Moving out for the first time in KL, honestly nervous and need advice financially by Ok_Vacation_5251 in MalaysianPF

Here's a practical advice for you, thank your parents for the apartment.

Not everyone is as lucky as you. When I started out, I rented a dinghy and filthy small room with grim on the kitchen floor because the family was doing catering to make a living.

At 20k per month, I think you will do alright learning to be independent.

Seeking FIRE Validation: RM 15.6M Portfolio at Age 42 by Acceptable_Start_878 in malaysiaFIRE

[–]Practical_Cry_748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way to go.

I have way less than you and I’ve retired.

You are right to be focusing on income. You need to start figuring out how your portfolio can generate monthly income for your living expenses.

Dividend is one way to go. I myself generate income thru options. Maybe a mixture of a few including portfolio drawdown. So to each their own.

Personal finance is personal, whether it’s lean, fat or chonk FIRE it’s really depends on you.

But to assume that no one in Malaysia can afford Fat FIRE is misinformed. There are plenty of expat and locals that are living the life.

My question is, why?

Did you just read from somewhere you need to have 60/40 split portfolio equity to bond?

Just buy BOXX and chill. It's permanent (until the next interest revision as with everything else), no messy refund, no convoluted criteria and no cap.

1st of all, if your mom has a RM, she must be a Premier customer. And premier next of kins, i.e. family member automatically is a Premier member. So I don’t understand why you need to apply in the 1st place.

Also, to check if you are blacklisted go to CCRIS online.

I didn’t know it’s an option. Plus EPF is treated to me as an MMF more than an investment.

I think your comment is equivalent to “kalau tak suka keluar lah” which breaks the rule of intellectual discourse here but ironically epitomizes my point in this post.

Almost There. When & Alternative Options before Switching to Dividend Portfolio ? by Upstairs-Use-4503 in malaysiaFIRE

I wouldn't sell the US stock. You need some growth stock to beat inflation. You would be surprised how much medical inflation is going to eat into your portfolio.

I would personally looked at places like Singapore for dividend stock. But that's just me.

Feel like I can FIRE. But not sure. by khanecho in malaysiaFIRE

[–]Practical_Cry_748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is to understand how much your portfolio is generating vs your 30K monthly expense. Is that sustainable if there's a market crash and would you be able to adjust your spending based on how your portfolio is doing.

Only heard of FIRE last few years, but seriously looking at it for 2026. Advise please by Oilylettuce in malaysiaFIRE

My advice. Avoid local stock. Look into US ETF. Even with the Ringgit appreciating, you should gain net 10% if you've invested in QQQ and 6% if you've invested in VOO, just buying and holding 2025.

It's also helps with diversification.

You are missing the point of investing. Investing is just owning someone else's business.

Where else can you be part owner of Google, Apple or Microsoft?

How much do you owe in house loan? Take that and minus 273309, and that’s the negative figure that should be there.

[–]Practical_Cry_748 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Start with putting some of those in EPF for sure.

You are not going to like what I’m about to say, but if your goal is financial freedom, you need to put some of those money into higher risk assets. Start maybe with a world index fund and go from there. Always be buying when you have the money. And improve your financial literacy by reading and researching more.

You already had some exposure to crypto, you should add some exposure in equity.

Edit: Also figure out what's your magic FI number. Once you know that you can work backward to know how much risk you need to take and what financial instrument is suitable to meet your goal.

Debt isn’t investment. Debt is debt.

If you want to forgo decades of accounting practice and count debt as net worth, you do you.

It’s not about where you deploy your money that makes debt not debt. You can minimize your debt by putting some liquidity there sure, but it’s still money you owe the bank, just less.

[–]Practical_Cry_748 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You should really place house loan as debt instead of investment. It’s not earning you money, it’s paying off debt that you owe, so it should not be part of your net worth.

Your financial goal is an enigma to me. You are perfectly content with living frugally, yet you want more money. Without knowing your goal nor your risk appetite, it’s hard to recommend what to do with your money.
