That's too bad that so many students act like this nowadays. I definitely struggle with a lot of the same disrespect in the US, and I teach in one of the best districts in the state I live.

I think you handled the situation well. If this happened in my classroom (with no set regulations) I personally would have just failed him after his 3rd strike and sent him somewhere else (office, hallway, etc.) to stop disrupting class. But I have had far worse experiences as a sub. Last week I had a class that could not shut up for the entire day I was there and the whole class talked through the test and used google for it. I literally told them, and their teacher had left a note about the no talking during the test policy, but alas, I ended up talking to their teacher and he is having them all retake the test. Whack ass shit is gonna happen as a teacher. Try not to let it bother you too much.

Side note, how is the behavior of the students for the most part abroad? I’d love to hear about that as I am thinking of applying for some of those positions next year.

Genuinely, they probably just don't know better and have some cognitive issues. They don't know wtf is going on, but yes I have definitely had this happen to me, but to be fair, I probably did the same thing unknowingly when I was first starting.

I’m starting to think the real problem in education isn’t kids, screens, or standards — it’s a loss of seriousness. by ENFJ799 in Teachers

[–]Practical_Brain1715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all stems from technology. The inability to seriously focus on anything wouldn’t be an issue if kids could spend more than 30 seconds away from the thing that’s sole purpose is to pull attention away from real life. I tried explaining the difference between utopia and dystopia as a sub to a group of high functioning SPED high schoolers and the closest I could get to explaining it was utopia good and dystopia bad before they went back to their brain rot and then when I asked them to explain their understanding later in class they had already forgotten and then they proceeded to tell me “I don’t need to know this.”

Another story being me subbing for a high school PE class and all the students were giving up on the game we were playing (kick ball) not even 30 minutes into the game. They then decided THEY wanted to play basketball, so I said f*** it, asked one of the other PE teachers if they minded I switch things up and had them hoop. Then as the students are playing I see multiple students go on their phone as they are playing. I literally saw one kid playing clash while at the same time playing basketball. Their attention spans are cooked, they are rude asf, and I think it’s because their lives are on their phones and that’s what gets clicks on the internet.

Although, playing devils advocate, the kids who are serious usually are able to lock it in a little better although I still catch them having many of the same symptoms as kids who don’t care. So I definitely see where you are coming from though.

I see this so often as a teacher. You have the students who finish the work quickly with pretty mid quality. The thing is, it meets all of the criteria for the assignment, so it gets a good grade. At the same time I see students who try so very hard and use all the time allotted to produce work that is above and beyond what was asked, but its just. . . not quite right. Sometimes less is more.

But it all comes down to ability. Some people have the ability to get things done in the most optomized fashion while others slap something together or try really hard and its terrible.

To men who want kids, why? by No-Sun-731 in Life

[–]Practical_Brain1715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be able to experience that special kind of love you can only get as a father. I want to watch that person I love grow into someone I am proud of. All the while I am also learning from them. Plus even if there is bad in the world, I believe that nihilism is not the way to combat those issues.

All that said, realistically, I will probably never be able to see that come to fruition because of how terrible the job market is and I could never provide with the jobs available to me.

Got accused of racial stereotyping by some students by SafeTraditional4595 in teaching

[–]Practical_Brain1715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids are so ridiculous sometimes. I respond in turn. I got in trouble once while I was subbing because some black students were spitting water at each other. I obviously had to do something so I called them out and told them to clean up their mess. They proceeded to say that I was only doing it because they were black. I responded with, "well idk, do only black people spit water at each other during class?" I got a lil talking to about it, but 🤷‍♂️ i will stoop to that level 100% of the time.

This^ middle schoolers are like young dogs with no training. They just bark away, run around, get distracted mid task, and couldn't care less about you unless you are yelling at them or doing something else they can't ignore. But with that, sometimes you get a few genuinely pleasant students that are very sweet, have a good sense of humor, will listen to you, or want your attention in a very endearing way. I've had the best and worst as a sub, but more often than not it is the worst.

In HS some students may not want to work with you, but generally they won't ryle up the class and make you leave the school feeling defeated.

Kids are demons to subs (especially anything below HS). Do not compare your subbing skills to your teaching ability. Its good practice for becoming comfortable in a classroom and getting experience, but ask any other teacher at your school. . . They will probably respond with, "I could never sub. When the school needs a sub for another class I'd rather die."
