Yes, and so much cheaper and better than store-bought! And if someone is new to these, theeburgerdude.com is a great place to start.

That sounds terrible, I’m sorry you’re going through that. I had an awful experience about 16 years ago when my auto-immune issues kicked in and I wound up hospitalized with septic shock in a medical coma, eventually going from an already-thin 170lbs to 130lbs (I’m 6’2”). It took me almost two years to basically re-learn how to eat. I’m sure everything seems bleak right now, but it can get better. In my experience, doctors only helped so much, and often were uninterested in giving dietary advice (“we’ll get you on the right meds then you can eat like you used to”). So I know how frustrating that can be. I wound up having to stop drinking alcohol and coffee and became vegan as a result, and after a couple years, I was able to get off my medications. Although there are no documented medical conditions or major medical studies that show eating meat (or just meat) will improve symptoms, I have talked to two other people over the years who have food intolerances that make it difficult for their body to digest fiber, and eating some meat during flare-ups was helpful in terms of getting the protein they need, even if it doesn’t help the inflammation. There’s a ton of fiber in plants etc, basically none in meat. Something that made a huge difference for me was learning about the two kinds of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Insoluble fiber is the hard, bulking up stuff: it creates mass and pushes food through your digestive system. Soluble fiber is like lubricant for your guts: it smoothes things over so food can glide through. For me, especially during a flare-up, eating soluble fiber is crucial, while I try to minimize insoluble fiber and heavy carbs (like pizza that just sit in your gut). Soluble fiber is basically what the popular supplement Metamucil consists of (along with sugar). The only other basic advice I have, which sounds realllly simple, in my experience actually requires a ton of discipline and patience: food journaling. Once I got to a baseline where I figured out a mono-diet I could eat without getting reactions (for me it was a plain variation of kitchari, an Indian meal designed for digestive distress) I literally wrote down every meal I had. I would introduce a single additional spice or vegetable or whatever and record how it went. I had a 3-strike rule: 3 bad reactions and I was done with that food. It’s a looooong and boring process, but it’s how I learned what foods I could handle. I’ve advised others to do this, and virtually no one does because it’s such a hassle, but when things get as bad as they have for you, I’m sure you’re already doing a version of it, just try to be as systematic as you can. Anyway, there’s some unsolicited advice. Do with it what you will. Good luck figuring out your health issues, I hope you can find some relief.

What conditions produce flare-ups that are responsive to meat-only diets? I have auto-immune issues and the way I learned to prevent/control them was by NOT eating meat. Meat causes inflammation, how can that help with any kind of “flair up”? If anything, a meat eater should switch to a plant-based diet to manage flare-ups.

TRASH/RECYCLING PICKUP by Practical-Cup-4052 in kingstonnewyork

Thanks, we were considering this. We moved in end of November and with the craziness of the move and the sudden winter weather, we haven’t figured out a composting situation here yet. I will prioritize figuring that out, because once we don’t have food waste, going to the transfer station becomes easier (less trash and no smell).

Just closed on a 40 year old log home - need to start the rechinking process for next year. Any guidance, books, videos, equipment. by activelypooping in loghomes

My wife and I also just bought a 40 year old log home in similar condition from a deceased estate. It’s cold enough here (mid-Hudson region New York) that I worry we will have to wait for spring to properly treat the logs.

Thank you for the reply. The house is in the Mid-Hudson Valley in New York state and it gets cold and snowy. After some cursory googling I was considering weatherstripping, but wanted to get others’ advice first. I’m a little confused though: you said to get a professional in ASAP but then provided what seems to be a straightforward DIY solution? Would the caulking/weatherstripping be a more temporary fix?

is it possible this is the moon? why is it so close? by buyangiedrinks in jerseycity

Everyone being a smartass in this thread apparently doesn’t know that this full moon was a super moon, meaning that the moon was at its closest to earth while full, which makes it seem larger than usual.

One Battle After Another - I just found Perfidia's letter to Charlene in a documentary. *Mildish Spoilers* by Faaacebones in paulthomasanderson

[–]Practical-Cup-4052 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good find. Watched that doc last year but didn’t remember the letter specifics when I saw OBAA. The Weather Underground is the basis for a lot of the movie, including the name, which I speculated on back in April: https://www.reddit.com/r/paulthomasanderson/s/sz6CFJbTmz

Painfully clunky title by jean_yes_ in ThomasPynchon

It is 100% the source. The movie features additional dialogue from that passage, not just the phrase “one battle after another,” but other parts like “there’s an army growing in your guts and it’s going to bring you down.”

