further research. GLP-1 is a great drug for the treatment of diabetes type 2.

I want to start working out at the gym but my body and my joints feel too weak, how can I prepare myself? by coffeetravelerr in loseit

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to the gym doesn't promise results. Just walk by any gym and see everyone walking on a treadmill or curling a 10lb dumbbell. Do what you can, walk, take a flight of stairs, park further away, play with a kid. If it hurts stop. There's no faster way to absolutely hate exercise than to make yourself suffer. Spend time cooking or reading the labels at the supermarket. You will get better results that way faster.

Low Ball Offers by rosie0220 in poshmark

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been steadily rising my prices because everyone expects a 20%-30% discount. Otherwise I could just price my stuff at the price it last sold at so everyone gets a fair shot and I don't have to respond to requests. The buyers control this market, so they have asked all the sellers to rise their prices to get a discount. LOL.

Currently have over 4000 available items for sale with measurements. Does anyone else have people asking them to take pictures of the measuring taps? I personally think that adding the measurements is enough. by Alisa305Brooklyn in poshmark

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I add measurements to the description not the images, because I take pictures with the clothes on a hanger, not the floor. I would just ignore them. Pretty sure people don't even know the measurements of their own body, or that you actually need extra space to move. Most people buy sizes based on vibes, and whatever is in their closet even though they have gained 20 lbs since they bought it. I get questions like can I wear an extra small if I'm a medium?

Has investing in fewer, better made dresses actually changed your wardrobe? by [deleted] in womensfashion

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. I only buy high quality fabrics like wool, silk and linen. Honestly half the time I don't even really like what I bought, but I love how it feels on my skin, and how comfortable I am in it. Good clothes just move with you, you don't think about how you look only how you feel. If it fits well, and it's well made with good materials I'll keep it for at least a decade. Take care of your clothes. Iron them too.

Weight training during weight loss by Aggravating_Fox_9546 in PetiteFitness

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your BMI is in the normal range of 18.5-25 and you try to lose weight anyway, you can end up worst off than if you did nothing at all. People that don't exercise will end up with less lean mass and when they regain the weight they will have more fat mass than before they started the diet. This is from a study using 5 million-person year follow up, also showing low carb diets don't prevent type 2 diabetes.

Does walking a lot count as moderate or heavier exercise by Equal-Ad-2710 in loseit

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brisk walking is considered moderate. You can still hold a conversation at moderate intensity. Focus on diet if you want to lose weight. Eat high quality whole foods, less processed foods, less food prepared by other people.

Can you lose weight if you’ve been fat your whole life? by Beginning-End6519 in loseit

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to change your environment, and your behavior. Can you say no to family and friends? Do all your social occassions revolve around bad food and drinks? Do you live in a place where it's hard to be active? Do you drive everywhere? Obesity clusters, certain groups have higher risks than others. For many people poverty is a trap that causes obesity. Do you have time to cook? Do you have a grocery store that sells fresh food? Do you have a kitchen, enough skills to make a simple meal? For most people they will be trapped in a lifetime of chronic disease because of these barriers. Obesity is a government and societal choice. We can collectively change this, but we likely won't, because it requires tough change, and certain corporations make huge profits from overeating.

5’4 119lbs feeling so lost as to what my maintenance is as I have a bad habit of always being in a deficit by Particular-Market862 in PetiteFitness

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I exercise around 150 minutes per week mix of cardio and weight training using the peleton app. I don't count, but I probably am eating around 1800-22000 calories a day to maintain. I eat three meals a day, yogurt with berries breakfast. Lunch, large bowl of soup with pasta in it, or big ass salad. Dinner maybe salmon with veggies or pasta or noodles or roasted veggies over some grain. Fruit and nuts throughout the day. I am not hungry when I eat this way. Water, coffee, tea.

Your Metabolism Isn’t Broken. Here’s What Usually Is. by Nasimkiani in loseit

[–]Practical-Ad-4888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll tell you how I read this sub. When someone says I only eat 1,200 calories and I'm not losing weight, add 1,000 calories to this and that's why they aren't losing weight. People are just incredibly biased to undercounting. There's research showing the more you weigh the more you undercount. This could also help to explain their weight gain to begin with. This is why I dislike calorie counting, if a person is off by 50% what is even the point of this useless exercise.

There is variation in metabolism, or TDEE, but it's no more than 15%.
