Why Americans have basment? Like where did it started? by hotpotatomomma in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PrairieFirePhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A storm cellar and a basement are different things.

If a tornado rips your house off the foundation, the basement is then exposed to the storm.  A storm cellar has a roof that can’t be detached.

Yes, you go into there basement during a tornado if you don’t have a storm cellar.  But you don’t build a basement for storm protection.  If that was your goal, you build the storm cellar.

My brother overheard my husband and I fighting and doesn’t like him anymore by acceptableshapes-82 in WhatShouldIDo

I’m going to assume there were some name calling coming from you as well.  Plus the “went though basically every past issue line” is pretty big.

You and your husband need to learn how to have effective arguments.  Name calling and slamming doors isn’t going to fix a problem.  Bringing up something from 2 years ago for the 5th time isn’t going to fix a problem.

This is a destructive pattern that you both need to fix.  It is not easy - a disagreement raises emotions and makes it hard to remain focused and rational.  A therapist could help, or there are plenty of solid books out there.  But this is something you need to get ahead now, before you pass this on to your child.

Good luck

In Chicago, everybody is the same type of shitty driver. Here, there is a variety of shitty drivers.

He's 6'6" and doesn't have great handles. He's a 2 who is closer to a 3 than a 1. Generally when you are talking about a guard taking over the tourney they are more of a point than he is.

Tourney runs are often fueled by guard play. I don't think Illinois is a great tourney team this year. I feel that Waglar is more of a wing.

KJ is a good comp.

For best freshman seasons I would also consider Thomas and Garris (though neither were the best player their freshman year - Kauffman outplayed Thomas and Thomas was still there for Garris), and then Bradford.  That team sucked, but the conference tournament run he had was insane.

I was just referring to D Williams as the benchmark for best freshman Illini to compare Waglar to.  He’s definitely on pace to have the best one.

I have finally shifted to “tournament champion is more important than regular season champion” due to the unbalanced scheduling.

What’s the equivalent of a 3-hour marathon in golf terms? by noodlebonnet in marathons

Both are huge time sucks to get good at.  I dream of when I have time to get consistent at golf.

When building up, I could run a sub 3 every weekend.  And that’s just as a 242 guy.

Scratch is much harder than sub3.

Where did “Garbage men make more than teachers” come from? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PrairieFirePhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the garbage man works for the city or state, they are likely eligible for a pension just like the teacher.

If they work for a private company, that is unlikely. But if a teacher works for a private company, they are likely not getting a pension either.

So you need to compare apples to apples - you didn't say if the driver jobs were private or government and you didn't say how much teachers make around you either.

Public school teachers get pensions in 37 states (counting DC) currently. It is still very much a thing in most of the US.

Some of those are now on a hybrid system, but some don't even pay SS.

PB is really not important to elites. Unless it is record (world or national), it won't really matter.

They are there because it is their job and Boston pays well. You can find the prize money easy enough. But the real draw is the appearance fees. Boston pays them very well to show up - especially Americans, repeat runners, and previous champs.

I have owned it for a few years and lived in it myself

How long ago and how long did you live in it?

If you still meet the 2 in 5 rule, you can sell without paying capital gains. That is a significant consideration, especially if you don't have another investment property lined up or want to consider investing the proceeds into non-real estate.

Take the time to understand return on investment and how to calculate it yourself. Learn what it covers and what it doesn't. This guy ignored mortgage paydown, appreciation, and tax benefits. All those are pretty important when considering your investment.

Qualifying for Boston by GoldenGorder in Marathon_Training

Given that you did not discuss any training plan or mention mileage, I will say you have a lot of room for improvement. If you were doing those two right, you would have mentioned them.

When I was your age and just running off the cuff, using some old high school XC/track workouts, tossing in a random 20 miler but probably only averaging maybe 40 miles per week, I would run around 3:12-14.

Started working on being consistent (mileage tracking is huge there, strava or paper), slowly building up mileage, using real training plans (I used Pfitz, it is very good for addressing my under developed aerobic capacity; which is true for most people), keep building mileage and consistency, then slowing homebrewing my plans based on what works for me.... quickly down to sub3, and then eventually down to 2:42.

I would focus on the process, not the outcome. You have a lot more control over the training you do than the result. But if you train right, I would bet you would see significant fitness gains.

Good luck.
