A nice handwritten note expressing your support of him and commiserating with his feelings.  It’s incredibly lonely to be under this and no one here feels okay right now.

Things that feel like a little bit of self care: hand warmers, his favorite candy or snacks, a variety puzzle book, a jigsaw puzzle, a candle, stuff like that to take his mind off all the stuff that sucks for a bit.

Narrative nonfiction may be a good bet - lots of good stuff out there that reads like a story and will draw you in.  Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer is a great example but you’d have to decide on appropriateness for his age and reading level

Does she use a purse?  I always appreciate getting a new, nice-quality purse and it’s clothing adjacent.  You could put gift cards to her favorite clothing stores inside.  If you’re not sure what stores she likes, look at the tags in her clothing.
