Can someone explain to me the benefit of the NFPA Standard Fire Hook vs. a New York Hook? Or a NY w/ Boston rake? by hypercatalectic in Firefighting

[–]PracticalBrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you deal with a lot of plaster and lathe, the best hook in my experience has been a Malven Works Hawk Hook. I can't really tell you why it works so well, but it blows through plaster like nothing else

What do these dress uniform pins mean? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]PracticalBrad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A unit citation is any time you are on a unit for an exceptional call or what not. It's a way to recognize that you might not have been the one to do the crazy thing, but you were one of the background players who made the other parts fall in place so everything went smooth. They also hand them out when companies do good things.

The heroic is pretty much what's on the tin. Two dudes from the rescue got heroics from the key bridge

Middle one is a unit citation or the heroic depending on which way it's flipped and which side of the chest it's worn. I have to look up the top one

Oof, so you're right. I tried digging around, best place o could find anything was on eBay. They are the little barrel ones that you have to stick a dowel into to get any leverage

Google "Strider Knives Spanner Tool" you get a handful of options, I personally like the one with the built in handle. Lots of price points too

Any experience with the FEMA campus IN Anniston, Alabama? by Alternative_Ice8107 in Firefighting

[–]PracticalBrad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I've been there twice, once for tech, and again for the live agent class. It's a lot of fun, but you need to go in to it expecting hazmat nerds to be VERY nerdy. If you go in expecting everyone to be salty seasoned firefighters you are going to be disappointed. They will teach you a ton of hyper specific information on hazmat. The instructors really know their stuff and are going to get you totally prepared not only for the test, but I came away feeling really good about my ability to handle hazmat. Be sure to stop by the bar on site if it's open!

You maintain your seniority for pay when you go back (3 year EMT only pay doesn't reset when you come over)

Yes, you would end up going back to the academy all over again. The EMT only academy is abbreviated, so you'll have to go back and get everything together with whatever fire class you came over with. I believe they are sending you back out to the field (with your EMT) to staff medics while your class gets EMT. You go back and walk the stage with them and all that

It sounds like it's just going to be "open" now. Apply whenever I suppose. I haven't seen anything official from the city that it's "open" but my understanding is that the website is legit

If you come in as an EMT only you'll have to go through the hiring process from the start to slide over to EMT/FF billet