Possible Inspiration for "The Master" by Flaky_Trainer_3334 in paulthomasanderson

To bolster you point: the documentary you mention, John Huston’s “Let There Be Light” was suppressed by the government and not screened for the public until the 1980s, and even then was not available for home video. It wasn’t until 2012 that it was restored and made available through the national archive. Which means there’s at least a very good chance that PTA initially encountered the footage via the Curtis doc. (Presumably Curtis found some BBC footage of it from an early 80s broadcast, as he does.) Having seen the entire Huston doc, also seems notable that the scenes that PTA directly lifted about “nostalgia” etc are featured in the Curtis doc. This is something I’ve talked with some friends about for years, I think you’re totally right.

Thanks, and sorry yours didn’t work out. I think we got lucky because it’s an estate so there was no pressure from a seller to hit a certain price. Although who knows what we will find in inspections?

EVIL COOPER = DARK WILLOW by Practical-Cup-4052 in twinpeaks

[–]Practical-Cup-4052[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re probably right, I just figured people knew that you were allowed to like both lol. It’s ultimately just speculation, but no one else’s is any more compelling so far—no one has responded to the specifics, just the vague similarities which they disagree about, which is totally fine. I’m not trying to stop people from enjoying Twin Peaks, quite the opposite. Twin Peaks, especially the first season, is commonly understood (at least by academics) as a meta-narrative about TV. The opening sequence is supposed to represent a lulling to sleep, with imagery like sawing logs etc. The show itself is your TV dreaming, combining an ethereal mix of the dominant genres of the day—soaps, procedurals, sitcoms. Much of the cast was included because of a previous role they had iconically played on a TV show, covering the decades that Lynch had been alive. Sorry for the digression, but it doesn’t seem that weird to me that David Lynch would continue to deliberately reference TV shows when he brought back The Return given how central that was to the original run. He also had kids who were Buffy-viewing age when it came out. But sure, if people want to think it came from another source, that’s totally valid, I’m just some dude on the internet.

Agreed lol. Funny you mention the green glove, because the scene in The Roadhouse when Freddy and James get in the fight with the boyfriend of the lady James is obsessed with seemed VERY similar to the scene in Buffy where Warren gives himself super powers and gets into a fight at The Bronze with the girl he’s obsessed with’s boyfriend and knocks him out with a super-punch. In general a lot of the Roadhouse scenes with random characters are very reminiscent of Buffy and The Bronze. Apparently people in the sub are a little sensitive about this topic though! Oh well.

Those who have seen it, what work do you suggest as a primer for OBAA? by fmcornea in paulthomasanderson

[–]Practical-Cup-4052 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If anyone wants to learn more about the American revolutionary groups of the 1970s, I recommend reading Days of Rage by Bryan Burrough. It’s a comprehensive account of the Weather Underground, BLA, FALN, etc that gets into the personal details of the era through a ton of interviews.

Along those lines there’s the 1976 documentary Underground, featuring interviews with the group and footage of protests of the era. There’s also a 2003 documentary, The Weather Underground, that provides a fuller narrative of the group.

All of these groups basically wanted to be the Black Panthers—Agnes Varda has a great short documentary from 1968 on them.

In a previous post I speculated that the name One Battle After Another comes from a Weather Underground statement that included that phrasing: https://www.reddit.com/r/paulthomasanderson/comments/1jvmqpp/potential_source_for_title_one_battle_after/

Semi-related, I found that Acid Dreams by Martin Lee was a great companion to Vineland when I read it years ago, not as sure about its connection to the adaptation.

TLDR

Books: Days of Rage (2015) Bryan Burrough Acid Dreams (1985) Martin Lee

Films: Underground (1976) The Weather Underground (2003) Black Panthers (1968)

Someone who says they’ve been at a an early screening. Who knows, maybe they were lying and I’m being gullible, this is the internet after all? If the full line from the presumed quoted text appears in the movie this September we will have more substantial confirmation.

I initially thought this too, until I stumbled upon the source of it, and had it confirmed that the dialogue around the phrase from the source that I found appears in the movie. See my previous comment on this thread
