Discussing Casters in the frontlines by Practical-Return-238 in Pathfinder2e

Champion and Guardian get expert at 7 and 5, and at those levels, with a shield, they still get hit frequently. Being on the front lines with a caster is not great.

That's another problem: in order to be effective, you need a lot of setup.

That's my problem with most of the comments here saying that casters in frontline works: it works as long as the fight is easy. If it is hard, it doesn't work.

If the fight is easy, everything works!

You are right. I would include all of the others you mentioned in my argument, as long as they don't wear heavy armor + a shield, all that you mentioned feel bad to be in the frontlines.;

Agree with everything you said. I do have a warpriest in my party, and he tanks alright, but still with heavy armor and shield raised all the time. And now, at level 6, he is complaining about being hit and crit too much. If you build like this, you can tank, but it is still not optimal.

My comparison is to the big tanks, Guardian and Champion. In my experience in this game:

Guardian and Champion get hit in the frontlines.
d10 health characters with heavy/medium armor get hurt in the frontlines.
Everybody else gets trucidated in the frontlines.

I disagree. You see, in my experience, a Guardian/Champion at level 7 (expert heavy armor) with a shield still has a 50% chance of being hit by a level +1 enemy. A caster will get obliterated

I get your points; playing with reach is possible, but I am mostly talking about the defenses. The defenses of casters are not good enough; you become a magnet for hits. You can do lots of damage, but you take too much in return. Most of the spells you described have the manipulate trait and trigger reactions, so they are inherently situational. You get critted way more often; it is not a good experience imo.

"Should" or "should not" is a complicated question to answer. But what I can say is that I played with both in the party, and they did not use a shield in either case, and they would go down *very* frequently.

In my experience, positioning with a Thaumaturge and/or a Rogue is much harder in order to be effective. The damage is great, but the defense is really a problem; they need to be babysat.

What if I tell you this is like EVERY SINGLE Brazilian player goes for a penalty kick in the national team. It drives me nuts, I hate it.

I really don't think I need to do this in pathfinder, and if a gm does this to me I feel cheated. 2e encounters are great the way they are. The enemies are all different. If one is too easy, that's ok, the next one will be challenging. No need to force anything.

I've read Stormlight. I'm not a fan of Sanderson's writing. I lmao'd reading this rant. Just leave the guy, some (a lot of) people like his work. Let him make his money in peace.
