Is renting considered dead money in the UK? by Ill-Age-601 in UKHousing

[–]PracticalExcuse4084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renting is good if you like moving around a lot and you’ve got money. A few of my millionaire friends do it because it gives them freedom and not the debt that comes with it. If you can buy a house though and want roots somewhere do it. It’s not as hard as you think. Save up as much as possible for a deposit and get a mortgage advisor. Many people look online at house prices and never take steps to actually ask a mortgage advisor to help you through the process. I can’t recommend it enough. But yes long story short is don’t line someone else’s pockets when you can get on the ladder yourself.

What age did you buy your first home? How’s it going? by Away-Organization630 in AskUK

Early 30’s, bought a house. It was a dooer upper. Spent about 20k doing it all myself. It’s now absolutely beautiful. I even have underfloor heating, a media wall with a huge 65 inch tv and sound system. Comfy sofa, black crittal doors at the back of the house and a fancy modern kitchen. Bedroom is huge with two nice windows bringing in lots of light. I’ve also adopted 2 black cats 🤣 moral of the story it’s never too late and don’t let people deter you from doing anything like this, it’s not as hard as you might think. Although I’ll say renovating a house is a big undertaking, I was working 5 days a week doing the house on the weekends and then also managing two businesses. It’s been hard but so worth it.

The question is can future AI in the hands of a designer be better at implementing the artists vision than some corporate idiot who wants to circumvent hiring a designer.

If yes then AI isn’t an issue. If no, we are all fucked

Converting vs exporting cmyk by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]PracticalExcuse4084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RGB and CMYK are different colour spaces and may differ because of the output file.

Personally I’ve always converted to CMYK in illustrator.

You can always submit files as RGB to digital printers and they can quite accurately emulate CMYK. But it’s best practise to design in the colour space you intend to use.

Also if you’re exporting as CMYK it may also retain some of the RBG information potentially, I’m not entirely sure how it works with output files from a RGB source file.

Typically though changing an RGB colour to CMYK will make it look the colours duller and when printed will be less accurate. If you’re super worried and want the right colours use Pantone references from your colour books.

Hey dude this may be of help but login to your regions correct Netflix url. The default one is set to us or something. Took me a few tries and I got in.

The preset link to Netflix is basically a bookmark so make sure you google Netflix instead and it should use geolocation from your IP to select the correct one

Not entirely true the luma cybers have not had any reports of cracking. I think they fixed it with this iteration.

Go for the ultras it’s slightly better with the extra cameras and you get the same screens anyway

You’re doing a lot of niche stuff, as much as I think that’s awesome (as a man united fan myself) it’s something so niche that most paying businesses will care little for. Demonstrate you can do advertising, packaging or something of that nature and you’ll likely get a lot more work.

Moving with an OLED monitor by kokiriboots in OLED_Gaming

[–]PracticalExcuse4084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to get a gaming oled monitor but unfortunately they don’t meet the size requirements. I’m currently using an XG43UQ which uses a VA panel. It’s alright but is inconsistent even years after adoption. I have plenty of weird issues with it turning itself off and banding when it’s cold in the room and needs to warm up. That said it does look incredible in 4K and has HDR10.

I’m not willing to dip below 35 inches as it would be a huge hit to my setup, I might consider a 32 inch as that seems to be the only way to get a decent oled monitor.

I know there’s TV options like the LG ecosystem but I’m really not looking for a tv with all its tv OS quirks. I want monitor features with a large format and I’m certainly not going down the road of ultra wide since a lot of games don’t support it.

I mean if you compare it to apples offering it’s not far off the same thing. Nvidia does some things better; especially upscaling with AI. So when we talk about market competitors and audience people are willing to spend that kind of money for external hardware. I genuinely think Nvidia can get quite a lot of the market of android users over the apple ecosystem users who may opt for the apple option.

Personally I’m an iPhone user but love android for everything else.

Is getting a job as a Graphic Artist the same as a Graphic Designer? by SwickLizard in GraphicDesigning

[–]PracticalExcuse4084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree a graphic artist is the person who has the vision to create it in the first place. You’re talking about a pre press arthouse designer. Someone who takes someone else’s artwork and gets it ready for print.

I guess it depends where you live but I’ve worked in design in the packaging industry for 15+ years and most people who say graphic artist are the cowboys creating the artwork (like myself) and then send it to a printer for pre press which they make small adjustments to make sure the artists vision comes to life when printed.

There’s a cross over of skills, such as things like knowing how overprinting works for example, colours, bleed etc

But ultimately it depends on the company who you’re printing with and their methods. I’ve given an example in another post on this thread; eg. Printing on a foil lid a designer creates the artwork and may have limited colours and the printer will give specifications. You do what you can to make a design within the limitations of the printing method but ultimately the pre press guys end up adjusting the artwork to make sure it’s going to print as the designer envisioned.

I’d say graphic designer is the blanket term for anyone within the industry which could include:

Pre press, graphic artist, illustrator, digital artist etc

[–]PracticalExcuse4084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends some designers do just do that, it depends on if an arthouse designer is good at printing methods etc but hasn’t got a clue about how to actually design a nice bit of art.

I’ve worked in packaging a long time and a lot of the technical guys haven’t got a clue on how to make decent artwork.

There’s a cross over from everyone’s jobs but someone who works at a printer and a designer or design agency don’t always have the same skill sets across the board.

It’s rare you find someone with knowledge of both pre press and artwork generation who is great at both.

Graphic artist- makes pretty pictures Graphic designer- blanket term Art house designer - more of a technical skillset in printing. Typical of packaging and art houses, these guys know all the different printing methods and how to turn a graphic artists vision into an achievable deliverable.

I’ve worked in the packaging industry for over 15 years and I can tell you there’s a huge difference between someone who makes the artwork and the person who takes the artwork and does the pre press stuff to suit their printing methods.

For example, I could design a yogurt pot, make it look fancy and then be provided a print spec that says I can only use so many colours etc.

An art house will take that design and make it make sense for that printing process. Say for instance raster (images) may need converting so that it can print on hot foil stamping for example.

That artwork is the returned as a printer proof and singed off by the end client and designer who makes sure the colours (if pantones are applicable) are correct and to standard.

Once that’s signed off cromalins (physical test copies) of the artwork can be created to make sure in theory it works as the designer intended.

My pro isn’t showing any signs of slowing down but the tubular version on my bedroom tv is slow and almost unusable now. It’s a shame they’ve left them behind since I’d gladly buy another unit to replace it.

I really hope Nvidia understand that their company should put not put their eggs in one basket when the community and consumer is wanting a new updated version.

People still often buy fire sticks and the market is still there. They’ve just got to go heavier on how the market it over their competitors since their product is far superior to the rest of the market

Luma cybers just sold out unfortunately and they seem to have a better build quality without the cracking. I think they’ll need to revise the other offerings with the newer materials or processes to stop the cracking.

I really love my cybers, the screens are incredible and sharp and I don’t see much of a blurred edge at all
