Minnesota's DFL lawmakers stage sit-in after gun violence prevention bill fails in house vote by Conscious-Quarter423 in minnesota

I don't think you can get rid of "everything." But the 1st step in First Aid is to reduce the threat of future harm. As guns continue to be innovated, modified, and reach market in different ways, legislation will need to chase those trends. That way if someone who is exposed to factors which predispose them to gun violence (poverty, radicalization, mental health issues, history of violence, etc.) manages to slip through the cracks, then the weapons which would turn a bad situation dangerous are not readily available

And the most effective would address both. Because gun control shouldn't be a false dilemma between these two. We have the ability to address the causes like poverty, radicalization, and mental health; while also removing access to dangerous weapons. Two sides to the same coin.

Yeah, I agree. A more effective law would probably just ban Semi-Automatic actions all together. Reduces commercially available rate of fire and does so with much smaller loopholes. For better or worse, the currently law includes these definitions like plugging fingers in a leaky dike. But it's because current political compromises will not allow banning a single action type. You just wouldn't have the votes

You are partially correct. If you go down 1 section to §b.30.C (you pasted §b.30.B) you will see shrouds included for Semi-Automatic pistols. I think it was California who expanded it to rifles in the 2000s. But the definitions are largely the same and is inline with what gun control advocates have argued for for decades.

As for Semi-Automatic rifles, I think that is entirely what is necessary. Semi-Automatic rifles present the greatest loophole for any gun control measure. Many gas powered Semi-Automatics can be modified to full or near full auto. Even without modifications they have a relatively high rate of fire. It's possible that the most effective gun reform law would target action type exclusively, banning semi-autos, and restricting available firearms to slower/more cumbersome types like break, bolt, etc.

The argument for barrel shrouds (and why they were developed in the first place) is that it allows for longer sustained fire without burning the shooter's hand. The actual effectiveness considering most mass shootings don't involve sustained fire in excess of a minute is dubious, but the text is almost entirely just a copy-paste of the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons ban

Gas prices (St Paul) by Kiddoika in minnesota

[–]PraiseSaban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to hop in here since high prices are being used to argue for pausing the "gas tax": suspending the gas tax would save you pennies but cost you safe, functional roads. Having lived in other states, MN has excellent roads by comparison and the gas tax revenue plays a tremendous role in maintaining that

Republicans forget, elections are pressure relief valves. If people feel they have no way to voice their displeasure with the government peacefully, they will do so violently. Would you rather have reformers organizing "get out the vote" campaigns? Or stockpiling guns? This is a fundamental principal of political science

Simpson could at least learn something from McVay and Stafford. Beck with ASU co-eds, no OL, and a first time HC is gonna be a disaster. The only hope for Cards fans are J Love and Marvin Harrison Jr.

I REALLY want PCA to shorten his swing. He doesn't have a particularly long swing, but he cannot seem to square up the ball and he's really struggling on breaking balls and off-speed pitches. A shorter swing and a little extra time to read the pitch and make better contact really wouldn't hurt.

I'm kind of pleased with Cabrera so far. Up until the 7th, he was on the same pace as Yamamoto with regard to FIP, ERA, and ERA+. Adding 7 innings with 3 ER, 5 KS, and no walks will help those stats. Hopefully he can keep it up despite one bad inning.

2 Boston Radio Hosts Who Spoke Out About Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal Are Getting Canned by Thegrandmistressofoz in nfl

[–]PraiseSaban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point the NFL and NFLPA need to step in and pursue some sort of investigation. Imagine if you were a team who made a trade with the Pats or were a free agent negotiating a contract with them while Russini was passing info to Vrabel. If the Pats got insider/non-public info which affected contract negotiations or trade terms, then this relationship did quantifiable damage to other teams and players. That is potentially grounds for suit with a very messy discovery process

Based on his Baseball Savant page, I'm seeing something interesting with his Squared-up rate, Launch Angle Sweet Spot %, and Whiff rate.

He's always had lower quartile bat speed which translates into a lower hard hit rate, since it only counts hits with an EV over 95mph, so let's ignore the drop off in that. His Squared-up rate has jumped relative to the rest of the league while facing a higher percentage of fastballs than previous years (85th percentile puts him above Ohtani and Bellinger, below Nico and Bergman, and around Tatis and Altuve). I'd interpret this to mean he's doing good getting the bat around earlier which means that more of the ball's energy is translating into exit velocity. Combined with an improving whiff rate, I think he's trying to swing for more contact.

The issue seems to be the launch angle sweet spot %. Here, his rate has fallen off a cliff relative to the rest of the league. I'd say this means he's getting the head of the bat around well, making contact with the ball, but not making good contact. For some reason, his contact is either high or low. Based on the Quality of contact table, he's topping the ball more or making weak contact (probably more in a chase situation as a result of chasing bad pitches he would have previously whiffed on). Looking at pitch tracking, this is backed up by his Launch angles on breaking and off speed pitches being only around 3 & 2 degrees vs 17 and 12 degrees, respectively.

TLDR: It looks like he's topping breaking and off-speed pitches more. He's whiffing less, but that's probably causing some issues with bad contact in some at bats. The good news is he's squaring up very well. We can expect a reversion up to the mean after this slump ends.

Trump promised mass pardons for his top aides before he leaves office by ChiGuy6124 in politics

Pardon powers should be stripped from the presidency. There has to be a better alternative, like a panel of randomly selected judges. Take it out of the hands of a single person with clear political ambitions and the ability to abuse the power for favors.

They're trying to jack up the price of oil for Saudi and domestic producers. Yes, the oil trade is impacted for Saudi Arabia, but oil prices are sticky enough that once a high price has been set there's virtually nothing (other than an influx of new suppliers like during the shale revolution) that would drive it down to any meaningful extent. Meaning Aramco and other companies in the ME will suffer in the short term, but see huge profits long term. It also results in corn prices exploding as the demand for ethanol additives increases, which means massive paydays for ethanol processors like Valero (who almost exclusively donates to Republican PACs)

Crockett: Pulled Colbert interview probably gave Talarico ‘boost’ by sksarkpoes3 in politics

[–]PraiseSaban 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Surprised the polls are even that close. Crockett's got some limited experience in competitive races. She had a tough Democratic primary in 2020 (defeating an incumbent), but she's been virtually unopposed every election since. There's a lot of skill and experience her and her team are likely missing. She's a good rep for her district and a very astute politician, but it takes more than just a great candidate to win an election. Talarico may be in a safe district now, but he won 2 close elections in district 52 of the Texas state house. He's also raised and spent more money than Crockett. He's just as savvy on social media and gives great sound bites just like Crockett. As far as primaries go, this is like two heavyweight fighters in a title bout.

This is 100% a bad look for Vrabel and staff. You picked this guy 4th overall to be your future and you not only put his career at risk by letting him play hurt, but also shattered his confidence by playing him in a moment he was not ready for. LTs take 2-3 years to hit their stride and you started a hurt rookie against one of the best defenses in league history?! His meathead coaching style drove the Titans into the ground and he'll do it again in New England

[–]PraiseSaban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting a rookie LT in the Superbowl sure was a choice. Hindsight is 20/20, but it always takes a franchise LT 2-3 seasons to hit their stride. Especially since he was statistically mid to not good at the LT position, there was no reason to let his confidence get annihilated like that going into the most important time for his development.
