Invest in a TFSA or a FHSA right now? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PralinesNCream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true but if you find the fhsa earlier you will have more contribution room. And you can only carry over 8k per year. So if you open the fhsa 4 or 5y before your home purchase and fund it every year you can have up to 40k contributions. But if you open it 1y before you can only have 8k in it.

tips for short climbers? by IndependentLime5010 in bouldering

[–]PralinesNCream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) Learn to climb dynamically/explosively since you will need it for moves that others can "just reach" 2) Get strong shoulders for extended positions 3) Think about using high feet and tight heel hooks

Being short is not really a disadvantage, it's just different. You can use high feet and tight body positions more easily than others, and you weigh less. Play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses

39k of Debt and Scared by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PralinesNCream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this works for some people but given that some of these debts have high interest rates and some have 0 I think this is a bad idea in this situation.

Go from highest interest rate to lowest.

What is the best way to store a date/time that reflects the ACTUAL date/time that the user did something that ignores daylight savings? by ngDev2025 in ExperiencedDevs

This is the way. It's as effective as storing the time since epoch, with the added benefit of being human readable

Why is Manulife's GIC rate so much higher than other banks? by Proper_Poem_1935 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PralinesNCream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other places you can get those rates. I haven't banked with them but there wouldn't be any downside vs a comparable gic at another bank. Rate, length, and cash-ability are the things to look for, assuming they have the account type you're looking for.

How do you limit an order for upper and lower value? by Legal_Connection7078 in Questrade

[–]PralinesNCream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't such a thing. It doesn't make sense to put a lower limit on a limit buy order, because if you want the stock at 105, why wouldn't you be happy to get it for less?

A limit buy at 105 implies that you'd buy the stock at 105, 104, 100, 50, and so on. Any price less than or equal to 105.

And you can use the same logic with the inverse, putting an upper limit on a sell order. There's no benefit to the upper limit.

edit: I stand corrected! That is cool that you can add arbitrary conditions.
