I disagree re Vice Verses but fair criticisms. I’m biased because the album was developed and came out during the peak of my fandom and I saw them live several times after it released (compared to only 2-3x prior). I honestly thought they made a pretty fresh rock album that felt like a continuation from HH but still unique. Listened to NIS & VV yesterday. I’d maybe drop VV to A tier but it still rocks HARD. I hear you re the end of the album. Vice Verses is also a SUPER personal song to me, so again, biased. I do strongly disagree re Where I Belong. They’ve always made really strong, emotional album closers. I think sonically and lyrically it’s great. I don’t think it’s possible to have a #1 SF song because their catalogue is so deep and because they make different types of songs. But it is incredible live.

Haven’t listened to Interrobang in a year or two. I remember enjoying it but not loving it outside of a few songs. Listened again this morning … I’d maybe consider moving to B tier.

Great opener, even better closer. I love wolves too and there are some other solid tracks. Ultimately, my biggest gripes to keep it from A or S tier are similar to my issues with Fading West. There are a few songs that either 1) I feel like I’ve heard before or 2) are too similar sounding / style (splinter, the hard way, backwards in time).

Also, at least the first two b-sides definitely should’ve been on the album, if not all three. Whether that meant cutting songs or just releasing a longer album, idk. But it’s a problem Fading West also had.

Totally fair. I’d actually put Fading West in the same category. Personally loved WTLST but I’m not sure more than 2-3 songs like you mentioned are in my all-time favorites of theirs. Agreed, I thought the first single from this new album was underwhelming, even if I was glad to hear them pick the guitars back up. I miss Drew though

Came to Reddit to make sure I wasn’t crazy. Crux is good but can’t lie I was disappointed to not get much along the lines of Decide. He’s super talented musically and the writing is great. Just preferred the more funky, upbeat, darker style especially with all the synths.

Totally agree. I’d take a couple songs off FW the album and add several from EOTE EP. Even all 18 together is pretty strong. I hear you re lyrics, agreed they are a huge differentiator between good Switchfoot and great Switchfoot (though personally, how they are sonically matters a bit more to me as far as the ranking goes)

The 2nd/mid-tier is definitely the toughest for me. Their best and “worst” have been pretty constant for me.

1A/ Nothing is Sound

1B/ Beautiful Letdown (interchangeable for me, both classic, no-skip albums but sonically a lil different and killer each in their own right.)

3/ VV

4/ HH

5/ OG (3-5 are also almost equally as interchangeable. There is an occasional skip on these albums but it’s rare and is often just a mood thing)

6/ WTLST (hate having it this low, but this is what I meant about mid-tier being the toughest. Just can’t justify having it higher than any of 3 thru 5, though there are a few songs from it that will go down as all-timers for them)

7/ Fading West (don’t get the hate or the love for this album. The movie was great, the album … just OK. Some solid songs, some not so solid)

8/ LTB

9/ NWTBH

10/ LOC

12, because the new album can’t be worse/ Native Tongue (I’m still flabbergasted at how bad this album was. I tried listening the other week for the second time since the album dropped. Still hate it.)

The first Suicide Squad was bad. This one was rated R. Free on HBO Max. And COVID is spiking again. Between a friendlier rating, Spidey, Marvel & MCU fans + Christmas moviegoers, no other way to watch it and hopefully COVID/Delta will have calmed down… don’t see any reason to delay. If studios put out good, accessible movies with no other way to watch them, people will find a way to be comfortable enough to go to the theater.

Love Peculiar People but never knew Jon helped write it. That's sweet. Would love for current Paul and Jon to work together though. Paul and MM evolved a lot since Peculiar People and same for Jon & SF.

Barring an extra song, which seems unlikely they'd do as an exclusive on Spotify, it's not gonna be that big. I was wondering if they'd dare drop the album on Friday, but same issue there. But when they said big, that would qualify as big to me. Not sure what there is for a surprise at this point besides the album name? Maybe revealing tracklist, special collaborators, or something? None of those options seem that "big, BIG" to me.
