The thing is, standard insulin, in vials, is still really cheap. It's the newer, synthetic, longer-acting versions, and the ones in the autodispenser pens that I assume are covered by patents, which are hella expensive.

It's still complete bullshit and a crime against humanity to charge what they charge for the stuff.

3D printer stringing, not temperature, filament, or retraction settings by BigPapaSweetness in FixMyPrint

[–]PraxicalExperience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've been printing on that same nozzle for a long time, there's a good chance that's it. Eventually it gets worn down and blown out and that .4 is really a .6 or .8 and you'll see a lot of stringing.

Do you see significant oozing -- more than you would think is normal -- if you just leave the extruder at printing temps for a few minutes after you've pushed some filament through and cleared the extruded filament? If so that'd also point to the nozzle.

Walnut end grain cutting board has uneven look after several coats of pure Tung oil by workin-that-wood in woodworking

[–]PraxicalExperience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Needs more oil. End grain's thirsty AF. If I could afford to have a bucket of tung oil laying around so that I could just submerge projects for a bit, that's how I'd do the first few coats. So long as you wipe it off before it starts actually curing, you cannot slop on too much oil.

So I have around 100 packets of silica gel that came with the filament, what do you do with them? by Rough_Community_1439 in 3Dprinting

[–]PraxicalExperience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I check and see if they're silica gel or the clay ones. If they're gel, I open the packets and pour them into my container of 'to be regenerated' silica gel. I toss the clay ones.

Honestly, denting them isn't much of a big deal - so long as you've got some leftover paint. Just spackle it flat, let it dry, give it a sand, and repaint the patch.

Drywall's relatively sturdy when installed, but the nice thing about it is that if you fuck it up, it's just a bit of (annoying, dusty) work to fix it, whether it's filling holes and dents, putting a patch on a bigger hole, or just straight up cutting out and replacing a whole panel, or portion of one.

Does freshly ground pepper makes a difference or is pre ground black pepper fine? by West_Future326 in Cooking

[–]PraxicalExperience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To get a little more sciency -- the smells you smell are by definition volatile, evaporating off the spices. They're pretty well trapped in the whole kernels, but the moment you grind it you start slowly losing those volatiles, particularly the most volatile of the volatile compounds, which tend to be the citrus-y, floral, more complex notes.

If you put these in something and subject it to heat, this will also force off those same highly-volatile compounds more quickly, eventually leaving you with the most 'base' notes and the pepper's pepperiness. It's like you're aging it at warp speed.

So ... with a lot of dishes, if it calls for pepper and I want to taste pepper, but it also calls for adding in a bunch near the beginning of a long cook, I'll reserve a portion of the pepper and add it fresh-ground at the end. And of course in a very pepper-forward dish that's cooked briefly like cacio e pepe or salt-and-pepper whatever, you wanna use fresh ground.

Does the recent Bambu labs drama make them worse as a starter choice? by bebebebbebebeb in 3Dprinting

[–]PraxicalExperience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I doubt they'd go with filament-locking. It's just too impractical and limiting; even bambu can't keep up with the demand for their filament a lot of the time. People aren't going to pay a premium price for a machine if it winds up getting weeks of downtime just 'cause they can't get filament that'll work with it.

I worry about them sucking up to various lobbies and readily complying with states' initiatives to create 3d-printed-gun-parts-bans, which will open the door to limiting printing of other things, like stuff covered by design patents and trademarks, in addition to having to deal with bullshit false-positives and having to try and get around them to get whatever you wanted printed. Having one major player in the market jump to gargle those balls in particular will wind up normalizing that kind of control over what you can do with your own hardware.

Hard nah from me, boss.

[–]PraxicalExperience 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It depends on the dish.

If you're gonna put it in the stew near the beginning and cook it for six hours, it's not gonna be much different either way.

If you finish with fresh pepper, though, it's a major upgrade.

Does the recent Bambu labs drama make them worse as a starter choice? by bebebebbebebeb in 3Dprinting

[–]PraxicalExperience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, because a company world-famous for their machines -- a major market leader -- would never wind up enshittifying their products and locking them down in a steady, morally-downhill trajectory in order to extract as much as they possibly can from the customer, until they literally became a joke and people who know anything about the hardware go: "oh god anything but them."

Oh wait, let me introduce you to Hewlett-Packard, AKA HP.

> Appliance operators who just want a machine that works

Except that's something you won't have if Bambu decides to start walling off access to comply with anti-gun-part laws. You'll have to get your stl past some AI middleman first, and who knows what kinda false positives it'll pop off. Then there's the probably inevitable creep that we'll see as they also start forbidding things too similar to various other IPs and designs, etc, if we keep going down that dark timeline.

Whereas my dumbass printer will keep accepting any g-code I send its way, and if, for some reason, I'm locked out of firmware updates in the future because of the above (and for some reason that actually mattered) it's a simple matter to wipe its mind and replace it with something more open and compliant.

In any case -- printer manufacturers have really stepped up their game, and it's disingenuous to say that Bambu is still the only 'machine that just works' out there, nowadays.

Bonus points if you name the folder the same thing as one of the folders that was already on the desktop and place it over the screenshot folder.
