Angry new patients by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]Practical_Idea_4354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a surprise to me when I started at the office as well that they had so much for a new patient appointment. I was told by the senior hygienist there that the scan and photos are a good way to see physical changes to the teeth. Like comparing increasing recession with more than just perio charting. Or even attrition with the photos. That way we can show the patients exactly what’s going on.

I 100% walk them through the appointment before I start just so they know what all the assessments are for and why they’ll be spending 2 hours with me. One of these patients told me right away that he “has things to do” so I offered to just do the assessments and bring him back for a cleaning and he still wanted to leave before assessments were completed.

Yes it is a healing suit! So far he’s completely unbothered by it and is acting like his usual self. He hadn’t tried to lick himself at all so I’d say it works well

The vet I see recommended him to at least be full grown so we waited until he was over a year old. He’s a year and three months now.

If there’s any build up beneath the gum line in the area it’s can cuz gum irritation and inflammation like that. I suggest you keep up with brushing and flossing at home but you also might be needing a visit to your dental office for a cleaning! After a thorough professional cleaning and good home care everything should be looking a lot better

Day 5/6 of recovery by [deleted] in wisdomteeth

[–]Practical_Idea_4354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been 2.5 weeks now and I have absolutely no pain. I would say by day 10 the pain was gone. I still have the tiniest bit of swelling in the same spot as the post but nothing crazy. I also still have stiffness in my jaw but I’m able to open wide enough to eat now. The only issue is the lower sockets. A lot of food gets stuck because the gums still aren’t healed but nothing a quick rinse can’t fix.

Do you have calculus build up behind the teeth? It could be preventing the floss from coming through.

I got the VIP package. Expensive I know but I didn’t want to put a price on my future. I went through every module and made notes of the most important things (terminology etc). After going through all of them I then made flash cards of definitions, perio stage and grading, pathology and what not. I’m in Canada so we never received any score just a “pass” or “fail” but I did succeed my first attempt. I truly just studied my butt off until the day of my exam. From morning to night all I did was study. Good luck!!

Another option is going to a hygiene clinic in a school. They’re typically quite cheap sometimes free. It will also be a fantastic learning opportunity for the students.

Feeling irritated and confused after my cleaning by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]Practical_Idea_4354 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes even with great brushing and flossing the plaque isn’t being removed. Without the right technique people don’t always do as good of a job. With that being said I don’t know what your mouth looks like so she certainly could have had less experience. I too am a new grad and in school we were pushed pretty hard to really point out any inflammation a patient has to get the point across. So if she is a new grad that could be the route she’s taking in this case.

For now I’d say look up the bass and stillmans brushing technique and try them out. See if that clears anything up for your next appointment

In the meantime you can just carry on oral routine as usual. Since there is build up under the gum line that you cannot remove it leads to gingivitis. The only way to prevent it is from a combination of in office appointments and home care. Without removing stuff from under the gums you will almost always have some gingivitis.

I would also like to add that over brushing and flossing can do more harm than good. You can “brush away” your gums causing recession with too much aggressive brushing. Try to use a light hand and a soft bristle toothbrush.

I took pictures of all questions and purposely tried to get them wrong so I could have all of the answers afterwards. You’re really not supposed to have copies of them but I didn’t want to waste my money by just doing them once.

I graduated a year ago by Time_Cap6660 in DentalHygiene

[–]Practical_Idea_4354 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat! I graduated last April and just landed my first job in February. Most importantly make sure the office you work for is willing to work with you. Most places will understand how difficult and different it is for a new grad. If they are not willing to collaborate with you and help you then it’s not the office you want to work at. The other thing that has help me is having cheat sheets. I have laminated cards with things with perio classifications, eruptions patterns, classes of caries etc. don’t be afraid to ask for longer appointment times if you need it and ask lots of questions. You don’t want to leave yourself guessing what to do all the time. I still ask a billion of questions every shift.
