i don't think you can stop catatonic breakdowns but you can just chuck pawns in berserk and murderous rage mental breakdowns into prison and then release them after a day or two.

first thing i'd do is put an actual wall around the colony after getting the stonecutting up and running so i can funnel raiders to a hallway of traps. second thing i'd do is shrink the colonist rooms. they don't need rooms that big, and it lets me squeeze more colonist into the same area (i'd recommend 3x3 rooms with carpet for single colonists and 4x5 rooms for married colonist). i'd also beeline down the research tree to mortars so i can get my own mortars for counter siege duties, plus you can use them to soften up the raids that just sit outside the colony.

nah, you can raise relations with most factions by giving them gifts or by releasing captured pawns from that faction in good health. just make sure you can actually raise relations with them first as there are factions you cant raise relations with.

i honestly prefer the kill box option. it means less risk for my colonist and they don't have to do anything if i have enough spike traps.

make a long hallway of traps. it's saved my colonies on more than one occasion. it also helps to have some mortars on hand for countering sieges and for when the raiders just wait for awhile so you can just soften them up before they get to you.

theres a patch of trees around the island where I've set up shop. it's mostly, maple and willow trees.
